Intel i7-7700K Revisit: Benchmark vs. 9700K, 2700, 9900K, & More

  • We're revisiting the Intel i7-7700K, which feels a whole lot older than it is given the pace of Intel's product launches. This benchmark comes in at the end of 2018 to compare against the 9700K, 8700K, et al.

Find the i7-8700K on Amazon: geni.us/uiHw
or the 9700K on Amazon: geni.us/SAKL
    and the R7 2700X on Amazon: geni.us/NtpF
The Intel i7-7700K got the short straw when Intel was drawing for products, launching in January of 2017 and being superseded just 9 months later by the objectively and notably superior i7-8700K. The 7700K was still a strong overclocker, so we wanted to revisit this CPU with a 5.1 and 5.0GHz OC applied (depending on test) to see how it benchmarks versus the i7-8700K, 9700K, 9900K, R7 2700, and more.

intel made the 9900k an i9 and increased the price to offset the larger size. and then you have to make the i7 an 8 core 8 thread part. but i think they should have just dropped the igpu. then the 9900k would actually be a bit smaller than the 8700k. then sell the 9900k as an i7. but then you cant bin from xeon w stock and all that. intel really need to move the igpu off die and make the new i7 an 8 core with 16 threads at least and just sell a version with an igpu. or better yet a 10 core with no igpu but i bet that will be the new i9. if intel went i7 10 core with no igpu and charged current i7 prices (and i think they could) that would steal the show in my mind

Try tuning your voltage. My mobo's 'auto' setting was running my 7700k ~10C hotter than it needed to be completely stable at stock clocks. It decided 1.32v or something was good where 1.25 has was perfect since I noticed. I now run a conservative 4.8Ghz OC at the voltages my mobo was using for base clocks.

As a 7700k owner I have no regrets, it's about your personal circumstances, when you want to build a PC and I think the most important item should be the GPU, the pricing, availability and use case. I bought a 7700k and a 1080ti and run at 1440p UW, so I feel the CPU gains of the 8700k or 9900k for me personally, give me little buyers remorse because I prefer image quality and FPS above 60 but I'm not interested above 120 FPS. Still love the look back Steve as it has functionally been 2 years since the 7700k launched.

Lets hope next year we get even better CPU's from both AMD and Intel. It might be the year to upgrade finally. Cuz now the distance between 7700/8700 is not that huge and the 9900 is too expensive. Never buy tech that costs an arm, because it will just cost much less a year down the road. Which brings us to 2019 or 20. I cant freaking wait.

    • @faffabout9412
      @faffabout9412 5 ปีที่แล้ว

That's not framerate bottlenecking, that's overtaxing your CPU, any CPU can be overtaxed, IE... if you play 8 player unlimited units on supreme commander, you can put so many AI on the field it would lock up even a 7980XE, that's a different process, the AI runs logic against your processor for every single NPC on the field, overloading the logical processors (smt) on your CPU. Framerate bottlenecks happen when your GPU request frame information from your CPU and the time your CPU take to deliver the frame is much slower than the GPU time to render the frame.

Sure there is something to be said for the "it just works" mentality of the Intel setup, but if I can SAVE MONEY, get TWICE the core count and not sacrifice gaming performance then i'm all over that shit because gaming isn't the only thing I do with my computers, being able to complete CPU based rendering in a fraction the time is a big deal for my work.

Hypethreading joined the gameplay so BF1 and few other games started using all 8, now with cheap 6/12 or 8/16 AMD CPUs they should start designing games that will eat all the 16, it will happen at some point for sure, but the thing is if it's worth the wait.
But then avoiding high core count CPUs will only slow the process down.

There are pros and cons to both. It's hard to discern the difference between a 10ms and a 12ms median frame time (they're both just squiggly lines on top of each other), even though it's as significant as 20%!
A typical average-1%-.1% set of statistics offer more intuitive and actionable information (the average is 10 over my display refresh rate, and at worst it doesn't dip below 60). Of course there's the problem of misleading presentation of facts which is where frame time comes in.

The AVG FPS is still a good measure for RAW performance, while the frame plot show you delays. In network terminology one would speak about bandwidth and latency..
The plot contains 5000 frames. If you would plot RX580 vs a RTX2080TI, both would be very similar. What the plot doesn't show you, is how LONG it took to fill the plot. You can be looking for a 41 second 120 AVG for a RX580, while the 3000 frames would be rendered with the RTX2080TI in 19 seconds with 260FPS.. To make the graphs more comparable GN used the RTX2080TI to remove as many factors as possible..

I built my 7700k sytem in feb 2017 knowing amd had something coming and I had the money at the time and a decent video card *1070* The games I play I do not find a performance issue in at 1080p. I run most games 60-140 fps on ultra settings.. personally I'm only noticing issues in online games like battlefield 1.. single player 144fps is a normal thing online 120 fps and cpu stuttering is more the norm. So if I was remotely interested in bf1 online or cod or something I'd have to update but playing hitman and games like that.. it's a waste of money to update. And like Steve-o said 3-5 years I was thinking 3 or 8/16 cpu's fine but a 9900k is to expensive for not enough of a gain. Not another 1000 bucks worth anyways.

GN great video thank you. I am on a i7 2600K@5.1GHz and just installed a EVGA 280mm CLC water cooler that I got for Christmas this year. My temps were good before the upgrade but after installing the EVGA CLC 280mm I seen about a 20c-22c drop under full load stress test even more so in just standard gaming.
It impressed me so much I retried for the magic 5.2GHz and yes it ran and was able to do bench tests fine with the new cooler I noticed that 2 out of the 10 games I tried on it @5.2GHz crashed back to desktop after about 15-20 minutes of gaming in those 2 games everything else ran fine and the temps were well under control. I figure it was either looking for maybe a slight voltage bump or maybe my mainboard VRM was starting to get to warm. Either way I never really notice much of any FPS increase @5.2GHz mainly because my R9 390x is most likely holding back any performance gain I would be getting form the extra 100MHz on the 4 cores.
I am sure it was my graphics card holding the system back because the GPU was stuck at 100% usage and and the core @1236MHz pretty much always with my settings. The games were all smooth though like they always are so I am not complaining. I do plan on retiring my i7 2600K summer of 2019 and getting maybe a AMD Ryzen 3000 CPU whether it is a 8,10,12 core is undecided since we do not know what AMD has planned for the main stream just yet. If we are to believe the rumors amd leaks we will be getting at least a 10/20 Ryzen and some say a 12/24 Ryzen I do not think that will happen but if it does that will be my next CPU. I also plan on getting a Navi GPU setp if the rumors hold true then at least 1080/2070 performance for around $300-$350US which is pretty good and both of these AMD parts will be huge upgrades for my system.
The only thing I will miss is having to go down to 16GB memory since right now I have 32GB but it is DDR3 of coarse. Maybe ram prices will drop enough so I can just pick up 2 16GB sticks of DDR4 3600MHz and be able to keep my 32GB installed memory.
For GN's charts to gauge where my CPU sits for performance so I can compare I just took their i7 2600K@4.7GHz and added a few percentage of performance to that CPU's scores to see where I sit in GN's charts CPU performance wise that is. I was surprised that my old trusty 2600K at it's clock rate sits just above a 7700K stock most of the time except in one of the games my CPU fell a bit short I do not remember which game but I think it was the new Assassins creed game. Either that game uses the newer AVX instructions in the 7700K or likes more memory bandwidth that DDR4 provides.

My gaming rig is still rocking a delidded and liquid metal'd 7700k @ 5ghz stable-as-a-stone and an AIO/360mm rad cooled 1080ti overclocked by about 250mhz on the gpu and 450mhz on the ram, which never goes above 55c under the heaviest loads I can throw at it and rarely goes above 40c when playing anything that's not loading it to capacity.
I game at 1440 or 2160, depending on the game and how well it'll do at 4k or if it runs better at 1440, and I have absolutely no complaints.
I've got my ps4 pro and my gaming rig hooked up to the same Samsung KS8500 4k hdr TV and 60hz is still the refresh rate I game at. Far Cry 5 @4k doesn't stay at a perfect 60fps with everything cranked up, so I knocked a couple of settings down just a smidge, I can't tell the difference and it stays pinned at 60fps forever.
Tom Clancy's Wildlands feels better for me to play at 1440p with everything absolutely cranked than at 4k with a few modest setting compromises, so that's how I play that one.
Final Fantasy XV, I have very specifically tweaked settings for to play @ 4k60fps, as that game knocked down to 1440 on my display looks unusually bad. Its a resolution thing, not the game's fault, but there it remains and my fine tuned settings worked a charm for me when I was still playing that one.
Resident Evil 7 played @ 4k60ps with everything cranked and HDR on like a champ, and that was even before I'd thrown an AIO on my gpu and it was still running MSI's stock clocks for the Gaming X 1080ti.
Good ol' Witcher 3 stays pinned at 4k60fps even with hairworks on, and even with the various mods enhancing the lighting and textures it still doesn't tend to budge from 60fps.
Everything else I play, my rig is still complete overkill for. Tales of Berseria, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Vesperia, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin 2, frequent revisits to heavily modded installs of Fallout 4 or Skyrim.
I also play SWTOR and LotrO with my wife, and...well, those could run on a potato, relatively speaking. My wife's desktop is still rocking an old 2600k OC'd to 4.8ghz and a dramatically OC'd 980ti, both AIO cooled, and she can't be bothered to care to even think about upgrading yet as her display is 1440p 75hz weird chinese monitor that's actually stunningly good for the price she paid for it, and she doesn't give a crap about having all settings cranked in most games anyway.
Even the old 2600k and the still-potent 980ti she's rocking play everything I listed above at performance levels I'd find acceptable.

run OC everyday 4.9 1.3v on a kraken x62 with some nice breezy 60 degree temps, functionally indistinguishable from 5.0ghz, got a huge improvement in 1% lows last week just from upgrading 2133 ram to 3200. i’m happy until ice lake

I had a Dell optiplex 990 i7-2600, sold that got an i7-4770k, sold that and got a i7-7700k. Just a month ago and I was playing games with an i7-2600(no k) now I'm on the i7-7700k and it's freaking amazing.

I got a very nice Z270 motherboard for free right before the 8700K launched and have been very happy with my 7700K. I was curious to see how it stacked up against 9900K though. Thanks for the review and revisit GN!

The 8th gen chips were already available when I bought my 7700k based system, but I decided to go with this because I wanted a 4+GHz part more than I wanted a 6 core/12 thread part having looked at all the benchmarks for modern games and seeing that very few were utilizing more than 2~8 threads to any great extent. Paired with my GTX 1060 at 1080p, I'm still quite content with this system as-is and after recently cleaning and re-pasting the CPU and GPU with a fresh application of Kryonaut, I'm now able to run my 7700k at a constant 4.5GHz without any thermal throttling and my GTX 1060 clocks up to around 1.8GHz~1.9GHz+ especially on a day that isn't too hot and humid. Not half bad for a laptop. I'm sure I could squeeze higher clocks out of it if I tried to bump the voltages up, but running with XMP at 3002MHz CL16 and an all core locked turbo value of 4.5GHz for the CPU, it's still the fastest system I've ever used and I'd rather keep it running happily at safe temps and voltages than try to squeeze out the last possible ounce of performance for it. I don't do anything besides game and browse the web etc. (no video production, image editing or anything like that) so I have no reason to upgrade at this time. I suspect that once the next gen consoles drop, AMD is going to shift the gaming space towards 8 cores/16 threads, so that might be the time to consider an upgrade, but since that's not likely to occur until 2020 or later, I should be just fine until then with my current system, especially since I'm not much for most modern titles anyway (I like fighting games and the occasional twitch based FPS like Quake/Unreal etc.) so there is no current/upcoming title on the market that calls for any more horsepower than I already have, especially at 1080p with a 60Hz G-SYNC display. 2020 also happens to be when Windows 7 support ends, and since I loathe Windows 10, I'll have to decide then what to do and whether to risk sticking with the dated OS or move on to something else, assuming there is an option (besides Linux) that doesn't suck so much.
Anyway, thanks for the benchmarks. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially as the core counts have been going up with each major launch from AMD and Intel lately, though I still suspect that at least until the next gen consoles come, most games still won't utilize more than 8 threads and will still lean more on higher clock speeds; something the 7700k has an advantage over many newer parts from both vendors (save for the extreme editions), at least at stock speeds being a 4.2GHz base clock part. I've also been wondering just how much of a difference there is between 4 cores with HT/SMT vs a true 8 core part, so seeing the comparisons with the 9700k gave me a good feel for the differences (IPC changes notwithstanding of course).
