Woodturning - Making an olive wood natural edge goblet !!

- This time i make a goblet that is just for decoration !! So we can decorate our house with unique turnings !!! i Hope you like it !!

That turned out great. I appreciated hearing your thoughts as you were working, especially how you adjusted to the flaws in the wood. The wood can tell us what it needs, if we're wise enough to listen [and you obviously are ;) ]

Μπράβο και πάλι Κώστα. Όντως είχες δύο δυσκολίες μέσα στη κούπα και στη βάση. Έχω δει ότι βάζουν μια κόλλα όχι εποξικη c glue νομίζω.Ωραίο ξύλο η ελια και η αμυγδαλια αλλά έχουν άγχος μέχρι να το τελειώσεις.
CA glue ! ειναι κυανοακρυλικη κολα κοινος ως λογκο ! το ξερω οτι βαζουν αλλα ειμαι λιγο ξεροκεφαλος και θελω να δουλευω μονο φυσικα υλικα ! καποια στηγμη θα ανεβασω βιντεο με την χρηση τους και με βαψιμο τον εργων αλλα δεν ειναι κατι που συνιθυζω και ετσι πρεπει να το βαλω στο προγραμμα χα χα α αχ χα !!! σε ευχαριστω πολυ για το σχολιο σου να σαι καλα αδελφε μου !!!

Συγνωμη τωρα καταλαβα τι με ρωτας λοιπον τι συμβενει με τον κομπο !! οταν πιγενουμε κοντρα στα νερα της ελιας ειναι παρα πολυ δυσκολο να την σκαψουμε ! επιδη εγω εσκαψα το μπολ κοντρα στα νερα το υπολιπο κοματι το εφτιαξα με τα νερα στο πλαι ! το εργαλειο τρωει κατα μηκος πολυ ομαλα ολο το ξυλο αλλα οταν φτανει σε κομπο εχει τα νερα κοντα και δημιουργιτε ενα μικρο σκαλοπατι γιατι ειναι πιο σκληρο το σημειο που ειναι ο κομπος !

The grain in the olive wood amazes me each time. Sadly its difficult to buy and expensive here. Think i should emigrate!

Thanks a lot my friend ! I love to go to the limits of wood ! The idea that I may break it make me feel alive!!
I run into cracks like that all of the time and I treat them with CA to stabilize the sides then use painter's tape (which will release cleanly) and system 3 epoxy and charcoal dust to fill......the charcoal fills up the void and gives the epoxy a grain like appearance but will polish to a high luster with your finer grits and oil finish.....I used to use ebony dust and CA but at $ 52 US for a 1" x 2" x 24" in length......sanding these down to dust was a sin.......Kingsford brand charcoal is $ 5 per 20Lb bag

The problem with greece is that is really hard to find really good .CA glue! We have bison and logo but I find out that they are not good foe wood turning!!! Thanks a lot for the tips brother !!

thats so cool u did this piece and that its made of olive wood!! i have a small log thats like 12"L x id guess and say 6"in diameter that i got from a subscriber last yr and i didnt want to turn it into just anything. i cut the ends yesterday and theres no cracks so i wanna attempt this one with it today. after o watch your video a few more times too..lol thanks for shari g this beautiful piece!

Impressive Turning Kostas and excellent camera & commentary. I like your comment about decorative pieces. Your use of a soft pad on the tail stock live centre is very innovative. Does that minimize vibration?

Olive wood is beautiful. What is wrong with leaving a knot in the base (unless it makes it too wide)? Nice work and I also appreciate the subtitles.
thanks a lot my friend !! the knot of olive is the reason of a lot of cracks !!! also are very harder than the normal wood !! so as you turn the wood some times the tools stack on the begin of the knot and if is a sescitive piece like that maybe you break it !! sorry for my english my friend !!!
I usually go very slowly and sharpen the tool frequently or use coarse sandpaper around delicate areas to keep them. Another approach is to stabilize them with lacquer or cyanoacrylate. I think they give a lot more character to the piece. I learned that losing up to half of the high risk projects just makes the successful ones twice as valuable. However - this is just a suggestion. You do very nice work and are lucky to have a good source of olive. It is still very pretty without the knots.
i also have good sharpen tools ! bud i don't like to use glues !! i don't know is not my style i prefer the wood as natural possible can be !!! for all this time that i am turning wood the second time that i use CA glue is the video of the next weeks ! it was a so beautiful piece of wood and i don't like to loose it !!! thanks for sharing all those thoughts with me ! do you have any picture or video or fb or instagram account to see your work ??
I am sorry but I don't. I usually give things away since I usually make them with a person in mind. My wife has a few that I can photograph, but I'd have to email them. I started turning green wood about 30 years ago when I was poor and couldn't afford good wood. I used mesquite, southern live oak and some other very hard woods. The knots of the live oak have rays that look like spiders. I just got hold of some desert ironwood and look forward to lots of tool sharpening. I still prefer green hardwoods for turning. I also avoid glue and have never used CA glue. One thought about gluing is to use a temporary stabilizer such as hot glue or even CA and remove it afterward. Another idea is to highlight the crack. I gave a friend some malachite stone to fill a crack in a project and it looks beautiful. Right now I am looking at building a set of turning tools with carbide inserts and the others with tool steel.
30 years of turning Wow i am 28 years old ha ha ha ha !!! i like to try feel cracks with dust of rocks ! but i never try it because the epoxy in greece are very very expensive !!! so i put this idea at the list of '' one day '' ha ha ha !! the sharpen of the tools are really hard !! i have found my way ! and i don't know if you have try it but i will tell you this .... at the grinder you can put some soap ... before you sharpen your tools you put some soap and you don't care to watering the metal because the soap keep the steel cold as you sharpening !!! i know that for 30 years of experience that you have maybe this make you laugh but i find this and i like to share with you !! some friend that i have they get for making the tools with the inserts with meta that they found on the cars springs if you have a car garage you can ask thee for them ! they have some that people change and maybe they give you for free ! if you can't find just asked me to find some for you !!!

Καλή η προσπάθεια, αλλά για να κάνεις επίδειξη-μαθήματα, ιδιαίτερα από ένα μέσο που παρακολουθούν πολλοί, μάθε πρώτα να τορνίρεις. Και ξέρεις...... υπάρχουν κι άλλα εργαλεία για τόρνευση. Ανακάλυψέ τα.
