The greatest solution I've seen and then started using both as a player and rewarding as a DM. Roleplay talking about it! The idea that 3-5 people go on daring adventures together and don't chat about the rumors or knowledge that they've heard is crazy. Roleplay talking about the creatures you've faced. Nothing wrong with a campfire chat at night discussing those creepy "squid head" things the barbarian heard about... try it out!
