    I remember going to a Valve night at the Mass in Brixton and at the end of the night if you stood next to the bass bins you slid forwards on all the beer and sweat on the floor when the bass hit. I remeber when i first entered the room it was like you were swimming in sound, completely overwhelming and the quality was amazing compared to other nights in the same venue. This sound system was the real deal, I've never experienced anything like it since.

    This is always awesome to watch as much as it is nostalgic and also a bit sad and depressing. How things have changed so much. What we had vs what we have now…it’s just not the same and it never will be. Luckily we have a place like TH-cam to bring us back in time

    12:48 - The infamous speech from Dillinja. It's weird, the period he's talking about (roughly 98-01) is considered somewhat of a golden age for drum and bass.
    Producers definitely had a techno influence, minimal structures, stripped back drums and clinical synth/basslines, but that didn't stop it being good.
    Tracks like The Nine, Wormhole by ER&O and all the tunes that came after are highly respected now.
    Ironically, the period where Dillinja is talking about things getting good again (03 onwards) is undoubtedly where fans thought Karl was at his worst and that era is now considered pretty embarrassing in many ways.
    Drum and bass has changed a lot over the years but from 93-98, Dillinja was really at the top of the pile, pretty much everything from Digital Cloning to Hard Noize is considered a classic, say what you want about his later stuff, but he will always be a king.

      98-01 is FAR from the golden era.

    • @heartsoulrecordings5799
      @heartsoulrecordings5799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thats because the foundation is '92 to '97, Hardcore/Jungle/Drum and Bass. That is the root sound which was always about making people dance. The groove of the beat and the bass was essential.
      And thats Dillinja's roots.
      '98 saw the introduction of the Technoey influence, which went into a harder darker sound, focusing on distorted ripping sounds and less on the dancing part. And it was intentional to put off a certain type of crowd because there was too much trouble at events.
      Drum and Bass after that became something else. Less about the rhythm and groove and more about the sound design. And for the people that followed that or came into it later, to them, the '98+ era will sound like their Golden Age. The root of their sound.
      Its almost like a different music, but its all under the umbrella of Drum and Bass.
      But we have a seen a return to the source these past couple years. It certainly got my attention !

    I heard them play in Leeds on (part of) the valve system about the time this was made (the Big Bad Bass album had just dropped) and it was ludicrous. Crystal clear and despite being ten times the volume of God, because the system was so clear you could still talk relatively normally over it, it was nuts.

    I have met, experienced and analysed many many SOUND ENGINEERS, some real article (ARTICAAL!) some fake ass (IMITATORS) and the evaluation I conclude is that qualifications have nothing much to do with how competent an engineer or technician is..what is required and important is a thorough knowledge of the SOUND AND GENRE as the combination of variables and levels in terms of frequencies and wavelengths must be enhanced accordingly and someone who isn't up 2 paar with such intelligent, complex and evolving sounds will not do justice to the set or the scene as a whole..I have seen ppl with many qualifications and this document and that course but someone who has been working in the industry for time and has the true interest, knowledge and experience WILL RUN RINGS ROUND THEM and the equipment they had to work with especially during early days puts them at a clear advantage coz they appreciate the technology
