  • Ed Dickens, Jr. - Sr. Manager, Heritage Operations, Union Pacific provided a presentation followed by question/answers on this new presentation that will go into technical details about 844 & BIG BOY 4014 firebox work & water treatment after 2011 at the 2024 Rocky Mountain Train Show.
Union Pacific’s steam locomotive fleet includes No. 844, a world-famous high-speed passenger locomotive, and No 4014, one of twenty-five of the famous “Big Boy” 4000 class - the largest steam locomotives in the world. Each year Union Pacific proudly sponsor a steam tour, inviting communities and rail fans to join them at whistle-stops and displays across their 23-state network to celebrate Union Pacific’s rich heritage and learn about modern rail operations.

I remember when 4014 overnighted in College Station. That night, Ed took 20 minutes to talk to me and my then-6-year-old boy and entertain his endless questions and our enthusiasm.
Lots of respect for him and for the whole team.

Love listening to Ed. He is beyond a wealth of knowledge when it comes to steam locomotives. Great presentation.

What an opportunity to capture this walking encyclopedia of experience in this domain, and share with us. Thank you ! My question: who is being groomed to supplement, and then take over when Ed needs to go to greener pastures.

Tremendous presentation always interested in hearing Ed explain the process of rebuilding these historic monsters. Too bad folks had to keep walking around during his presentation. Thanks for sharing your unique knowledge with us. Wonderful job.

I am currently an undergrad studying mechanical engineering, and I got to say, there is a lot of fascinating talk around just basic chemistry that makes me super excited (beyond just the talks of typical boiler design). I believe that most people don't consider simple things like water purification, especially for such a large locomotive, and to develop mobile water filtration is such a huge step in steam locomotive preservation.

Funny enough undergrad here as well who's studying a bit of basic Chemistry and listening to this video was very fascinating for me as well. Finally makes that information feel useful and well worth the stretch to learn!

Makes me wonder how much the old shop engineers would say “that’s so frickin’ wrong, you’re making it way harder than it needs to be” or “wow, that’s such a great way to do it! I wish we had this tech/these equations!”

I would imagine of Ed can be our teach of locomotive operations and railroading.

Ed's sure right re Steamer M & R. It's hard to believe they could turn a profit back in the day. M & R as extensive as a military aircraft now.

You will be surprised to know that nuclear submarines operate on saturated steam, no superheat. Consequently pressures are not crazy high. Reliability is all important.

This is kinda talkin me outta restoring my own steam locomotive.. there's a LOT that goes into this stuff, but it's TRULY worth it.

Oil firing is very hard on the sheets of a locomotive Durango and silverton will have a lot of work to do now on theirs sad that they are not coal firing due to the green nuts .

Doubt us environmentalists are the cause - I'm one and couldn't give a shit about coal locos (such a small impact vs the historical value). The cause for the switch is fires. Coal burning locos start fires too easily in such a dry, fuel rich region of the country. And that will shut down a railroad mighty quick
