Including me! I went to a concert when i was 16 and embarrassing yelled out at the top of my voice "I love you Michael" right before he sung friends and it was dead quiet and he waved to me! lol! I'm 47 now and still love his music! The older stuff more than the worshippy style stuff!
I was 20 when this came out... to hear it again put the good chills in my body.. such an awesome talent... Thank God for him. Now he leads millions into worship and Gods presence. The maturity of his true purpose.
It's just a play on words. He's quoting a line from an 1851 editorial from the Terre Haute Express: "Go west, young man, and grow up with the country." It was encouraging young strong men to venture into the untamed American west of the 19th century. I don't listen to much Christian rock, but I like Michael W. Smith a lot. He's just a really good writer. And the fact that he writes spiritual lyrics is icing on the cake.
This was my favorite song growing up. I grew up in Nevada, I remember asking my mom, "Aren't I already in the west? and is this only a man?" I was 10 or somewhere around that age lol. Anyway, when I realized the full meaning of this song, I loved it. He was and is still my favorite singer. Sam
I saw him in Wilmore Kentucky at a huge retreat. I can.t remember the name of the festival anymore. We took 25 kids. They had a blast, but I think I had just as much fun. Other great Christian Bands. I have not thought about that sadly in a long time.
There is a Biblical phrase: "As far as the east is from the west, he has removed our sins from us". There is also a famous phrase in American history, "Go west, young man, and grow up with the country". It's merely poetic license that enables Michael W. Smith to say "Evil go east" in this song.
this video was taped may 2, 1993. i know this because i had this video and michael came to chapel hill, nc the night before this was taped. (i hail from nearby durham) four days after i turned 17. that was a great show. now on october 19th, he's coming back, this time at the state fair. and i'm going to be there too!
i think some of this at the start was shot in chapel hill, nc at the dean smith center (was this someone's idea of a practical joke?) the night before this concert was taped and i was there. maybe i should look closely to see if i can find myself in the background. for some reason, the background looks familiar...
I certainly agree with the last poster - he is a very good-looking guy! Such charmisma! I don't like this song (too pop-sounding- but I guess that was typical for this time period - 1993). Glad to say he's retained his good-looks and appeal. The idol of the '80s and '90 christian bobby-soxers. Also a good family man - good morals and standards. God Bless Michael and his good work!
VEERY true. It wasnt untill 1995 when you could really hear a change in the sound of music. Like take drums for example. Drum sounds became less echoing in the late 90's and today. And synthes changed too.
It was popular opinion at that time to view the area now known as the (American) West as a vast wasteland that nobody in his right mind would want to live in. When Horace Greeley said "Go West, young man", he was thinking more of Illinois than Texas.
"We listen to Michael W. Smith tapes a million times"~lol (11-year-old kid at 00:14 in the clip). Wow. That really dates this vid:) Tapes? haha. um there's something called CDs lol.
While he probably based this on his own interpretation of scripture (and it's a good song), the phrase "Go West, young man!" was first used in the 19th century by American expansionists to justify "Manifest Destiny" - the idea that it was America's divine right to take control of the West.
Seriously? No offense but learn your scripture. This is song with this as it's basis: But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
Talk about mixed feeling. The faith aspect aside, geez do I feel old (27), was this music really popular or just a guilty pleasure like it is for me now? and on a positive note, it's these video clips that make my childhood in hindsight seem half as bad as I thought it was. There's something about the soundtrack to a person's life....
Evangelical kids in the 90s all look the same. I was one. We looked like zombies in a trance. Everything that the 90s was trying to destroy - all that 80s stuff that convinced people things would be perfect if we just gave all the money to the richest people, because of course, they know how to best spend that money. Relying on God for everything all the time is unhealthy for anyone. God's probably up there going, "Me again? You can't do this yourself? You really don't understand what this whole thing is about, do you?" We missed the boat big time.
I just got done with a job at an Evangelical org... the kids haven't changed at all haha. I felt so bad for most of them. Also reminded me of being a brainwashed teenager. Bad vibes all around. Nothing wrong with believing God or even being Christian. Evangelicals and fundamentalists are just too extreme and doing themselves and future generations a disservice.
Funny thing, I see now that biblically, Christians really *don't* have a place in this world. Our home is not here. I feel that all the more, as the world gets worse. Still love MWS's music, but see how much has changed, and our perspectives change too. Of course the Bible was right all along, even when times were simpler and easier.
I appreciate the music, but I have to admit, Christian artists have usually been behind secular artists in terms of current music. Sixpence and DC Talk are exceptions as being way ahead of their time. I still appreciate MWS's music, but it's not current for its time. Like most praise and worship music.
...totally ruined a great song for me. Ugh, goodness Im so sick of these hardcore over religious people coming on MWS, Amy Grant, Etc videos and posting long comments about Satan and evil etc. If I were you, I'd pay more attention to some secular artist and what THEY sing about. Leave these CCM artist alone, they sing for Christ. He makes all things new. "Go west" can have new meaning" And I can bet Michael was NOT thinking of "that". Again, thanks for ruining a great song and my childhood.
Hey! Don't let others ruin this song for you!!! It is a great song! Michael sings "Go West young man, when the evil go east! Definitely not about sodomy!
Catchy? What is this, pop music? Well anyway... I like some of Smitty's stuff, don't get me wrong. But I believe "christian" music is limited by the very virtue of it being christian. God gave us an entire world to sing about, and although sometime christians do, maybe we don't do it often enough. We feel the need to sing about Christ. Christ is good to sing about, but he did what he did, for us, so we could enjoy life here too, and sing about everything. Not limited to marital sex. Sex is good.
Hard to believe that many of those teenagers at the beginning are old enough to have teenagers themselves now; great memories.
And hopefully sharing his music with them too. The world needs the message in his music on His love now more than ever!
Including me!

This is one of my favorite songs EVER!!
Every one of these songs are made in a way that people want to hear. Michael makes it fun and you can see he's enjoying himself.

I saw him in Wilmore Kentucky at a huge retreat. I can.t remember the name of the festival anymore. We took 25 kids. They had a blast, but I think I had just as much fun. Other great Christian Bands. I have not thought about that sadly in a long time.

this video is dated 1993 to go with his ten year anniversary tour.
This guy rocks! :D
aWESOME
Va para o oeste jovem !!
Whoever dislikes this video doesn't know good music!
Jordan Moore not really just others prefer Mickey worshipping
@SunySher - "Cheesy early 90's" I heard that the 80s came to Canada in the 90s, so the date of this video is unknown unless the author clarifies.
@NameCallingIsWeak The video came out in 1993. 1993 was a split between the 80s and 90s.

nice song =)
That is indeed Tony Palacios from Guardian. Probably after Miracle Mile Tour.
VEERY true. It wasnt untill 1995 when you could really hear a change in the sound of music. Like take drums for example. Drum sounds became less echoing in the late 90's and today. And synthes changed too.
mrm64 Most important a shift towards Worship anointed music even Michael went back to his roots.
i think it's tony palacios at guitar... is it right?
it is obvious that the meaning of the song is just to run the opposite way from the evil..
not anything that has to do with literal things..
@SJCDPWorship isn't he Tony Palacios?
asta e smith ..... mama ce tanar era :))..... imi place cantecu mult:) ai idee cati ani avea aici smith ?
Was the guy in the white shirt Michael sweet.
I think that Michael W Smith is the best way to smile while the Jesus segregates those that annoy me

my mom wanted to see him live in concert, But she died before...
May she fly high into the HEAVENS!!!
and how do you know this?
not a dry seat in the house with this guy- gets that lady christian blood pumping
im not a christian but i love michael w. smiths talent
Well, CDs were out as early as 1986, but from '86 to the mid-90s, they weren't as predominant as cassette tapes.
Yes, I had (still have) tapes.
@keithryan1025 wow i never no that
that a trip!!!!
oops, i thought had replied to someone else. i don't even remember who it was now
"We listen to Michael W. Smith tapes a million times"~lol (11-year-old kid at 00:14 in the clip).
Wow. That really dates this vid:) Tapes? haha.
um there's something called CDs lol.
Hahaha...sure he is...and so is the rest of the band. I guess the brass isn't playing either...when MWS is live...he is live.

Smitty at his best!
as well as anyone could have put it!
He's just amazing, and a great kisser as well!
12 years ago, wow

@heddey2000 A decade and a half will do that to your voice...and other things. Although - I actually think his voice sounds better now.

Referring to "Place in This World", that song lyrically I think dovetails pretty well with Steven Curtis Chapman's "More to This Life"
I think you are taking it too literally. Would it be better if he sang "go right young man"...and "let the evil go left"?
That one KID "I dont really listen to the WORDS" IS MISSING THE BOAT AND NEEDS TO WAKE UP!!
Haha I agree! lol
maybe it was a private school.
my music preferi
Picture perfecr
Actually, GO EAST!!! Back to Rome! Back to the Holy Father!!! Give me you hate, I welcome it.
I'm sorry but does anyone else feel like he is lip-synching?
anyone know he had a huge drug problem when he wrote alot of his songs some include lsd marijuana cocaine
Ha, is this where anti-flag got "go west" from?
Christian? I don't think so
