Thanks for honouring my request, and completing this remake of my favorite lesson Brian ...
These last seven years have gone by so quickly, and after being originally attracted to your channel by the earliest Chord Tone Soloing (Parts 1-9), and the Really Hearing Modes (Parts 1-4) back in 2017, it was the first version of this lesson (aka: Unconventional Method of ... ) in 2018 that really drew my attention to the theory aspect of the guitar. The improved version in 2020 was far superior quality, with improved film and graphic quality.
This latest video/lesson seems to have become even more enjoyable, the film quality and graphics are fantastic .... and the theoretical message delivered even clearer (with no disrespect to the brilliant original versions), and you've made it far easier to absorb.
I share your affection for this particular subject matter, and compliment you on this brilliant NEW production .... cheers my friend.

This is a pretty cool idea! Definitely ties together many of the fundamentals: note positions, triads on 123 & 234, progressions, keys--and helps automatize them. I'm definitely going to try this out. Thank you!

BTW, it's a great detail that you mention how long it took you how to learn this and how long a learner would take to eventually become better at it. That's amazing!! So easy! Caged is the next thing I'm adding into my daily practice routine. I've been cheating on guitar with piano and getting the spring garden in before we get an emp strike. Praying for world peace to continue learning and living but prepping for societal collapse and going back to the stone age.

It's really about playing the triads on adjacent strings (top 3 / top-middle 3 strings) throught the 12 keys utilizing a certain chord progression and the circle of fifths.

Great lesson. How fun, the guitar puzzle. C shape encompasses, but why no D shape? I find myself using it a lot.
The C shape and D shape are connected. For this exercise I prefer to specifically use the 4-sting shape that I showed here. It works perfectly for the exercise!
Interesting fact: the song "Poison" from Alice Cooper uses the 4-chord progression (minor variant) in 4 different keys. 😀
I think where beginners might get lost/confused is by suggesting a I - V - vi - IV ( 'one, five, six, four chord progression') equals C - G - Am - F in both C major and A minor keys.
I realise that Brian doesn't explicitly do this, but by referring to the C as the 'one chord' throughout but also saying there are only 12 keys and C major is the same as A minor it might lead someone to think the 'one chord' in A minor is also C - it obviously isn't.
He does say, at 5.12, that you can do the progression for all 24 keys if that's your thing, but doesn't clearly point out that a 'one, five, six, four chord progression' in a minor key is not the same chords as a major key version.
In the A minor key C - G - Am - F would be III - VII - i - VI. Same exact chords in same order, different progression. That is, the C major chord in the key of A minor is not the 'one chord' it's the 'third chord': Amin - Bdim - C - Dmin - Emin - F - G. The A minor chord is the 'one chord'.
The progression: i - v - VI - iv ( 'one, five, six, four') in A minor would be Am - Em - F - Dm. Arguably, this is not 'a generic pop chord progression' -at least not quite as generic as the major version.
So if the band says 'hey, new guitarist this song is a simple one five six four in A minor' the guitarist knows to play Am - Em - F - Dm, not 'oh yeah, that's the generic C - G - Am -F'. Okay, maybe they're not ready for playing in a band if they make that mistake, but you get my point.
The immersion method still works for 'all keys', either you have to remember a I - V - vi - IV in major is a III - VII - i - VI in minor or you can play 12 versions in major then 12 versions of a i - v - VI - iv in minor. I think the latter is more useful although it will make the practise session twice as long and you will need some additional chord shapes to cope with all those minor chords.

there is know point to memorize the fret board, it all changes when you change tunings

I've watched the prior version of this video and tried that method and now watching this video, I find myself getting lost in the same place. After moving out of the 1st 3 frets position, how do you find the next position, say in the key of C major as in the video? Nothing shows us how to move or readily find the next C position. You move as someone who obviously knows the fretboard 👍. For this like me who's focus is concentrate on learning the fret board, finding the next "C' or whatever note outside the first 3 frets is not so intuitive in this video. Thanks for any suggestions 🤗
you still need to learn the notes, m8.
It's the CAGED system. This method assumes that you have internalized the notes on the low E-string and A-string, which is all that is required to apply the CAGED system. Understanding how to apply the CAGED system will then allow you to find these shapes on the upper strings. As I said, it may take a week or so just to get through the first key, but each subsequent key will get easier once you start to recognize the same connections occurring over and over again!

that is not my problem, my problem is coming from a piano player, and trying to view each string as a keyboard started on a different note
on guitar, for piano players, there are 6 keyboards, and to make a chord, you do it on multiple keyboards

NOPE - DISAGREE > "Fretanonmy" is like 3 bucks - and it was the best way for me to learn every note - and I learned it in 3 weekends (SATURDAY and SUNDAY only) While watching TV - BY THE THIRD WEEK - I had every note known and THEN you internalize them ON THE LAST DAY - BECAUSE only at the point of knowing something can you internalize them
That's 3 bucks well spent - you managed to internalize the entire fretboard, learn several chord fingerings and the root note position in each chord within the CAGED system in one day whilst watching TV...
You should study constitutional law and you'll have a really easy time understanding your tax forms.
You play a chord that looks nothing like a G chord, but you call it a “G shape.” Then you play a chord that looks nothing like a C, but you call it a “C shape.” Then you play a D chord, but you call it yet another shape. See where I’m going with this? This method could be helpful if only the chord shapes actually looked like what you say they are. As it is it’s a mess.
LOL your comment lets me know that you just started learning how to play guitar. I don't even have a year under my belt but I know that... for example... the chord that supposedly looks nothing like a c chord but he says it's the "c shape." You are forgetting to take into consideration that the strings that you strum when you play a c chord arent just the 3 strings that your fingers are on. You have to move the shape by putting your fingers to also play the notes that the nut of the guitar plays. You should try to be nicer to others... just because you dont know how something works, doesn't mean it's wrong.
It's all just arbitrary labels. Some knucklehead decided to call pentatonic position #1..."pentatonic position #1"....and we all just blindly accepted that arbitrary label. For some reason, people seem to have problems with the labels of "C shape", "E shape", etc. However it is all just arbitrary labels to the shapes that are formed on the fretboard. By all means, feel free to apply your own arbitrary labels to these shapes if it makes it easier to remember!
@@yankeeversethe only C shape that actually yields a C chord is the one played at the 1st and 13th frets. The inversions are C chords, but they aren’t the C shape. And yes, if I don’t understand how something works, that DOES mean it’s wrong. Anything truly useful would be immediately understandable.
