In one campaign I played in, there was a character who was a cleric who specialized in constructs. By far one of the coolest concept characters I've ever seen. She started out with plush teddy bear constructs that she could imbue with healing, so they'd walk towards you and give you a Cure Light Wounds when they adorably stumbled into your shin. And then of course at later levels she just had a clay golem following her around. We had to bend some rules and outright break some others to make it all work, but man, just the flavor of that character was worth it.

      Golems in DnD cheat though.
The original Golem is specifically said to work because its creator imbues it with divine authority in the form of a secret name of God, so it's "alive" because God can grant life.
Your average clay golem (and most of the other "X material" golems) are just statues that a spellcaster has shoved the living essence of a shackled elemental into, so they're not really "made alive" so much as they are walking coffins that become the new body of a creature that doesn't have a set "body/soul" distinction.
They are actually pretty horrific if you think about it, I mean most of the things Necromancers bring back are at least mindless, these things just look mindless because they are forced to do stuff, while inside the trapped mind of the elemental spirit is probably screaming bloody murder and cursing the day you were born...

Remember also that the gigant's INT is 6, a level of 5-year child. You will need to put a considerable effort in your words to convince it do something for you, not only because it might be unwilling, but also because it may not understand what you're talking about.

I like the idea of showing up to a place with one of these, and basically be "I'm the janitor." and convince it that you were sent there by the deity to spiff the place up.
Like "Just look at this! No-one has polished this gold statue of our deity in decades!" and get to work, kinda passive aggressively pointing out how "THIS is how it *should* look!" after finishing each piece. Could even clean out "heretical" pieces. Or collect tithing if that's a thing. I especially like the mental image of convincing it to lift you up to clean the statue, arguing that "I can't STAND on it. That'd be heresy.".

Idea for a blackstone gigant NPC.
Party is sent to an old rundown chathidrel, looking for (insert religous artifact). The chathidrel is overrun with vegetation and animals (sprinkle in any flavor of enemies "that make sense in the area" you like for a combat encounter if you're feeling spicy.) The party looks around and finds the door to the basment, they enter and are met by the gigant who acts as a tour guide teaching the party about the history of the chathidrel and the founding of the relegion, the gigant uses the petrified remains of bandits/theives that tried stealing the (insert religous artifact) as demnstrations of the historical events that lead to the founding of the relegion, finally the party (and gigant) arrive at the (insert religous artifact) chamber, if the party was sent by the same church they could show an insignia, or they could've escorted a memeber of the church (temporary cleric) of the church and tell the gigant that they'er here to retrive the artifact (the party can bring the gigant too if they'er feeling spicy) If the party was sent by bandits/theives they could try to lie to the gigant (if failed the party is TPKed if this is an early game quest.) Party gets mega rich but are hunted by the church.

I think I'll use this statblock for the Ungod in my campaign setting. The Ungod is a massive construct being created by a cult in hopes of overthrowing the gods themselves. Sort of a combo of the Numidium from Elder Scrolls and the mechanical god mentioned in SCP-001.

Eh, I'd prefer either the Rogue Eidolon powered by cultish madness or the Elder Eidolon powered by whatever forces lurk beyond the reaches of time and space. I suppose these three constructs form a trifecta of some sort. Oddly, the Rogue Eidolon inflicts pernament confusion on people, whereas the Gigant petrifies and then animates, so the Gigant seems like an upgrade of the Rogue Eidolon.

Somewhat off topic so forgive me but im trying to raise awareness of a cool opportunity. Creative Assembly has started to look at their next fantasy total war series (after Warhammer fantasy) they've explicitly said DND settings are a possibility.
While there are lots of great settings that would translate well to a total war game I think Darksun in particular would be AWESOME!!
If you agree, or think another DND setting would work well then let CA know now!
Its a longshot but the potential payoff is pretty epic!!!

Speaking as someone running a long-on-hiatus Eberron campaign, I'm thinking blackstone gigants could work as creations of the daelkyr Orlassk in that setting. Definitely helps that DD used art of the stone cursed for one of its abilities, since I've already used those for a cult of Orlassk in my campaign.

Worth noting that in 3e/3.6, a score of 30 was not the highest Strength could get -- ability scores had no upper limit. While rare, it was possible for a PC to have a Str of 30, enhanced by a single magic item to 36, by level 20, not to mention what can happen in epic levels.

Not from a movie, or from any one source really, but what about a painting monster? Players are already paranoid about statues, but not the paintings strewn across the dungeon walls. If there is a painting monster already in DnD then I've missed it and would love to hear about it.
The Shambler from Call of Cthulhu comes to mind, or the shadow imbued paintings on Thriller Bark in One Piece. A creature that lives inside a painting that can come out and get the players would be incredible for a horror session.
Perhaps you can't damage the creature, but you can damage its painting, turning it into a puzzle monster. Or maybe use paintings as doorways and teleport throughout the mansion. Maybe it only hunts those who fail to appreciate its painting, or seeks to pull people into landscape paintings to trap them as portraits.
Surely something like this exists, or if not, then it should. I don't know if you can do anything with this or would want to, but it could add a new dimension to your next haunted castle adventure.

I have the fondest memories of golems, granted this is not so much a typical golem, and that makes the experience better for its sentience. They are so much like children, trained, programmed, or whatnot with the simplest of actions, but of course with so much physical brutality in their ‘make’ its a wonderful dichotomy for the novice player to figure things out.
In my defense, NAT20 golem punch the dungeon wall to bypass all the traps in order to the exit safely on the otherside of the wall was necessary.

Thank the gods the Animate has 30 feet range and it remains animated for 1 hour, or until the giant is destroyed.
wait how many turn in an hour
    HO CRAP ! HO CRAP!
    600 turns
So in theory you can have army of +400 troops to charge a place
This thing on a battle field would be a murder machine . Those who fall to it will raise to fight for it.
The worst apart is it say petrified creature.
So dragons army can be a thing .
This just goes down a rabbit hole of just darkness.
I can see a church just amassing an army of stone slaves.
Then you maybe able to use stone shape on the petrified creature.
    fix them or mod them.

Zealots who voluntarily allow themselves to be ritualistically petrified are reborn either as helmed horrors or as constructs with their original stats except for the type change and new permanent damage resistances they hadn't had before, whichever transformation is more powerful. Sacrificial victims of truly vile deities whose souls are consumed in a ritual petrification gain stone golem stats instead of animated armor stats; if their souls are torturously bound to their new stone forms instead of consumed to power it, they become stone cursed (MPMM), compelled to feed others to the Gigant (if the Gigant touches someone petrified by a cursed, their petrification becomes permanent, albeit basic).

These things would be great for a Shadow of the Colessus style campaign, as each one is imbeued with a fragment of power you could flug them as being containers of that gods essences, so by killing them you could end up bring back a god.

It looks like this was designed to be a simple bruiser, but I like the idea of using these to give some real teeth to a faction not typically known for combat prowess. I can't help but think these would be amazing in the hands of peaceful gods who don't want their clerics and other followers fighting. A monastery dedicated to a peaceful way of life is attacked by a horde of fiendish orcs, the monks retreat into the inner sanctum; the orcs begin to loot and sack the town, but then the ground starts to shake, and the beautiful statues around the sanctum spring to life, laying waste to these would-be raiders! Once the fight is over, the monks begin to rebuild and give thanks to their god for the divine protection, their faith stronger than ever before.

I reckon one of these things could make for a really good warlock pact, if the character stumbled across one of these in an old decrepit tomb when they were young, and found the Gigant in service of a long forgotten/dead god. They were spared only because they promised to spread word of this God so that they might regain their power, and the Gigant itself acts as the players patron, gifting them powers as they spread word of this god more and more.

Finding proof that their master has done an action completely forbidden by the God that empowered them could be an interesting way to turn them against their master. If one somehow had two from different Gods with slightly different rules it could make a harder fight more interesting if you convinced one that their God’s rules had been broken but the other ones hasn’t.
