I actually cant tell you how grateful i am for this video. I was almost on the verge of throwing in the towel bc i couldnt find a single helpful answer on this and then i found this link on your comment on reddit. thank you so much
Love your videos and how you get to the point. Great vid, keep em coming! I'm so confused about IK, bones, wiggling and all that crap. That, and the Sculpt tools, are the big features I'm lacking.
I actually made my own character and built a custom rig from scratch. I'm using Blender as my main software for animation in my Senior year animation class. I will definitely use this Pose Library for my animation workflow, great video! Only thing I am wondering and will be testing out is if the saved poses is transferable between different saved Blender files, if I can simply copy and paste the character into a Blender scene with backgrounds, for example. Just basically transferring data over.
@@nelkitoo Update: So, I can't seem to easily transfer data to other Blender files easily. The solution I found is to have two different blender files open, then I copy/paste the model in another file, and then I copy/paste the pose into another file. It's not the perfect solution since I would like to sync up the data to be updatable in different Blender files, but this is the best I can do currently. I have different Blender files for different shots of the film that's rendered and then I piece together the shots into one film in Premiere Pro.
@@paolaanimator I may be misunderstanding the point of the question here, but if somebody wants to access any kind of data from a different blender file, they can use Append of Link to do that. For example, if I want some action data from my rig file (or another animation file), e.g. a mouth shape pose, I click Link > select the file > select the Actions folder > select the mouth pose action line that I want and it is linked into my file ready for use. I also use the asset library files paths method to link over entire pose libraries from other files. You can do this by going to Edit > Preferences > Files Paths > then choose the folder that contains the blend file that contains your pose library (or your 'blender_assets.cats' file). That should import all the poses you have previously saved in the other file. I hope that helps anyone who is stuck.
@@paolaanimator I know you were asking about this a while ago, but I think Blender's intended solution is 1) mark the poses as assets 2) save the poses to a separate file, and include it in ->preferences ->file paths ->asset libraries directory, then 3) an asset browser opened in any workspace should include those poses

Hi, thanks. For soem reason my models poses are not saving.I select the bones I want to pose, pose them then key it. and I select both keys and bones. It seems to save the "armarue, and camera shot. but it delete my entire animations, I already did. meaning, I already had the rigg posed in a few way down the timeline. It wipes that all out and .. well its not working on only the Hand for instance. I cant make a hand pose, and Save pose ( only those bones and key)
In 3.6 I imported a Mixamo T pose model, none of the stuff shows up when I'm in pose mode such as the library and the save pose button to save a pose to a library. I'm sure I'm missing something can someone help?
If anyone feel very novice about this, like me, start with stances and select every single bone before creating the asset. Obviously what CG Essentials does is better but the assets are not going to work if you don't have the right/modified bone selected before clicking create asset.
Thank you for yet another great tutorial! I have the following issue: My thumbnails appear as in "solid" viewport shading style (i.e. no materials/colors). I have noticed that your model's colors show even though you're in solid viewport display mode. I don't know how you did that. I do know that thumbnails are created using the Workbench engine, but changing the color settings in there didn't change the thumbnail either. If you can help me create thumbnails with colors in them, that would be very kind and helpful on your part. If you can't, no problem, I am already grateful for your amazing and useful content :)
I also have this issue, not the end of the world, but the colourful poses in his video look a lot nicer! Also a lot easier to see what the pose looks like in a small thumbnail when everything isnt grey
@@linden1763 True, it's not the end of the world. I'm just using the "Random" setting in Workbench for now, it makes things a bit more discernible. Justin is probably using some script to create the thumbnails in all their colorful glory :)
Bro i found the answer, go to material properties -> pick any active material -> scroll down until you see "viewport display" section -> change the color exactly like the active material. and thats it.
How do I get my pose library to look like yours with thr thumbnails and everything? Mine looks really primitive and just shows big empty boxes with the name of the mesh itself.
Very useful tutorial! I do have one question though. You know how this is your "current fiile," and there's an option to switch to a shared asset library? I want the poses that I've made to be accessible in other projects, and I'm wondering how to move them over. Do I have to do that one by one? I've gone into the blender assets file and copy/pasted the lines into it, but those poses don't appear in blender. The catalog is there but it's empty.
im using an already rigged model but in the tool tab to the right pose library isnt available even tho ive enabled it in prefrences is there a short cut to hit to save my pose?
I’m trying to learn blender, but can’t import the rain v2 rig. I don’t know how to, there are no videos, and I need somebody to help me figure out how to do that so I can go to the next step. Help?
So I got a couple questions, 1. can saving poses have added geometry? Like theres a empty hand pose and a pose with the same hand holding an apple? 2. Can I use this to go back to a t pose. basically reset my character. If I can is there any down side to doing it this way? 3.Say I create a can and I save a pose with art on it and save a pose with no art onit. Can I use the pose with no art as a template so I can then use a different piece of in place of the original? And if I can, does then the can with the alternative art have its own pose library or does it share the originals library?
No poses show up in my Pose Library. No poses in the Asset Browser either. Pose Library is empty. I'm using version 3.5, I've got a Mixamo rig selected, and I've selected the armature. I don't get it!
Quick question, I'm just getting into posing my character. In the Pose Library you can create a collection of hand mevements, a collection of leg movements, a collection of eye movements etc. I'm just wondering if this system allows you to mix poses together. Can you create a group of leg poses and then mix them with hand poses for example? Let's say you want to put the arms in a perfect T-pose, but can it then cycle through a bunch of different leg positions without Blender interpolating the arms at all.
Love this video: super informative! Quick question: I'm trying to apply my poses to my character, but nothing moves. Any reason why this might be happening? Edit: I also have controllers I'm using to pose my bones
Not really sure why they thought they were ready to implement a new pos lib. They added thumbnails and blending. Thumbnails are good, minor but good, but blending should be a part of the graph editor. Meanwhile, they've locked themselves into a weird structure for poses. Poses are single-frame actions, and a pose library should be an *action* library, blended via existing NLA blends, but it's not, not the way they did it. Doesn't seem like a well-considered improvement to me, just a change for change's sake.
To have a pose accessible in the [ALL] category and not only the [CURRENT FILE] ( For some reason Blender asset browser won't let you) , you need to manually save the blend file into your blender asset folder for each pose you create. Yes, it sucks. Maybe, and i hope, i just don't understand this tool , because having to manage multiple blend files is just not useful at all and a total mess to work with. Every year i try to use the Pose Library thinking they must have fix it, but I always end up going back to using the GAOLIB addon, similar to Maya Studio Library, wich is by far more clean and easier to use.
This is very cool - I've been trying to get a good lip sync workflow and am wondering if there's a way to automate or trigger different poses based on an XML of lipsync data? What I've done so far is export the lip sync data from Adobe Animate, and it generates a list with data in this format ...it'd be easy enough to turn that into an edit list, so is there a way to use data in the format of {frame, pose#} to auto lip sync once all the mouth shape poses have been made?
Its blender 3.6 and the button to save the pose are missing .. repeat its missing ... idk why but the solution its go straight to assets library and enter // Asset // Creatte POSE ASSET use create shortcut
Awesome tutorial! Question...could I export a Pose Library I made for a character and move it into another scene/file? For example, I have a character in one file and I also have them Linked in another separate file. Could I take the Pose Library from that main file and move it to the file where the rig is Linked? Hope that makes sense.
Hi Justin. Does anyone know? That the Pose Library is empty in 3.6 and if you want to add you have to select the Rig > Pose Mode > Object Data Properties > Pose Library (Legacy) > Convert to Pose Assets but that option is missing, similarly in version 3.5.
