Bid With Me at a Country Auction! | My $200 Haul & Tips for Beginners

  • People always ask where I get my antiques and vintage for resale, so we thought we’d share the experience of bidding at auction! This small town Kentucky auction house in Dawson Springs is a regular haunt for me when I travel the Upper South and Midwest.
We let the cameras roll a bit to show the unvarnished experience, then my bidding begins. I’ll talk about the antique and vintage items I see, give some tips for beginning bidders and do a “haul video” of my selections as I win them! Since this video is about resale shopping at an auction, I talk more extensively about what I spend and what I later got for some of the items I’m buying and reselling.
I comb the auction for deals, ending up with everything from Hall’s Jewel Tea dinnerware to a Chevy Bel-Air clock. Crocks and churns come my way, and a vivid Viking Glass piece shows why it pays to buy stuff from places it doesn’t belong. In all, I spend $200 in hopes of selling the items for over $500!
Why did two identical items sell for different prices? Is that a good price on a wicker table? Why would I pay $45 for a pocket knife? As I bid, I try to inform, explaining what I see in the marketplace that makes me take one item over the next (and why I’m passing up great reselling opportunities on some larger and newer items).
Avon Cape Cod, 1930s car taillights, a scarce Chris-Craft boat emblem in a box lot and other goodies come our way. You’ll also get to see the things I don’t end up buying, including a good Boston crock jug! A list of other highlights follows below…
I hope my review of bidding at a country auction helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, inspires your own estate sale digging and educates you about how I pick for reselling! I’m happy to be sharing my real world vintage encounters with the online community, I love sharing our passion and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.
Here’s some more of what we see cross the auction desk:
Horse collar mirror, Christmas decor, Star Wars record boxes, miniature jugs, crocks by Louisville Stoneware and Monmouth, Autumn Leaf Aladdin teapot, metal churn, Case knives, old paint butcher block, American oak hall tree, Wagner and Lodge cast iron cookware, 1910s lamp table, old meal grinder, 30 gallon crock, tools, motorcycle plate, soda bottles, spurs, primitive pounder, quilt tops, three-wheeled bike, 1950s dolls, souvenir pillow cases, etc.

My husband is Swedish and I'm southern Ohioan- right on the river by eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, so I have somewhat of a dialect with all the old Appalachian phrases and idioms sprinkled in. Within a year of us starting to date he sounded nearly indistinguishable from my local dialect because we talked to each other so much. Several years later and I have yet to ever be mistaken for having a Swedish accent. 😅

Still catching up on older vids. One thing I'd like to add is - before bidding on piece for your collection, make sure you inspect it carefully. I'm not saying it happens often but there are people who will dump their repros into an auction and once you buy it, it's impossible to return it once you find out it's not the real deal.

I went to a estate auction of a auctioneer and his entire auction house over three auctions, somewhat reminds me of this, spent around $2500 all said and done, had some crazy rare stuff hiding all over the place, there they let you pick items at the end of the auction to put up that they never got to, I must have put up over 40 items/lots myself that were not , lowest bid was $5 plus 20% buyers premium so I picked better stuff. I went before the auction three plus hours ahead and brought a notepad and pen, wrote down every thing I could inspect to look up, and wrote down what I would pay maximum for each item/lot as some sold in lots. Doing this saved me some money, and when people tried to raise it too much I just stop bidding instantly on things making it so others stopped outbidding me just to do so, worried they would get stuck with things, so stuff got extra cheap at times for me.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad

Good idea! Tonight's video is a pre-auction preview as well as showing my adopted hometown so you can get an idea of what I think things are worth that will sell soon

Your English is fine! The auctioneer will let anyone bring as long as it's old, it's theirs to sell and he can sell it for whatever he can

What was the object that looked like a big orange tabby cat? The head looked unusual if it was a cat.

Hmm, I missed that somehow. Can you tell me the time stamp?

The Antique Nomad You can easily see it at 23:21. It's sitting off to the right, between the boy in the purple shirt & the woman with blond hair & is right beside the large crock that gets sold at 26:44. Never get to see the orange cat statue (?) sold, it's there for a long time then is just gone, so I assume you didn't film that sale, but I was curious as to what it was.
