Done mine few weeks ago, I just clamped my coolant hoses from egr. I could say what did come out was from egr itself nothing more. I have a question, maybe you gonna do intake manifold cleaning? It would be very nice to get more information, before I try to do it myself.
Additional; what about the deposits on the 'swirl flaps' - cleaning those would also improve engine performance(?) I love my D5 but the soot at high mileage has put me off buying another.
well the swirl flaps are for - well swirling the air - and making the combustion more efficient, if they stuck open or closed, it will have bad performance. The Actuator arm isnt there for decoration, it opens the swirl flap and closes it when necessary to maintain best airflow possible, the arm itself is a problematic construction, so is the flap design itself. If you have time id try to clean them if the EGR mixer plenum thing is dirty, so u know the flaps will be as well
That mixer plenum was very clean! Whenever I've removed mine it's been caked in oily crap. I've been thinking of blanking the EGR off & swapping the plenum for a straight through ali pipe, is this something you've ever thought about doing? How often would you say that the EGR needs cleaning? Also I found petrol was the best thing to clean this sort of gunk off.
I think the mixer was clean because the EGR valve itself was stuck closed so very little exhaust gasses had made it through for a while. I have seen them as you describe and worse though. Personally I would never blank or bypass the EGR and now that it's clean and working correctly, the engine has never run better. I would guess that this style of EGR system needs a thorough cleaning and testing like in the video only every 10-12 years. Cleaning the mixer plenum is probably a quarter of the job at best.
Hi Robb, ive had the egr delete done not too long ago. Its a costly thing to deal with when buying the car from someone else who wasnt really maintaining it well. Would unplugging it, since its electronically activated, end the egr functionality and prevent gasses/fumes from entering the engine or does it need to be blocked off physically at the pipe too?
The EGR valve cooler has a small permanent bypass which allows flow so if you want no flow, you need to fix a total blanking plate at the mixer plenum up front. Search D5 blanking plate online. Fitting this plate would cause a warning on my car but if your egr software delete is successful, it won't be looking for any flow so you'll get no warning lights.
@@sirobb wow this was a swift response. They're not strict the emissions and so it's easy to blank it off and get away with it. I wouldn't do this if the former owner took good care. Right now I'm dealing with some harsh gear changes, particularly between 3 and 4 or at times 2-3. When the engines not yet running hot, changes are more smoother. But it plays up when you're flooring the pedal or once it's running hot. I'm suspecting to be related to an incorrect atf level or solenoids needs cleaning and demagnetizing, if I can find someone who does it. Or replace the valve body if it comes to that. Unless it's the torque converter which might also be an issue.

I was thinking just making a custom "gasket" and placing it between the cooler and the intake connector metal tube (keeping the EGR running, just with nowhere to go). Will it cause any issues?
so im set to do this on mine soon, bought a blank from a seller from poland on Ebay. I've been told you'll end up with a EGR code but it will still run sound (from what i've been told) unless you can get someone to code out the EGR from the system.
@@Jayv70 Heyyy, soo, in that month, a lot has happened... You dont have to worry about just making a sheet metal insert with some liquid gasket and plucking in between the intake and the cooler (worked for me with no issues). I also dont own a Volvo anymore... Totalled :D
@@PartyManCZ fuckkkkk :'(((( sorry to hear that man

Question not related to video but cry for help
Volvo xc70 2003 2.5 awd automatic
Upon accelerating there is sound of whistling and reaching 2500 rpm vehicle goes into Limp mode if driven and reaching 110 km/h car removes fault and its like nothing happened.
Or when limp mode kicks in stop restart engine and vehicle works fine with slight whistle upon accelerating yet with out limp mode going active again until next time i switch it off.
I cant find faults and it is driving me and my vallet insane
Are you using Dice and Vida for the code read?
@@sirobb dice, yet i replaced preasure sensor problen stayed.
@@TermusJar When you have limp mode, do you get a warning on the dashboard?
@@sirobb check engine on left info screen (fuel consumption info tab) it stay there until vehicle restart or until i reach 110km/h where it resets and vehicle works as nothing is wrong.
I'm finding it hard to believe that you have a check engine dash warning and Vida can't find a stored code.
Vida catches the tiniest of errors in the vehicle management system.
Could this be the cause of intermittent power with a d5 xc90,
Unlikely but not impossible. There's a long list of possibilities for power loss.
@@sirobb thanks for the reply,I've gone over the vac system had the boost pipes and cooler pressure tested and plugged into vida and cannot find a thing
@@Carsandnature There's Vida explanations and live data in this video so have you done that?
@@sirobb I'll have a watch on my lunch break. Watched lots of your vids over the last few weeks. Going to a valve specialist tonight as I've done lots to try and find the issue but with no joy. I'll have a watch of this though thank you. And thank you for replying
@@Carsandnature There's a description in Vida as shown in the video that will tell you the data to look for and you just compare it.
Far be it for me to tell you how to spend your money but if you have Vida, you really don't need to pay a specialist to tell you if the valve is working as expected.
Hi Simon, I hope you are well? People are missing you on the forums. All the best mate.
Thanks Barry. I'm well thank you and hope you are too.
Just having a break from the forum after 8 years of contributions but I'm sure I'll be back at some point.
@@sirobb I'm good thanks. Enjoy the radio silence while it lasts! Have a good one
