    We will probably be ordering the OMTech 100W 24x40 tomorrow. Just started following you recently and lone and behold when I do a TH-cam search on this laser your 'New Laser Day' comes up! Comparing the different models and wanting between 80-130W in this price range and having some kind of US support led me back to OMTech for the purchase. Yep... Probably going to build or weld up a stand with some kind of storage below the unit. Thanks for sharing the unboxing!

    Where did you get the pallet racking? That looks like it worked really well for a table. We got an identical laser delivered today and have a need for a table for it now.

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      It just came from manards. Though, a few months later and I do regret building the table this way. It's slightly wobbly, and it's like 6 or 8" larger than the laser on all sides, which is just wasted space. Someday I'll take this apart and replace it with a 2x4 and plywood box. Maybe with some drawers underneath for material storage

    You went with the small one. with such a large shop size?

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      40x24 is not exactly small for a laser. It still takes up a pretty decent amount of room
      That being said, the biggest reason I didn't go for the bigger one was cost. Theres a big cost jump between the 100W model and then 130 and 150W models. And the 100W is already overkill for what I need.

    I'm looking into getting this same laser, will it cut 1/2" mdf in one pass, if so what speed and power?

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      It'll probably cut 1/2" MDF, not sure if you would want to do it in one pass, and I'm not sure the edges will look nice. Maybe if you swapped to a longer focal length lens and added a better airblast. Lasers are great for cutting this stuff quickly, not so great for cutting thicker stuff. A CNC router would be much faster for 1/2" MDF.

    • @woodartcncsigns
      @woodartcncsigns ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AudacityMicro I have a CNC machine but it won't cut the fine line I need, lettering also comes out not so good since it can't do inside corners with an 1/8 bit very well. I planned on using my compressor for the air assist and started looking into a 4" focal lens.

    • @AudacityMicro

      I do not have any affiliation with the company, and I can say that I definitely like the laser. I'm really glad that I upgraded the ventilation, and the autofocus isn't quite useless, but pretty close. But overall I am very happy with it. It takes occasional maintenance in terms of cleaning and alignment but I haven't found it too bad. Overall it just runs and runs. I use it probably 10 hours a week, and haven't had any major issues.

      Complaining about speed. How that ?

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure it depends on what you are doing, and the power of your laser. This one is a 100W, and I only do cutting in easy to cut materials, so I don't have issues with speed. 90% of the time I'm just cutting cardboard, and it's plenty fast. Doing things like rastering large grayscale images can be rather slow, but that's true with all Cartesian lasers (as opposed to galvos).

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am cutting cardboard at about 50mm/sec. most of the other materials I cut land between 10 and 30 mm/sec. And I engrave at around 170mm/sec. If that helps at all.

    Hey does this model include air assist?

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It does, though, I recently upgraded to a version that lets me run it off my air compressor, and that made a big difference on cutting thicker materials. It now easily cuts 1/2" MDF. Even 3/8" was a struggle before I upgraded.

    • @AudacityMicro

      They are just over-ear headphones. My shop is generally moderately loud since I'm primarily a machine shop. They let me listen to audiobooks and keep a large percentage of the sound out.

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's maybe 24" tall. I can't imagine anyone not needing a stand, though OMtech does have a different style unit that is on wheels. It's more expensive, but might honestly be worth it.

      61x38x27" for the main enclosure itself, not including anything that might be sticking off, like the vent in the back, or the tube extension on the right

      I recently rebuilt my table for it, I made it 30" tall, and that ended up being too tall. It's usable for me being ~6' tall, but my wife has a hard time. I would probably go with a 25ish tall table next time.

    can it cut through 1 inch of wood?

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Theoretically yes, with enough time and passes, but it would give you a terrible burned finish. It *can* but it's not the right tool for the job. A CNC router works better for anything thicker than about 3/8". Lasers are in their element for 3/8" and thinner.

  • @juraji0
    @juraji0 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whe you're cutting through materials that are thicker you will want to use a lens with a longer focal length , my typical go to is a 63mm lens for materials up to half inch thick .
    Also don't run your laser at 100% you will kill your tube a lot faster

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's on my list of changes to make! I think I'll mostly be running thicker materials, so the longer focal length will come on handy.
      And yeah, they gave me a document that has tube life compared to power setting. It diminishes fairly rapidly at higher power settings.

    • @juraji0
      @juraji0 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had my laser for about 3 years , not the same brand as yours but its similar . I've used all the different lenses , the ones I use by far the most is the 63 but if I'm cutting thick foam like a inch plus I use the 120mm lens.
      I use lenses from cloudray on aliexpress . Cloudray II-VI Znse USA . Those are the ones I found to be the best quality for the price at around $20 -$30 per lens . The second thing I would highly recommend is having air assist when cutting almost everything , if you will be cutting thicker material like I did I would hook up your shop air with a separate regulator . Whe I cut over half inch ill usually set that at about 20psi and it works much better than the stock air pumps that barely put out any pressure. Oh also make sure you're cleaning your mirrors and the output lens of your laser tube , I only cleaned the laser tube output lens very infrequently and I ended up killing my tube that way.
      On the new reci tubes there is a separate replaceable lens but on my old one there wasn't. Lastly make sure you vent that suckered good , almost everything you will cut will produce cancerous fumes.
      Sorry didn't mean to write a book on this , just some tips from my experiences .

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      all very good info, thanks!
      I didn't even know you didn't had to clean the lens on the tube! thanks for the heads up 😬. I do have good ventilation at very least now. We got that hooked up the other day

      Thank you, yes its just as easy to use a manual gauge to set focus. Does that model have a chip tray? how do you think it would cut 1/2" high grade plywood. I have a router but have a need to cut some finer detail. Thank you!

    • @johnprice7099

      I'm looking at same machine or a 130W

    • @AudacityMicro
      @AudacityMicro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used it to cut 3/8" ply, and wasn't super impressed. Though to be fair, I was using construction grade stuff, not the the higher quality stuff that is normally recommended for lasers. This laser also isn't wide enough for 48" sheet, which would be a big plus with the 130W if I remember correctly. I would also like the longer focal length less, that should help significantly with the thicker materials. But I wouldn't recommend the stock setup for it.
