  • This week it was time to build an oak door for my camper.
    i decided to go with a dutch door design because that is very practical for camping. the door also has a little look out window for my dog Smudo :)

    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    Would this door prevent gases from exiting a room? I'm looking to get rid of lice

    This is extremely enjoyable, watching the gradual progression and build out.
    Watching you use all the skills, hacks and experience you've learned over the years is really inspiring.
    ...Plus, that roll-out shelving unit is wicked!

    The split door became a thing after the “Duty on Lights and Windows” late 17th century, as it was classified as door, but could act as a window.

      The wiki article is interesting. Explains the whole bricked up windows as well to avoid the tax, ready to be reglazed when the tax went away. Some called it a tax on "light and air" which does make it sound even crazier.

      @@noremorsewoodworking2258 you're from the UK? In the US the terminology is a bit different. We call a thicknesser a plane, and a plane a jointer!

      The reason she glued the style to the piece of plywood is because it was twisted. Otherwise most of what she does leaves me scratching my head.

    This kind of door is called "Klönschnack-Tür" in northern Germany. Was build for old houses....so called "Friesenhaus".

      Or shorter a Klöntür a little further south. At least around here, the traditional way of building those seems to have mostly been a tilted cut rather than the additional strip of wood - obviously, either works just fine.

      You can do a similar technique with insulating foam and a circular saw: put the foam on the ground, your large sheet of ply on top and then make your blade barely deeper than the wood you're sawing.

    I think that there's something deeply philosophical about that "LET GLUE DRY" steel block. In projects like this (and most other things in life) you can't get decent results if you try to rush or force things. Sometimes you just have to wait for things to happen and events to unfold and plan around the things you can not affect or change.
    That said I hereby petition to have "LET GLUE DRY" t-shirts and stickers in Laura's shop and I definitely need a miniature version of that block as a paperweight for my desk.

    A little tip;
    When chiselling downwards, across the grain, grab the chisel handle with the thumb at the end of the chisel handle. (As if holding a staff)
    Then when you push down, use your shoulder to push, its more effective, and controllable.

    Getting along nicely there! With the risk of sounding like a negative person: looks good, but a few remarks/suggestions/pointers/concerns. The dowels you used are fine for indoor use, but not for exterior use, because they are made from beech. Better use oak or another outdoorsy type of wood. I know that that it won’t be exposed that much, but still a detail to follow up on over the years. If you want to do the sawdust trick: better apply the glue and then sand it in with a sanding paper. Adding the dust isn’t as effective ;-) And please be careful or stop using styrofoam or insulation foam as a backer for cutting all together. I know it’s super convenient and all.. But it’s so bad for your health and for the environment (it shoots micro-particles everywhere).

    • @johnmalt9921
      @johnmalt9921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sam Ponette - The styrofoam is fine. It’s not like she is sitting there huffing the particles. If you pay attention, you’ll notice very little is actually airborne. If you don’t like it, don’t do it, but don’t tell others what to do. It makes you sound like some whacked out, eco-fascist.

    • @christopherdahle9985
      @christopherdahle9985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given the care that is going into the design and construction of this camper, and especially its door, I expect both will far outlast most commercially produced ones. The real door is the horse ramp and it's going to be closed, latched, locked, and covering the oak door except on the occasions when Ms Kampf is actually camping. The abrasions of traffic and living are the factors that wear campers down. Few last beyond a decade unless they are stored under cover and rarely used. But beyond that the oak screen and main entry doors in my house remain sound after 90 years of continuous exposure to harsh alpine weather. When Ms Kampf scraps-out this camper in 2035, the door will be one of the parts that is salvaged for re-use.
      The fabrication of the arc template, together with the reuse of the styrofoam packing blocks to support the work piece while using the saber saw is both clever and efficient. While I agree that we need to reduce the environmental load of this ubiquitous waste material, otherwise headed directly to the dump, the notion that recycling it in this way is worse for the environment or general human health is a stretch. It unavoidably comes into our homes. Far better that we get at least some additional use out of it before sending it off (hopefully to be recycled) to the land fill.

    Laura, I liked how you used the hot glue gun. Especially when planing the warped board.

    What a beautiful door. Especially that you built it in one piece and then cut it in half is amazing

    Another interesting project Laura , out of interest, how did you get the SawStop sawbench ? did you buy a 240v version or an American machine and get it converted to EU norm? Keep these videos coming, I might eventually get to making a few myself, all the best Karl W

    Hi Laura, another great vid, in England we call that sort of door a Stable door as it allows the horse to stay in the stable but preventing the horse from escaping into the wild.
    Looking forward to your next instalment for your tiny home???.

      That's interesting. In the US, it would be a "dutch door". I don't know if that means "Dutch", or if it's a corruption of "Deutsch", or something else altogether.

    I didn't read the video description, I saw the video and excitedly clicked. When you laid your saw on it to cut it in half. I said to my computer screen "No! What are you doing?" Then it dawned on me, split door, cool idea.

    Whilst there is no doubt that Laura's skill set is superlative, what does concern me (& it's a feature of almost all her presentations), is the lack of protective eye & ear wear - the velocity of wood chips/sawdust coming off the workpiece is insanely high (& wearing a forward-facing peaked cap will only serve to trap those particles, richocheting into the orbital cavities) - I would not risk losing an eye for the sake of placing a pair of goggles/glasses over them. What is more ironic, is that (she) sports sunglassses - to protect those self same eyes from the sun's glare (UV output). For someone so incredibly brilliant, the ever-present dangers appear to relegate that intelligence to 'low'. It's flirting with disaster.

    The trick you used to cut the curved part of the door with a small piece of wood was really nice. I am looking forward to seeing the camper progress every week.

    But wait, why rip wide stock and then glue up a wide piece? And I didn't quite follow the hot glue lam on the plywood. Can you explain what that was for? Great video tho and the background music was a perfect soundtrack to the vid.

    What happened to your jointer planer? I first started watching your channel because you surfaced boards faces on your jointer. Many people don't know how to take cups and twists out of a board with a jointer. I am still wondering where you got your woodworking skills.

    Weird that she has a $3k table saw but no jointer. That is a neat trick she did with her planer to essentially joint it and get it flat but why not spend the money to get the right tool and do it properly. If you're going to do that level of carpentry you should have as good a jointer and planer as you do table saw. She's using a simple Ridgid planer. Ridgid sells a good inexpensive jointer as well at Home Depot for $700.

    too bad the domino 500 has only 25mm length. 10mm width domino could be longer. I make my own 10mm floating tenons with a router and a cmt carbide spiral bit, so my hardwood homemade dominos can be 32mm length, wich is ok for 10mm width
