We tried out a thermacell for the first time and not impressed with it at all. You are right about needing perfect conditions for it to reduce the amount of mosquitos.. seen so many reviews that say its great but maybe they got them for free. I appreciate your honest review. How many of us enjoy the outdoors in perfect conditions

Thank you for this feedback. I argue with people in the comments all the time about whether this works or not. It seems when we buy it we don't want to admit we've made a mistake.

It's the exact same chemical as the mosquito coils/sticks, but I think the concentration is slightly higher in the thermocell, and the same concept as the coils, just more portable. Great tests, but I'm not convinced enough to buy one. Maybe if you got several and set them up around your camp or one in a hunting blind or something like that. But at the end of the day it's a "hi-tech" version of mosquito coils/sticks. Which also begs the question why butane... they could have gone with heating coils in the unit similar to what is in vape modules... guess it's just so they can make a little more money by selling you the butane refills...

The thermacell i got works wonders in the woods of Scandinavia, i've been using it for like 30-40 butane canisters now and i don't go into treks without it anymore even though i want to travel as light as possible because of the distances i walk, it's that important to me personally because it works so well for me where i want it to work. However; i only use it when stationary over a longer period of time, like when i am fishing for a longer duration or at my camp location to let the radius build up over time, it doesn't work so well on the go, in the wind or in temporary stops.
It works well for me for where and when i expect it to perform,, i would recommend it based on that.
If you live in a windy place however i would not recommend it since the slight smoke just blow out of the zone you're trying to de-bug, just use some plain ol' jungle oil, mosquito lotion or spray for that to ensure you don't appeal to them on the go.
Now, the actual advantage with the thermacell i find that makes me use it instead of creams and oils is in the afternoon-> night i can clean myself in a river or lake at night, go back to my camp location and don't have to oil myself up or spray myself into a icky mess or cover myself in a bug net before sitting down and taking it easy for a while and enjoying the view and sounds of nature before clean and dry crawling down into my sleeping bag or wait for the bugs to go away.
As for perspective , i am not a car camper, i go by train to my start location and do week-long treks in the north of Sweden, Norway and Finland then go back home the same way most of the time.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on the product, i was curious what other people thought about it and found this to be a good and genuine opinion on these kind of products.

Hello from Finland. Thermacell works here. I don,'t use it because it can kill dogs. It poison. Thermacell is too expensive to use, euro/hour. I use mosquito smokes or spray. But spray can cause damage to clothes.

I appreciate the effort you went in to testing this product, although I’m not all the way convinced you used it in its intended setting. The package itself states that it can be used for camping, fishing, hunting, backyard, or DIY which seems to imply that its intended use is in a stationary environment. I found brand new one of these at my local dump’s free table with some refills included so I have an opportunity to test it out myself while camping.

By far the best review I've ever seen. I'm 35 and prepping for my first camping trip in August. Over the past several years my reaction to mosquito bites has worsened significantly - changing from small circular annoying bites to 1+" firey welts. As a gardener w/ a house by the river, I've found that a mixture of coconut oil & tea tree oil, applied all over (even under clothes) protects me for a couple of hours - even better than Off which I had to apply every 20 mins. I get that not everyone's skin may tolerate or benefit from a liberal amount of oil but it helps me tremendously and leaves my skin soft. I may try the Thermacell to serve as backup while gardening or in the backyard relaxing, but I'm going to invest in one of those bug jackets for any woodsy excursions that require hiking while mosquitos are out and stick to topical applications as you suggested.

Thermocells work well for us, even in somewhat "breezy" conditions. In light wind, we just set the thermocell up wind from us. If the wind is blowing to hard for the thermo to work, it's normally blowing the skeeters away. I will admit that I have never tried it with the type of infestation you were experiencing ; ) Great job and thanks for taking one for the team!!

I'm not a backpacker but very much an outdoors woods guy. I have had some luck with the Thermacell based on conditions. My go to is Repel brand Lemon Eucalyptus. One thing I have found out after spending over 50 years in the woods is don't spray the repellent on your skin directly. Spray it on your hand and rub it into you skin. I works much better and longer that way. Enjoyed your video very much, thank you.

Excellent review! This is what makes your videos so special Jeep and why we trust your reviews. Way to take one for the team! I've been a trout fisherman, backpacker, and camper for over fifty years and the best protection comes from repellent applied directly to your skin and clothes. Sitting by the campfire early in the evening during the "mosquito hour" green break ferns tossed on the fire to make a smudge works well, if you can stand the smoke. Take care, Ossie

Holy cow, that's some serious mosquitoes.
I feel as though you should get paid to do this particular review.
I'm surprised that lemon-eucalyptus works so well. THAT was very helpful! I'm always shy about using too much picaridin and I avoid DEET. I am sparing about permethrin in the Summer when I wear a single layer of clothing.
But I wouldn't feel bashful about going wild with botanical spray.

Excellent demonstration and discussion. You covered much more than I expected. I was kind of wishing that stuff would work. Guess it's back to the chemicals and bug nets like you said. I've been using with Sawyer Picaridin repellent lately. So far it seems to work as well as the DEET. I like that there is no worries of melting plastic gear, eye glasses, and skin like the DEET will do.. Oh and by the way. I mentioned previously that the mosquitoes are bad here on the coast. Yours are apparently still much worse. I'm still itching from watching you. Hope you had some After-bite or something.. :-)

saradreaming We were out for an overnight in a prime mosquito area a few weekends back. You could not take the bug jacket off your head to eat. I would drink water right through the screen to avoid letting them get at my head. So I decided to order the Sawyer clothing gear and tent spray with Permethrin from Amazon. They don`t sell it up here. I have treated one outfit so far and am hoping to get out this weekend and see if it works better. I am even more hopeful now that I know you have tried it.

This was an excellent review. I have a ThermaCell unit and your review is spot on with what I've observed. It definitely works to some degree and will help reduce massive swarms around you in light wind conditions. The problem most people aren't aware of is the ThermaCell does not stay lit in high elevations. Mine usually stays lit at elevations to 8,000' and is useless/frustrating at higher elevations. The ThermaCell manufacturer is aware of this problem, but they do not mention it in the product labeling. Deet containing repellant lotions work best when you're not worried about scent while hunting. Buyer beware!

Great Review!! I have TWO Thermacells and using them BOTH at the same time has proven to be only moderately effective. I have "retired" them and gone back to (VERY effective) DEET Lotion. I liked your review.
Last year I was in the Danube Delta for 3 days and at 8 pm the mosquitos would come out for about 3 hours...We were in a bug tent and had those coils. We also used a few different brands of mosquito repellant creams...nothing worked.
I will try to see if I can get the OFF Botanicals that you showed here.
That situation was the only one where mosquitos were as bad as seen in your clips. Usually in the woods I would have a few around me..not like you had... And I will get bitten 1-2 every 5-10 minutes... In the Delta it was a bit worse than your camera picked up.
A nice trick that locals swear by and really works: Moonshine! Not on your skin, but taken internally.

      @EconoChallenge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

SpartanJohns One year a buddy of mine that comes on the Econo Challenge tried eating raw garlic for three days before the trip. He was eating cloves two and three at a time at meals. The only thing he kept away was the rest of the group. Another year one of us tried vitamin B with similar disastrous results. I tried a home recipe for a repellent based in the yarrow plant and got sick from all the bites I received. I am betting the moonshine helps them not feel all the bites they are getting LOL. At least it would have other fun effects.

I did some research and the active ingredient is allethrin, which is the same thing as Black Flag flying insect fogger that is used with heat as well. Rather than being a repellant, it's an insecticide (that supposedly isn't harmful to humans). Because you have so many mosquitoes, it is probably taking much longer to kill all of them that fly in from beyond the 15 feet perimeter and that's why it's taking so long to work.

As a kid I remember watching "PIC" coil smoke waft up to the ceiling in our tent trailer and then watching the mosquitoes fall to the floor and table. I would not burn that stuff inside now as I don't think it was a good idea to breath in that smoke. You needed to reach a certain density of smoke inside before they started dying. I really don't think you can achieve the same affect in the outdoors.

Excellent and honest review Jeep, please if you could, follow it up with a further review using Picaridin and Permethrin and it would make it all the more complete.
I'm in Ontario, and this year is shaping up to be a particularly bad year for the Black Legged Tick (Lyme disease) and a heavy year for mosquitoes as well. A review of those two products would undoubtedly be a very welcomed addition for your viewers.

I hope that continues.

I commend you for taking the time to do this review on this product but, if I could make an observation and a recommendation.
In your review you went into the woods before activating the protection. When you activated the protection you were covered in mosquitoes.
In a real life scenario without the protection of screens any normal person would have turned on the protection on as soon as they got the first bite.
Mosquitoes are attracted to your breathing and they collected on you as you entered the forest. If you were not breathing very few mosquitoes would have followed you.
That's my observation, my recommendation is to turn on the protection immediately. At first bite.
The light up sticks under normal situations are lit in advance to clear a area. as long as mosquitoes are following your breath (carbon dioxide) trail it is not a valid test. Even if you put protection in a area and then go to that area if the mosquitoes are flowing you the test is invalid. Or at least not complete.
If you could do a part 3 with my suggested parameters I would greatly appreciate it because I do not have the capability to do the test and you clearly do.
I have no idea if any of the products you introduced can do what they say but because I live in a area of almost year around Mosquitoes I'd like to know.
    Again I commend for posting.

Thanks for working so hard in presenting this review and keeping it real. I have one of the thermacell units and it works great inside a two man hunting blind. A little strong but man you can see those mosquitoes exiting quick. I also like it in my work shop on those days I don't run the AC and keep the door open. The little pests stop at the door. So there are places for which the unit serves a purpose but you are correct in saying they don't work well whenever there is wind that disperses the "goodies" coming from those flavor packets.

Jeep thanks for going through all that effort to test these products out. It's really depressing that none of them seem to work. I recently read that Sawyer's Fisherman's Friend is the best insect repellant bu I haven't tried it yet. I used to use repellants that had lots of Deet in them but they always made me feel vaguely ill for some reason. I tried a repellant called Herbal Armor and I have to say that I'm surprised at how well it worked. Last year I started spraying my clothing with paramethrin which works amazingly well at keeping insects away you and your clothing but is banned in Canada.

Thank you for this Thermocell honest review. I’d just purchased one, on our son’s recommendation, because I am an Extremely allergic and Very susceptible to those darn pests! I’ve got scars all over my body due to infections from their bites! I HATE them! I also purchased that “skeeter” net all over coveralls. I am a gardener so I’m our in garden often and every time I am bit to pieces! I would handle it if it were just taking some blood, but the bites Intense Itching is what I cannot deal with. I take Aveeno baths after gardening but it’s only temporary solution, so I use multiple backups to control the itching. It drives me absolutely Insane, the Itches! Anyway, now I know that the ThermoCell is not fool proof but better than without, as you’ve demonstrated. So, thank you. Look forward to more videos from you on your channel. Yes. While my conditions are not identical to yours, I live on 12 wooded acres bordered by a river. The mosquitoes are normally pretty bad but after a pretty wet week with a lot of standing water in the area they’re exceptionally bad now. I just purchased a Thermacell based on the recommendation of a co-worker and had a pile of logs to split in my pole barn so figured now was as good a time as any to try it out. I assure you I have no stock in the product or vested interest of any kind, but I experienced a significant difference when comparing the savage attack I endured while setting it up to returning about 20 minutes to a half hour later to start splitting logs. Fortunately for me, I read several reviews on Amazon and comments on TH-cam suggesting that the device works best when laying horizontally with the grill facing upward. It doesn’t appear to be designed to be operated while being held upright or clipped onto a belt while hiking. However, I wouldn’t have known that by reading the instructions that accompanied the product. This might be why it seemed to perform better on your second review, because it looked to me like you were operating it upright the first time but had it laying flat on a rock the second time. While I'll acknowledge that the pictures on the package depict the device laying flat by the people utilizing it, I read through the literature a couple of times and examined the packaging, specifically looking for this, and didn’t see that anywhere. Something that the manufacturer might want to consider including. as this appears to make a difference. Personally, while I wasn't expecting a complete 100% eradication, the Thermacell produced a big enough mosquito reduction in my open barn to be worth the $22 I spent on it.

    • @EconoChallenge
      @EconoChallenge  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Just out of curiosity how closed in is your pole barn? In other words how well does it provide you shelter from a breeze? I think I am detecting a trend in these comments that leads me to believe that semi-closed in areas are where this product seems to impress people the most.

I own a thermacell... bought it last week.in Haliburton Ont... the mosquito here are voracious... the size of small birds lol... but I turn my thermacell on and in 10 minutes... almost gone... I refill my butane cartridges by removing the check valve and I recharge my pads by soaking them in spider ban (permethrin .20%) ... it has worked amazingly for me. compared to the refills it is pennies on the dollar... this thing has been a god send. Sitting out in the bush around a campfire, very lucky if I hear one buzzing my head, without it... can't stay outside at all.... it actually works better if there is a very slight breeze... sit down wind... works best when lying down rather than standing up...
