    A live, semi-improvised jam, performed entirely on hardware.
    Whenever I go through a bout of heavy songwriting, I seem to turn to the NDLR to cleanse my palate; the NDLR is simple but always leads to results I'm really pleased with. This time, I let my Patreon supporters choose the synths I'd use, and I filled in the (limited) remaining space with some Eurorack effects for added texture and space. Of the four that my supporters chose, the Deckard's seemed the best choice for pads, and the Perfourmer for bass/drone. That left the Typhon and Polybrute for motifs, which I think turned out to be the right call. While each device is analog in its sound generation, each one brought its own unique strengths to its job.
    I sat down to try to find the song with my supporters on a livestream, played the song through once, and already knew what it would look like. Such is the power of the NDLR!
    Conductive Labs The NDLR - sequencing for four devices (drone, pad, motif 1, motif 2)
    Black Corporation Deckard's Dream into Noise Engineering Elector Versio into Qu-Bit Data Bender - pad with reverb and glitch
    Vermona Perfourmer into Strymon Magneto into Mutable Instruments Beads - drone/bass with tape delay, reverb, and glitch
    Dreadbox Typhon - motif
    Arturia Polybrute - motif
    Performed and recorded live, and with compression, EQ, and limiting on the master.

    Very Ethereal stuff here. That's a lot of gear, but it still sounds much larger. It's always very cool to see these somewhat disconnected jams rather than very polished tracks. Both have their place of course, but there's just something special about having the gear in front of you and performing a track like this. Solid stuff!

    I love your jams. Always interesting.
    I am a bit curious about the NDLR. Is there any way of saving the midi from the NDLR when doing an improvised jam? I mean to capture ideas for further tweaking?
    I am looking to build a DAW-less rig and is considering having the NDLR as one of the brains (the other will likely be a groove box like Blackbox, Deluge or Circuit Tracks).

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motifs and pad/drone parameters can be saved, and then the MIDI can be recalled whenever you play the respective chord. I've never captured MIDI from the NDLR so I'm not sure if it can be done. And thanks!

    On the NDLR, is it possible to automate a chord progression instead of manually changing it as you do here? I am using a breath controller in my setup as an improvised solo voice, and I’d like to be able to take my hands off the chord sequence at times but still have motion.

    • @JayHosking

      I wrote an Voltage Modular interface for every controll in the NDLR, using CV to MIDI CC to controll the chord selection. Runs fun, as its possible to use generative CV modules to drive the chords and rhythms of the NDLR.
      LOVE my NDRL!

    • @flaminggarlic
      @flaminggarlic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there is a chord sequencer, but you can also change chord degree and type via MIDI notes, so it's even easier to just sequence one channel of MIDI from another device to control the NDLR chord changes you want. Something like beatstep pro would be great for this, or even an iPad.
