I only watch about a third of the movies you recommend, but 100% of those are excellent and i NEVER would have known about them but for you, so THANKS!
hey, american here, i've been subbed to you for at least a year now, and I super love your recommendations! I really love your Australian 70s movie picks, I love Mad Max, and to hear about all the other movies being made at that time is fantastic. I'm 55, so same demographic as you, I love exploitation movies from the 70s (Pam Grier, rarw!!) I wish you had 100x the subs you currently have, I appreciate your love of physical media, cuz fuck those studios that yank access on a whim. I also love Luna. Stay excellent, my brother!
“Oldboy” (2003) is still my favorite Korean movie of all time. Something about Koreans and revenge. I’ve watched it a good half a dozen times. That same year there were two other great Korean movies. One is more meditative: “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter … and Spring” (2003). The other is another murder, mystery and investigation movie: “Memories of Murder” (2003). A banner year for Korean cinema.
@@terrytalksmovies The original is just outstanding! Last night I watched “Memories of Murder” (2003) again for the first time since watching it in theaters 20 years ago. Top notch and just excellent on so many levels! A must watch! I could not track down a digital copy to purchase but found it on Tubi with ads. Curzon Film has a loaded 4K region-free version with lots of extras and there are also The Criterion Collection's versions.
Very good pronunciation of the Korean names. I never served in 8th Army or Korea (although I have worked on 8th Army Excercises in the US), but from what have heard, Mexican Standoffs in the JSA have not been uncommon since the Armistice in 1953 . . . .
I recommended JSA a while ago. But I think it didn't had a huge release on physical media or streaming in the west. I have the 2003 DVD. As a history buff, I had known what the JSA is and ofc since the German reunification was just a bit more then a decade ago, it drew my attention. So tense and a kind of heartbreaking.
I went to film school for a year and a half. Lots of fun, didn't prepare me for the business side of film making and I didn't really ever get into the industry. But deepened my love of film and then I understood anyone getting anything remotely good done put in maximum effort to get it there. I've only seen Darling of these, yes I did dismiss it at first but wanted to see it for Schlesinger when I was a completist. Very good, very biting. The others I will look for, been meaning to see JSA as it's mentioned as a great film of the current Korean wave.
I do think this labels special editions are good, I just wish they didn’t cost so much to import to UK, because I’d get more. I’ve got the Katakouris Japanese remake, which I liked and would recommend, great fun. The other, main two you review, Darling and JSA, I’ve seen. Not seen the Christie for years, I’d say it’s decently thought of over here, but I need to see it again now. I’m a bit of a mid-late career Bogarde fan, so that fits, too. I bought the Arrow blu ray of JSA and thought it very good for the reasons you give. If I didn’t have it I’d definitely get the 4K version. I’m not really one for art cards and posters, but have to confess the posters you showed looked very good indeed. I wish all posters were that good. Many are rubbish. I confess to not fancying everything you review, but sometimes you just hit the spot for me and your general chat is always good, whatever. I’m not really into ‘fun’ films as such, preferring World Cinema or Art House stuff. I do enjoy SF and Film Noir. Many thanks, Terry!
My pleasure, Richard. I try to keep the channel as varied as I can. Being fortunate in getting these review copies of films is something I always get stunned by. They also take me out of my comfort zone of cinema a lot of the time and it's never a bad experience.
Terry, at about 20:03 minutes you have a glitch-it looks like you'd originally had another take in there, but it didn't stretch to fit so there was a frame or two of black before the other take, then back to the main talk. At 20:30 music tries to come in for a second as well....
JSA is the only one of these I've seen (I dimly recall having seen the Japanese remake of Quiet Family but don't think I ever saw the original), and I only saw that on a really shitty DVD. But I remember really liking it despite that, so I'll definitely invest in this upgrade. And Darling as well.
Darling just brilliant film, last time I saw this film was 40 years ago on tv, I have order this, the British copy of this has no extras at all. Julie Christe was in Sci fi classic tv A for Andromdra, that got her the role in Darling. We Loved Dating the Enemy, brought the dvd over a decade ago, Heather and I enjoyed it. I think JSA sounds interesting, maybe I buy it.
Dirk Bogard came a long way from being a British Army IMINT intelligence Major in MARKET GARDEN during WWII. He also came long way from being the "Rock Hudson of the Odeon."
yeah the "graffiti alley" is cool!! also with the full shelves, as much as thats a Lot like my home, i feel my eyes trying to make out what you've got!
Terry: For sure I'll check into "JSA". Question--- You had mentioned on several occasions about Australian censorship laws. How restrictive are they??? Also, are you going to host a live-chat in the near future? Thanks!!!
A Double Feature of "Darling" and "Georgie Girl." Just ordered a DVD copy of JSA on e-bay for a fiver. Broaden our horizons in a good way. Practice maximum safety now that the bird flu is the blowfly flu.
well i have only seen 'Darling' from these and i remember very little except the nee socks and should realy watch it again so thats 5 more films add to my watch list thats make 6 add today along with 'Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In', i seem to spend more and more time looking for films than watching them now days
First up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Campion ... is a Kiwi, born here made her first movies here (in NZ).... You "might" be thinking of Gillian Armstrong, (My Brilliant Career) who is definitely an Aussie.
You're right that JSA is an incredible film. I was very fortunate to screen it in Perth when I ran an Asian film festival there.
Cool! It works on so many levels.
I never realised 'The Happiness of the Katakuris' was based on another film. Definitely on my watchlist now…
Both are worth it.
I only watch about a third of the movies you recommend, but 100% of those are excellent and i NEVER would have known about them but for you, so THANKS!

I wish I had 100x too. I could go back to visit Japan on the ad revenue! Thanks so much for liking and supporting the channel. I really appreciate it.
With your spectacular recommendation for JSA I scuttled off and and ordered the blurry.
I hope it lives up to my hype. 😉😀
@@terrytalksmovies I'm sure I'll like it and its good for me to expand my foreign language collection.

Oldboy is brilliant. I don't know why Spike Lee tried to remake it.

The tensions on that border are horrible. JSA is really worth seeing, partly for that reason.
@@terrytalksmovies They have had violent events in the place where they are supposed to be negotiating peace . . . for 71 years . . . .
Another great show, Terry. I'll definitely attempt to watch all of these films, and JSA is probably at the top of my list now, that it wasn't before.
It is extraordinarily good.

Heartbreaking, indeed. Also, very humanist in a wonderful way.
I have Kim Gynell’s autograph from his Col’n Carpenter character. A lot of the old Channel 10 people shopped at our local shopping centre.
You lived on the posh side of town in those days. 😀😉😜
New sub from Ireland here, Terry. I like your style.
Thanks, Bryan. Stay well, mate.

The Happiness of The Katakuris is on Tubi at the moment if you want to revisit it.
I'll need to push JSA further up my Arrow streaming list then 👍
It's really worthwhile.

JSA is really interesting and tragic.
Dirk Bogard came a long way from being a British Army IMINT intelligence Major in MARKET GARDEN during WWII. He also came long way from being the "Rock Hudson of the Odeon."
His credibility was always a good selling point. He was never bad in a movie, even though some of his movies were bad.
@@terrytalksmovies Even when he was in a "bad" movie, he never seemed dishonest (even in things like Simba or The Sea Shall Not Have Them0.
I like the backdrop. It's visually interesting but doesn't trigger my "OCD" like the messy collection of discs on the shelves behind you. 🤓
I have other backgrounds on order, too. Glad you like it.

Not really bad these days. The videos are marked with ratings but although hard core is banned, most movies get through.

Will do. Can't take chances. 😉

us Aussies are always trying to take credit for New Zealand talent, lol. NZ punches way above its weight!
