    Duct tape is like "The Force."
    It has a light side and a dark side. And binds the Universe together. 🥰 Never leave home without it.

    Pete peeve of mine… standby for an expansion of Jimmy’s explanation that no-one else asked for.
    Gaffa tape is a fibre reinforced tape that can be torn by shearing it and has a relatively clean edge. Duct tape however is a thinner, non reinforced tape that is somewhat pliable, semi elastic and tears by over-stretching it. It is essentially double width electrical tape with the same conductivity insulating properties. It is used to stretch and wrap around Air-conditioning ‘ducts’.
    Hence the name….Duct tape. As always great content from Cade Media 👍

    I had the top tube on my Canyon Endurace repaired by a carbon repair guy here in south Florida just over 1 year ago. 15,000miles later and the repair still looks great. He repainted it and refinished it after and it looks as if nothing ever happened. It was a full crack around the whole top tube, right in the middle of the tube. Happened as a result of a collision with a car that made a u turn out of no where right in front of me.

    I bought a Giant Defy Advanced (~2012) a couple of years ago from an old guy who had accidentally stuck a metal rod through the back wheel/spokes and fractured the chain stay on one side. A boat builder friend did a carbon repair which is both obvious (8cm long black wrap that kind of looks like duct tape) and very strong. It's my broken wing.

    Originally the name came from "duck cloth" that was used for the backing. The product has never had anything to do with ducts. Gaffers tape is similar product that very importantly has synthetic glue that does not leave residue on eqipment and can be removed without stripping paint off surfaces.

  • @SignorLuigi
    @SignorLuigi ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Sounds like a really good reason to have a painted carbon bike (rather than one with no paint to save weight) is the paint's ability to reveal potential flaws in the carbon. Stay safe, my friends.

    • @WepaPix
      @WepaPix ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paint also protects against the UV light if someone's concerned. I rather have paint because it looks cool, not sure I'm a fan of a full all black trend. Nice bike but now everyone's bike looks exactly the same LOL. Let's bring colors back!

      @@WepaPix I live in the US. After doing my due diligence on researching various US titanium bike manufactures, I decided to buy a Litespeed titanium bike as they hit the value/cost sweet spot for my budget. I did get my bike from them during a 10% off promotion. Every little bit helps. Some of the real high end, boutique titanium bike manufactures in the US are beyond my financial resources. I toured the Litespeed factory in Tennessee before making the purchase as I live in an adjoining state. I liked seeing a fair number of seasoned employees building the bikes. I'm all for promoting apprentice workers. But when it comes to my own bike, I want to know the people building it have been at their craft for a good amount of time. The welds on my bike are beautiful. Good craftsmanship is something I value. I hope this helps a little bit.

    5:33 Jimmi beat me to it! I was waiting patiently to mention that at least over here in the US they are completely different kinds of tape. The main feature of gaffer tape, as I understand it, is that it is less likely than other tapes to leave residue and adhesive all over what it was stuck to.

    Have I had a carbon frame cracked and then repaired - Yes. I crashed my 2012 Roubaix in the sprint at the end of "Tour Bxl" - foot came out of the pedal at 40+Km/hr. Went down HARD. Broke my wrist and still rode home unaware I'd cracked the seat tube. Bike shop spotted it when I put in the bike for a post crash test/service. Had the frame professionally repaired - even had a warranty on the repair. Nine months later the crack re-appeared. Had the repair repaired on the warranty of the repair (?!?) but I've now retired this bike to the indoor trainer. It does go outside - but only when I have no other options as my current bike is being repaired etc.

    Duct tape is nick named duck tape from the duck cloth it was originally made from. Duck Tape the brand came later. Gaffer tape is an entirely different product made using cloth vs vinyl. Gaffer tape does not stretch or flex. You're using the wrong term entirely for that product. Never seen gaffer tape anywhere outside a hardware store, but you can find duct tape all over.

    I concur with the carbon dude, using x-ray to find fractures is difficult at best. Like a doctor looking at a chest x-ray, you need very keen skills to find whatever you're looking for yet you may still miss things. X-ray is also used extensively in the production of electronics to examine PCBs.

  • @joekawasaki

    Duct tape is silver & made for permanent adhesion and sealing of household ventilation ducts. Gaffer tape is similar but it is meant to be temporary to fix things on a movie set & pulled up without damage to the surface.

    Duct tape and gaffer tape aren't the same. Since forced air heating is unusual in the UK, I can understand it being vague.
    [Duct tape is usually constructed using polyethylene whereas gaffer tape is cloth backed and made using a synthetic rubber-based adhesion system. Duct tape can have a shiny, reflective backing which makes it good for use in more industrial settings; whereas gaffer tape is often matte to prevent light reflection.]
    - DUCT TAPE OR GAFFER TAPE - WHICH IS BEST?
    Gaffer inherently has much greater strength.
