Star Ocean 2 was the game that got me into JRPGs. I wasn't feeling turn based combat yet. My friend recommended this one to me because it was action based. After that I got Golden Sun, and started to appreciate the turn based style.
Erick, I agree that Trails of Cold Steel are great games, with deep stories. I will be doing a run through on the series, starting with Cold Steel 1, starting next week. Thanks for sharing this with us.
So the DBZ kakarot game is like an open world rpg fighter? Sounds pretty cool. Does it play well on switch? I see it has a discount and could buy it for cheap with the dlc
It is not full open world, but close enough. It is more like you have locations of open areas, but expect it to be BOTW. It is still super fun to fly in the skies. Just note that at some points you are very limited at what you can do, as you are locked to a certain character and have to follow the story with barely any time for doing side quests. It is still very good game. If you enjoyed the avatar battles in .hack gu, or the bosses in naruto storm or even asura wrath, you are going to enjoy.
It’s always been debated on whether or not the Yakuza games(0-6 and the Jusgement Games) were RPGs. I tend to call them Action games with RPG elements. You are right though, the Judgement games are MUST plays
@@jonathansoko1085 I agree, much like Zelda for instance. It has a lot that would make you think it is but they aren’t really RPGs, just Action-Adventure
RPG is role-playing games.. They focus on playing the role of a specific character and has a focus on the narrative of said character... Yakuza games you all play the role of Kiryu and see him develop and the story revolves around him and you make choices that affect the story and can interact with npcs to get a feel of the world youre in... Its definitely rpg.
@@byronbarrientos8471 No, it isnt. You have the right idea of rpg at the START of your comment but you IGNORE EVERYTHING else. Judging by your take, master blaster is a rpg. Unicron overlord is fucking amazing....just wish there was some more post game content.....P3R is just WOW...I played the original and this is a love letter to the people who played it
I have played both of those Trails of Cold Steel games and both are very much, worth playing. I am about to start live streaming game play, starting next week..
Try then Yakuza 7 and 8, very awesome RPGs. And if you like brawlers, then definitely try Judgement games, especially Lost Judgement, fighting in this game and side stuff is fantastic.
Only thing id disagree with is Star Ocean remake being hard. This one is way easier than the OG with how they made chain battles giving so much XP and the skill system is so strong.
Would not recommend doing that. The best part of Trails of Cold Steel 3 /4 (by far) is the parts where all of the characters from previous games get together -- if you don't know the prior personalities those moments will end up being too confusing. Sad to say but if you're ok with retro games, would recommend starting at Sky first chapter and second chapter and seeing whether you like this style of game. If you're not ok with retro games, Falcom's rumored to be remastering them in a few years
I started with cold steel 1 and I’m not sure it was a great idea. I do like the story but it can be a tad slow at times. It took me a stupid amount of time to finish 1 where I felt I had to force myself to get through because 2 was going to be better. Now I’m on 2 and having the same problem. Slow build up and simplistic battle system just doesn’t get me real excited. I play it every now and then when I know I’ll have a good amount of time to get immersed but I often drop it for a while to play something that is just a little more fast paced either story wise or combat wise. I would recommend the opposite that most people do and start with whichever one you think you will like the most. Then decide where you want to go from there depending on how you like it. If you try to start at the beginning you may feel like your just wasting your precious time that might already be taken up by the endless sea of games we have now days.
@@russellg9622 Cold Steel 1 isn't the beginning though. To the original q, did you end up playing 3 and 4? I feel like without the backstory none of the emotional beats would hit and you wouldn't actually know any of the characters or how to use them. To me it just seems like it'd be a complete waste
You should play trails in the sky 1, 2 and 3 first which in my opinion are the best in the trails series, don't skip the third one like some people recommend, it's an awesome game and adds massively to the story. There is an Evo Japanese version of these games that are better than the original psp versions, they're the same as the PS4 versions of zero and azure graphically and can be played on a vita, pstv or pc with translation patches (for vita and pstv). I'd probably recommend playing zero and azure next, though some will recommend playing cold steel 1 and 2 first so that's your choice. Cold steel 3 then 4 then reverie after that. I definitely wouldn't recommend skipping cold steel 1 and 2 before playing 3 and 4, so many things will go over your head in the story if you do.
DBZ: Kakarot is one of those where I've gotten into it much more than usual lately. Not content with just the Platinum trophy, I'm doing everything: All of the DLC, maxing out my characters, and 100%ing the Z-Encyclopedia. Haven't felt like doing that in a game for a while lately.
The Yakuza/Like A Dragon/Judgment series is as much an Action RPG series as Tales or Star Ocean. Literally the only differences are that you only control a single character (with very occasional guests) and that you fight with your fists. The games all have leveling, inventory, sidequests, stats, health and mana (called Heat), learnable skills, random battles/wandering enemies, and a focus on storytelling I will die on this hill
I think you should branch out to indie and western RPGs otherwise a lot of your videos will start to feel alike because your covering some RPGs multiple times in multiple videos.
Persona 3 Reload is censored so I won't support it on principle, it definitely isn't perfect. It also doesn't include Persona 3 Portable's content, not even as DLC.
It’s the frequency. Eric’s always made good content, but as an actual professional content creator, he didn’t think about frequency. He had access to a huge library of games to add to people’s backlog, but he didn’t consider that at some point, you simply run out of games on older platforms. While we all enjoyed his 3x a week videos, it would have been wise to readjust to 1x a week early on. Aside from that, he needs to think of new video formats and structures. He has a good cadence, he just needs to freshen up. He needs to work a little bit on his ability to provide analysis, which would enable him to branch out into other series aside from TOP TEN UNDERRATED RPGS. Whether that’s comparing specific game mechanics’ evolution between games or generations, providing detailed game writing insight (considering he’s a writer), etc - he just needs a new thing that’ll keep the wheels spinning, while not rehashing.
