As I understand it, inheritance of such titles is based on the original grant of the title which usually specifies that the title is to be passed to male heirs. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a nice idea if a law was passed superseding such clauses granting a title that is about to go extinct to the closest female relative of the most recent duke. His ancestor "was hung"?! That's quite a personal detail to reveal! Did the family keep track of that sort of thing? Oh, pardon me, he meant to say "He was hanged". That makes more sense within the context.
Nathan Caravaggio Listen carefully to the video. The ancestor was hung, that is to say suspended, for three hours on a gibbet then cut down and dismembered and his limbs were hung on the gates of the main cities of Scotland. That is different from saying the man was taken out and hanged by the neck until dead, as the usual sentence went. He said what he meant to say. His ancestor's body was used to strike fear in the heart of anyone who might do what he did.
We've had Dukedoms created until the present day? Lol Prince Andrew Prince William Prince Harry and Prince Edward have all be created Dukes and if things don't change only Prince Harry's Dukedom will continue as Prince Andrew has no son and Prince Edward's new Dukedom is only for life...(absolutely ridiculous) also don't forget about the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester created in the early 20th century 1920s and 1930s. Those two Dukedoms will become non royal when the current holders die. If Prince Archie has a son then that son will become His Grace the 3rd Duke of Sussex.
When you consider how many aristocrats are relatively impoverished nowadays, that a lot probably couldn't afford the coronation robes, you have to wonder what Charles' coronation will be like.
So if the Duke of Antholl could only get out of by committing a crime or dying, what make the Duke of St Albans so special that he can just ‘give it up?’
This explains how we came to America. the first son inherited everything. The rest of us took a boat to the new world. I can trace my line through my grandmothers , our family is good sized, according to genelogy I have about 185,000,000 cousins from King James V of Scots.
I genuinely believe that the public should have a say in electing new hereditary Dukes, Earls, Barons. People who have served our country (male or female). It would be like Alan Sugar in the house of Lords where they have done good and are experienced enough to help our country. Hereditary titles aren't all bad. They create interest and history as well as instilling responsibility in future generations to help our country.

Welsh as far as I know is a celtic language and therefore* older than english which is germanic in origin.
Now say that again. Please.

@@653j521 I could be wrong but I think @Nathan Caravaggio meant he was "hung" as in "well hung" in the genitals. Making a joke.

But for a mere three hours? That may be enough for an heir, but certainly not for a spare as well.
😂😂
The picture was “hung.” The criminal was “hanged.” Another reason why English is a tough language to learn.
I do not think the creation of dukedoms should be inconceivable, this is a representation of our heritage.
If Prince Archie has a son then that son will become His Grace the 3rd Duke of Sussex.
nice documentary.. thnks for the upload.
the Duke of Atholl is South African love his accent.
I also didn't realise that !
When can’t recall all of your titles by memory...
When you consider how many aristocrats are relatively impoverished nowadays, that a lot probably couldn't afford the coronation robes, you have to wonder what Charles' coronation will be like.
Beautiful. Totally relevant to the material my channel produces.
So if the Duke of Antholl could only get out of by committing a crime or dying, what make the Duke of St Albans so special that he can just ‘give it up?’
Queen Elizabeth has always been so beautiful.
This was so cool!
At 49, how could a grateful king create a dukedom for overseeing the Scots' signing the Act of Union when there was no king. (Anne was queen regnant.)
Really important if you can't remember all your titles....one of the reasons the States revolted.
This explains how we came to America. the first son inherited everything. The rest of us took a boat to the new world. I can trace my line through my grandmothers , our family is good sized, according to genelogy I have about 185,000,000 cousins from King James V of Scots.
The people that have the greatest potential violence are always in the strongest position when it comes to negotiating over resource allocation.
On watching Tony Robinson and his fantastic findings regarding the rightful heir to the throne, I wonder if these dukes are really dukes.
Fascinating.
Bizarre lottery ticket.

. . . just an aimless life. Find a project, volunteer. . .etc., etc., etc.
I love Lady Rosemary lol. I hate things on a slant too. Knew exactly what she meant. That desk needs to be parallel with the rug, ON the rug.
Lady Violet is an amazingly impressive woman. I’d love to meet the whole family.
What about the Duke of Hazard.
Alex Kealey or the Duke Of Earl
How moving that Handel's imperial music has long outlived its monarchs and aristocrats.
