The Timbre Wolf can be circuit bent and it is awesome. Next time I can find one for 200 or less out the door I will pick it up and circuit bend it. I did one in the past and made it semi modular with 44 patch points.
i only have the pleasure of the one animal, the og. purchased out of intrigue in 2016 it had been in deep hibernation. all truths and past stone throwing aside. out of its den was awakened the rhythm wolf, only recently. i suspect the result of a powerful, uprising spring. and indeed it is pure unfettered joy. yes, some knobs have questionable purpose. still, pure joy. like a panelled clock radio that really knows the time. joy.
I've been an InMusic employee at that time and when they showed us these three little beauties we (me and nearly all other collegues with a professional audio backround) were just: "They can't be serious with this." - But they were. Poor Dan, I can just imagine how these concepts looked at their early stage before the beancounters started cutting corners ending in the devices that everybody knows.
I was so close to get a job at inMusic here in Germany. Fortunately some employee whispered me that I just grab my feet in my hands and run as fast as I can to get some other job.
i'm a noise musician (lol) and was sold a rhythm wolf for like 50 dollars back in the day. fond memories of cranking the howl knob and wondering why it didn't sound like shit in the way i was looking for.
I bought the Tom Cat and Timbre Wolf new from Guitar Center when they were blowing them out. The combination of price and my curiosity made it irresistible. This then forced me to explore them and I eventually fell in love with these quirky little beasts. Not long after I found a mint condition box and everything Rhythm Wolf. I’ve got a fair amount of other nice gear, but I still love the immediate fun and warm sonic landscapes these animals provide. They very quickly force you into creation of musical ideas rather than tedious sound design.
I've got the Akai Rhythm Wolf. Before anyone mocks me, It was given to me by someone who's husband had passed away. It had never been used. All he'd done is mod it with separate outputs for each sound, and a couple of other mods. Then he must have turned it on, and realised he'd wasted precious moments even bothering with it. That said, a bit of EQ and it's only borderline terrible.
I have had one since 2015 and love mine. It's weird, quirky, and different. Plus I like using the disco Tom's as a sub synth by removing the envelope and bring out the sustain.
The Toms on the Cat are worth the price on their own. You couldn't attempt to build them for the price. I paid $110 for mine brand new on clearance because they couldn't sell them.
The Timbre Wolf is the one that has the most "potential" I'd use it for heavy moody music and dark synthwave projects. The other two...well I'm surprised you got that good of sound out of them honestly. Once again proving your talent
That kick on the Wolf actually slams pretty hard... ... but that might be just my new headphones outperforming expectations. Awesome jam of an episode! Thank you for all the laughs!
You made me love the Tom Cat and I still love it. No amount of retconning and re-reviewing will take that away. Industrial kicks plus disco toms will be "in" someday...
I was at the Messe in 2014 when the Rhythm Wolf was first shown and it became quite clear it had no other purpose than p*ssing on Roland's parade as they were presenting the first Aira products there (the TR-8, TB-3, VT-3 and System-1). It was clearly unfinished, it didn't play any sound but a lot of people got really stoked for it because it was true analog while the Airas were digital which made a lot of people pretty unhappy back then. A lot of people really believed Akai therefore "won" the Messe even though their machine didn't make a single noise. Now, 10 years later, the Roland range is well loved and still going strong, while these Akais are mainly meme fodder. Fun times!
"...quite clear it had no other purpose than p*ssing on Roland's parade... ...Roland range is well loved..." I'm strongly reminded of a whole bunch of TH-cam road rage shorts. The message to Akai was clearly, "Don't brake-check the semi!" :D

I'm one of those weirdos that had to buy both drum machines due to their notoriety. I managed to score the Wolf for £70 which I am almost proud about. I actually got the Tom Cat first for £100 and immediately came up with a great jam using the pitcheddisco toms. I realise later that the notes are far from in tune, but I jammed it by ear and the results were pretty damn cool.
The DX7 episode ended on a cliffhanger - I was expecting a follow up demonstrating the impossibility of programming a patch from scratch that doesn't just end up sounding like a cheap organ.
The Timbre Wolf keybed was really pretty okay, if the voice had just been a little more stable I might have picked one up when the prices hit the low point. It would never get used without heavy effects, but that could have been okay. I liked the basic idea of the design, it could have been a very decent instrument if the implementation had matched the dream. We love Akai Dan,
Yes, one of the few analog synths you can safely and easily circuit bend. Gave mine over 40 patch points before a local guy bought it...gotta do another some time.
I modded my Timbre Wolf. Its easy to separate the dual pots for Release, so that allows you to have two release pots for the VCA and filter. I also added PW pot for the Square wave. Gives you way more expression.

Rhythm Wolf and Timbre Wolf honestly always seemed fine, especially for the prices. Tom Cat was obviously nonsense, but whatever. Actually totally DOES reminds me of the DrumBrute, perfectly fine but people gotta be cry babies about everything. Jokes aside, it is a pretty rational way of building a box for electronics : stamped and screen-printed sheet metal that is bent/folded in one direction. The wood closes up the sides and provides stability and as raised stands for the box. Add a bottom plate for access. This can be produced out of a small workshop with a few machines, or you can order a few dozen units from your local metal- and wood shops. They all sounded very phat with no post production in my opinion. I would love to have the lot! These are certainly classic machines. Great 3 in 1 show and tunes as always!
I'd very much like to see the edited out bits just after you say the vocoded names because you are clearly on the edge of full blown laughter after several of them 😂
Someone posted they cannot watch you because it's joke after joke. I'd say you're in top form and people just don't like the truth. Keep doing what you do, you've taught me a very important thing, buy gear you've never roasted before lol.
The memes and editing are great fun, but that wouldn’t be enough for me without Florian’s insights and music. For me that’s the appeal, his critique and putting this gear to the test
10 years from now these will be discovered and become the sound of a generation. They will resale for 9000 Soylent Chips to AI hipsters down at the human Rodeo where they sell rhinestones to get by.
Hey, thanks for sticking at that pronunciation of Timbre Wolf even when I was yelling at the screen. I finally got the joke in the name. What can I say? It's after 3 a.m. and my mind is not sharp. Another great video and very much appreciated.

The Timbrewolf is unironically one of the only pieces of gear I'm actually still interested in getting at this point in my life. Probably time for some serious introspection.
What I like to do is go on videos that are obsessing over how “lush” or “warm” some vintage gear sounds and then say how much better the Timbre Wolf is
You do not by any means "suck" at reviewing, _im Gegenteil_! But as one individual living in a small apartment with thin walls with a downstairs neighbor who has recently complained about, specifically, having to hear synth tutorial narrators, I am grateful that you have toned down/eliminated the "WELCOME TO..." intro. At this point, you no longer need an introduction. Thank you.

They all sounded very phat with no post production in my opinion. I would love to have the lot! These are certainly classic machines. Great 3 in 1 show and tunes as always!
Thank you so much!!!
The pew, the woop and the disco tom are all things i never want to see or hear ever again. The same can be said for phil Collins also.
Do you like Phil Collins?😂
@@AudioPilz not a massive fan of the phil, but I saw him in there. I saw him in there.
Wow! I forgot about these! Thanks for reminding us! 😆
Always a pleasure;)
"Luxury simulated wood veneer". Weren't they an 80s west coast artpop synth combo?
lol
I'd very much like to see the edited out bits just after you say the vocoded names because you are clearly on the edge of full blown laughter after several of them 😂
;)
This is not AKAI, this is InMusic’s doing. They took a good company and destroyed it. I fear, they may do the same to Moog😱
Moog is invincible (at least in the long run)
Someone posted they cannot watch you because it's joke after joke.
I mean that's what you do whilst being extremely informative and also ripping a part the gear with pros and cons and also making music with it.
I'd say you're in top form and people just don't like the truth.
Keep doing what you do, you've taught me a very important thing, buy gear you've never roasted before lol.
Thank you so much!!!
The memes and editing are great fun, but that wouldn’t be enough for me without Florian’s insights and music. For me that’s the appeal, his critique and putting this gear to the test
No you didn't 😂
Of course I did;)
@@AudioPilzNo, you didn't
Great work as always, and nice idea!
Poor Dan (thumbs up for being cool about it)
Thank you!!!
for the Mushroom Kingdom
😂😂😂
Harumph
He’s at it again! The man that can make any old shitty piece gear sound really dope.
Thank you so much!!!
10 years from now these will be discovered and become the sound of a generation. They will resale for 9000 Soylent Chips to AI hipsters down at the human Rodeo where they sell rhinestones to get by.
Sci Fi Stonks!!!
I can't wait for this one. The Timbrewolf was the only synth I've ever returned and I got it on sale for $150. Akai Dan for life.
❤️❤️❤️Dan❤️❤️❤️
The Rhythm Wolf sounds bad, really really, really bad. The Off switch is the best part of that trash gear.
Word!!!
Wow, that was impressive! You were able to make the Timbre Wolf sound almost as good as my Casio SK-1!
Thanks;)
Hey, thanks for sticking at that pronunciation of Timbre Wolf even when I was yelling at the screen. I finally got the joke in the name. What can I say? It's after 3 a.m. and my mind is not sharp. Another great video and very much appreciated.
Isn't that a French word?;)
We Love all our gear.... from casio to akai......we are so grateful to Uli for being the Ordinary Man's Visionary....but really ....its the Time YOU put in with Your Gear....that it reveals its True Potential. ❤
🤔🤔🤔
I am considering getting a timbre wolf as a drone synth, 4 dark drifting oscillators with individual panning could be epic.
Agreed!!!
The best memes on the internet. I cried laughing at 5:41
But for real, awesome channel. I particularly enjoy the earnest attempts at trying to pull off actual tunes with mediocre gear.
Thank you so much!!!
Love the thumbnail.
Thank you!!!
My poor Rhythm Wolf has made so many appearances on your channel.
It's a classic!!!
We need the QY10 episode!!!
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
tHANKS FOR THE GOOD REVEIWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Timbrewolf is unironically one of the only pieces of gear I'm actually still interested in getting at this point in my life. Probably time for some serious introspection.
You might wanna seek medical attention;)
I use the timbre wolf on my tracks for the bassline but don't tell nobody. 🤫
My lips are sealed
What I like to do is go on videos that are obsessing over how “lush” or “warm” some vintage gear sounds and then say how much better the Timbre Wolf is
😀😀😀
You do not by any means "suck" at reviewing, _im Gegenteil_! But as one individual living in a small apartment with thin walls with a downstairs neighbor who has recently complained about, specifically, having to hear synth tutorial narrators, I am grateful that you have toned down/eliminated the "WELCOME TO..." intro. At this point, you no longer need an introduction. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️
