I had a great uncle who was in the Coast Guard at Galveston at this time, watching for subs, reporting sightings. My Grandfather was a brick layer and form builder at Santa Fe, TX for the blimp base.
I wasn't aware of my fathers time at sea until after he died. i found cassette recordings that he made prior to his death. this recording is one in which he talks about how terrifying it was to be on a tanker leaving Port Arthur and being hunted by the German submarines. I asked my mom about it and she explained that my dad lost his mind after too many bad experiences at sea particularly the loss of friends on ships that were sunk by the Submarines. it was then that i began to understand his drunkenness and angry behavior. my family has served the USA at sea for 4 generations , my horror at sea wasnt from the Germans but by another US Navy ship I didn't know how to make the audio recording available so i made it as a youtube video. the first part is an introduction then his recording. th-cam.com/video/yHb-MWhXp78/w-d-xo.html
It's forgotten by most people, but there was at least a couple instances of German U-boats on the surface shelling Galveston to attempt to destroy oil tanks onshore and having exchanges with USA shore batteries. No major damage was inflicted, but it happened. It was in the news at the time. My grandparents were young then and recalled it clearly.
My grand mother and great aunt would swear they could hear and see flashes out in the Gulf from Sabine Pass. I guess we will never know if it’s true but neither were known for lying or even exaggerating.
Nice video. However, in German, the U is pronounced ooh, and Boot is pronounced like boat. So, ooh boat and not you boot, though that rhymes. And Unterseeboot is pronounced "Uhnter-zay- boat".
I dig the phonetic spelling. Being an Oklahoman, German is virtually worthless to learn as my second language (vs Spanish ((or even mandarin, god forbid)) ) but damn it sounds so cool and I love the German TV show Das Boot. It’s kinda campy. And nothing like the 10/10 movie, but that beautiful chaotic German yelling sends a shiver down my American spine that must be DNA ingrained at this point. Love it.

Great video! Getting very artsy with some of the graphics and video . . . you've come a long way from your "let's walk the neighborhood" segments. 😀
I live in south east Louisiana and there was a blimp base and I’m pretty sure very few people know that it was actually for this
Right!? I had always head about the blimps in the area and no one ever told me growing up that it was for spotting enemy subs or vessels!

other wise great vid
All I can imagine is how good the trout fishing was back then.
Kind of ironic that the Germans were sinking oil tankers and ran out of fuel for themselves.

Except in The USA, we pronounce things how we want, just like Germans in Germany pronounce American things the way they want.
