Great video! I really love the looseness, the freedom. The work hung on the walls is wonderful! I tend to think way too much and not sure how to turn my head off. Thank you for sharing your creative process.
I am so happy you found my video inspiring. I use Utrecht acrylic paints for all my paintings. I used to be an oil painter but when I began painting abstacts and switched to acrylics, I wanted a brand of paints that had the feel of oils. They are great paints and the heavy body consistency fits my painting techniques. I prefere to use gloves only because it is easier than scrubing my hands after every painting session. It was a little awkard at first but I quickly got used to it.
I’ve been trying and it’s so difficult and I will continue to try and you are right, it’s hard to begin because of the fear of failure. I keep failing and I will not quit. Thank you for this great video.
omg...hi Hines....i worked with you in Atlanta and have 2 of your small paintings i bought from you at Binders...COOL beans. i am living back in Florida and am an avid fine artist myself after many years...it is soooo cool to see you here. was looking up techniques and there you were! wonderful work..and YOU LOOK THE SAME! xo
RAMMSTEIN!! I am particularly fascinated with (aside from your great art, of course) your easel/mounting system. I have been searching for something to set my own canvases and panels on. Right now, I am using a custom-made three 2x3 system, but I am always looking for new and innovative ways to hold the canvases tightly, as I am a bit... aggressive with my painting. lol
Your paintings are just remarkable! I too was wondering how you get the paint to blend so well? I can blend my painting too, but I Usually get a more distressed look to them. I hope you can make a video on how to blend the colors so smooth soon.
Hi NolaGB, I am so happy you like my video. Regarding my brushes, I use only synthetic brushes with acrylic paints. I find that they release the paint and I get a longer stroke. Natural and brisle brushes are great for oil paints but for acrylic they tend to hold the paint and produce a shorter stroke.
hello Hines, I'm very big fan of you i love your all the paintings and the way you paint it's awesome, like you said it's an adventure to do abstract painting, i need few tips from you if don't mind which brush do you use and how to avoid the brush line while mixing the colors acrylic is very difficult medium to blend the colors please help and post a video of few tips about and blending colors while painting also how to avoid the brush lines , Thanks Hines
I keep coming back to your video. I hope you won't mind a question ... what kind of brush are you using? The way in which you're using it, sure tells me it's not like any I have. This is such a great video!
wow! You are so inspiring! I especially love how your colors never seem to "muddy" up! It's like even when you are painting to the music and in your "zone" you don't even have to "think" about what colors go with what. You are amazing! By the way, the music you were listening to "Rammstein" ..what song was it?
You are truly a dancerpainter - i love your style of painting - i am curious. I can see that you use Utrecht acrylic Healy body paints - but do you also play with any acrylic mediums - gloss, matt etc?
Thanks very much for the compliment. The approach I take to abstract painting is intuitive. My choice to paint abstracts was to be able to be more expressive and have a lot of fun while painting. The Rammstein song is Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen from the Herzeleid album.
I love your work! So inspirational! Are you using texture on your canvas before applying paint and if so what may I ask? I love how you change the composition throughout. I feel like I am constantly covering my work yet I'm never pleased with my outcome. Trying to work through my frustrations and your videos give me hope and inspiration!
This abstract painting took about 4 hours. I paint in acrylics so on a painting this large I do not have to wait for the paint to dry. When I return from painting one area of the painting another area is already dry. During the painting process I do a combination of wet on wet painting and blending as well as scumbling wet paint over dry painted areas.
You know...I really did not know how fast my hand moved while painting. After I saw this video I had to ask the gentleman who made it if he had sped up the movie. I was really surprised when he said it was all at normal speed. Part of the fun of doing these intuitive abstracts was the physical energy involved in the painting process.
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I will respond as soon as I get a chance with answers to your blending question. I also plan to make a video specifically about blending with acrylics. I have had others with the same problem. Thanks.
happy accidents?...the happy painter for abstract art...neh! Great to get people to just start and find what they like to make of it..colour...so on... pleasant presentation...and well done...great
Valeria, the style of work in this video utilized texturizing the canvas prior to painting. They were purposely completed in 2 to 8 hours. Sometimes longer but never more than two days of studio work. They did not have a build up of paint layers that happens with reworking a canvas over a long period of time. To be honest the basic reason for this was my short attention span and lack of patience. I was going for an immediate intuitve painting experience with abstraction.
Okay, back to my studio tomorrow to try the larger canvas. I'm used to working in water soluble oils, so you have to work hella fast to go with acrylics. Nevertheless, Hines is a soul buddy. Thank you for sharing.
I use Utrechts Acrylic Artists colors only. The quality is great and I find their heavy body paints don't have that thin flat look that most acrylics typically have. The spray bottles I use have only water in them. I have one large bottle for full spraying and smaller one for fine misting. By controlling the amount of water I put in the paints I can control the viscosity and make them look and feel just like oil paintings. With the wonderful advantage that they dry faster.
Hi Patricia.. thanks for the compliments on my video. The textures for my paintings were made from a combination of Golden's light modeling paste, paper, extra coarse pumice stone paste and sometimes dried paint from my palette. I actually have recently moved away from texturizing my canvases. My new painting are painted on flat canvases with no textures at all. Go to my website and check them out.
I where gloves for two reasons. One, painting abstracts I get a lot of paint on my hands which makes cleaning up a long process. Second, acrylic paints (like oils) can be toxic. I love using cadmium colors which is toxic if it gets into your blood stream. The gloves in this video are new. My gloves are usually a splattered with paints.
yes, but i believe you don't even feel the physical energy when you're painting, you seem to be really connected with the painting, anyways, i loved how you traveled emotionally from the beginning of the painting to the end, and how your mind state affected everything. Good work!
Hello Hines, hope you are doing good, I'm waiting for your tips on blending colors of acrylic plz plz give me some sample tips videos in your free time. Thank you :)
Great video! I really love the looseness, the freedom. The work hung on the walls is wonderful! I tend to think way too much and not sure how to turn my head off. Thank you for sharing your creative process.
Screaming!!! It's like you crawled in my brain and walked me through my very own thought process!!!!! Woot Woot!!!
I just subscribed!!!

love this - and i found the statement of 'the canvas speaking' is so true. I start painting and wait for my canvas to tell me what direction to take.
I enjoy listening to your description and thought processes.
man I love watching this guy paint...so active in his brushstrokes
I’ve been trying and it’s so difficult and I will continue to try and you are right, it’s hard to begin because of the fear of failure. I keep failing and I will not quit. Thank you for this great video.
This is exactly my fantasy of painting! Right on!!!!!!~
Stunning creativity and painting. Thank you so much for sharing this video. It's nice to have such inspiration to help others wanting to learn more.
First time ever viewing you sir! Subscribed and ring that bell! Really loved the palette knife and paint application for texture variations!

Yes indeed, exploring and discovering your visual language is what makes it.
RAMMSTEIN!!

Making abstract art is very much like improvising - its so much joy
This guy makes me want to paint -- now!

Yes, while I am painting abstracts I almost immediately go into a zone that is focused on the dance between myself, the paints and the canvas.
theartisthines hi wonderfull way of working - being present in dialogue with the living now -

I love your paintings, I am new to abstract painting I'm having a hard time finding good paint to use any suggestions?.
Very nice!! I just came to your videos. Do you ever paint with both hands? It looks like you want to.
beautiful!

Watching you paint is a very erotic experience! Your work is very sophisticated and free. Great inspiration!
Gloves???

Hello Hines, hope you are doing good, I'm waiting for your tips on blending colors of acrylic plz plz give me some sample tips videos in your free time. Thank you :)
The textures would usually be a combination of paper, cotton gauze and Golden's Light Modeling Paste.
Awesome and inspiration brother! You need to listen to some Dio and see what happens! Forever \m/
