  • Bit special on the tour this morning. Galway musician Tom Flanagan together with son Kevin @flgnk brought along a guitar and did a stirring version of Christie Moore's Viva la Quinta Brigada. Tom gives intro to Irish involvement before launching in at 3min t.co/219UnLanMv

Frank Ryan was a strange one - he fought well in Spain for the Republic then joined the Nazis in Germany and worked for the fascists.

    • @jackosullivan6784

He died a staunch anti fascist socialist even the Germans who knew him said they never changed his policitical stance even though he did attempt to help them invade Ireland.
A bizarre one for certain but likely viewed in the context that your enemies (Britain) enemy is your ally (Germany).

And the people who became the Connolly Column fought for some time under the command of one George Nathan, a former Black&Tan. History is rarely as neat and tidy as we would like it to be.

The Catholic Church kept Ireland backwards for centuries, it has a lot to answer for, it’s why the “thick paddy” joke originated.

Who do you think took the Irish out of the bog and educated them at the price of their own lives in certain cases? It was the Catholic clergy who defied the penal laws and educated the Irish which eventually led to Irish independence, so stop talking bullshit.

700 hundred Irishmen formed the Fifth Brigade, commanded by General O’Duffy and they fought by the side of Franco ( I understand them..they were fervent Catholics..reds were killing people because their religious faith..see Paracuellos, for example). Because they were very little unit were integrated in the Spanish Foreign Legion.
The Irish communists fought in the XVth International Brigade, by the side of English, American and other European communists…with very bad results.
