I felt the same as you with The Dead Romantics. It took me by surprise by how much I loved it. I was looking forward to The Seven Year Slip, but was disappointed with it about halfway thru because it felt a bit too sweet and the romance was too easy peasy. I stuck with it and found I loved it by the end. It really came around.
I still distinctly remember the first time i had to go shopping for food after losing my dad. The world was still spinning, people were shopping and going about their day snd i realised that my life had stopped and i was caught in the net of my grief and the moment my dad had died. It was such a shock to see that everything was just carrying on without him. The line from Funeral Blues by W H Auden - 'stop all the clocks' sums uphow i felt at the time. I have 'The Dead Romantics' so thank you for the information. I lost my brother last year so will give it a miss for now.

Look at those cars! those people! as if they did not ... I stopped before I finished my thought 'know'. They do not know, this death is your reality ...

It's funny because I was in the exact same situation with Daughter of Smoke and Bone a few years ago, where I'd read it but never continued so decided to reread and finally continue the series. I overall really enjoyed the trilogy and had similar thoughts about the first one so hopefully you'll also enjoy the rest of them! And once you get to the second book in the Strange the Dreamer duology, there's a little hint to something bigger between the two stories which I thought had some _interesting_ implications... I’m from NY and hand/finger tattoos are still very taboo in regards to gaining meaningful employment. As a hiring manager I didn’t mind, but my superiors said hard no’s to it. I hired a girl with full sleeve tattoos and hand tattoos anyway, but got a lot of flack for doing that, and I felt she had to “prove” herself more than her other colleagues to show her tattoos had nothing to do with her work performance. I don’t know what the culture is in the UK regarding this.
It depends on the industry in the UK, but it’s not uncommon to see people with hand tattoos and such here. It’s something I thought about but shouldnt be an issue for my work interests, especially with how minimal they are
