Beat Saber has a "mirror" mod but it's simply called "Left Handed mode" in the settings. It flips all the notes so that left handed people can use their dominant hand on right hand heavy sections
Yeah with beat saber it's interesting because some people are significantly weaker on their non dominant hand. In some cases some of my scores have had a full point difference between hands which translates to about .89% acc difference even when the map has a good balance.
I thought mirror mods were just a 'for fun' thing at first but this makes sense! I do digital art and a pretty common piece of advice is to flip your art horizontally every once in a while to see if anything is off or get a new perspective on it. Makes sense that this would apply to rhythm games too!
No joke, there are a couple songs I do this for because I can't hit the patterns comfortably the normal way haha. Jacks on my right hand are way more comfortable than on my left.
Clone Hero has both, and there’s actually a crucial difference! Lefty flip assumes you’re holding the guitar on the other side, making lower frets go on the right and higher frets on the left. Mirror mode, on the other hand, treats the fret order the same as usual, and just pretends the notes are high instead of low and vice versa. (You can even use mirror and lefty mode simultaneously, and they don’t cancel out!) This mostly comes into play in terms of note sequences - if you need to play green followed by red, whether you’re a righty or a lefty, you can do that by holding green throughout, and adding red. But with mirror mode enabled, you can’t continue to hold orange while playing the blue note! Anyway, hope this was informative to someone, at least :)
Another game that benefits a ton from mirror is ONGEKI, since a non mirrored chart would force left handed players to use their non-dominant hand on the buttons rather than the lever on higher difficulty charts. While you are moving your hands around the cabinet quite a bit, most charts are designed for right handed players and will favor that side of the cab for more technical sections
Beat saber kind of does have mirror, you just have to turn on the left handed setting. But I can't blame you for not knowing that, I only recently found out about the left handed setting.
I can't imagine people can actually think that mirror is "unethical". How will they think about high-level IIDX players where probably 90% of them use random by default?
mirror is actually effective due to how people read certain stuff. Usually people read in the same way their language is written (left to right, or right to left). You won't notice it but new osu mappers tend to put their first objects on the top left/right of their screen because they're used to reading that way. Older mappers already notice this bias that's why they can start randomly. In my personal experience, there's a bigger chance of me missing a certain note on something familiar than the ones I sightread (since I correspond certain notes in a song with the objects). So, to counter this, I change skins often and play songs with audio and no audio. Though I still miss (because I'm inherently a bad player), it does make a difference in reading.
5:30 Beat Saber actually DOES have a mirror mod but it goes by the weird name of Left Handed Mode. Nobody uses it due to the game's mechanics and charters' bias towards right handed streams, most people are used to using their right hand to keep timing when hitting streams and have trouble doing so with their left.
Not exactly true. A lot of players will use Left-Handed mode to be able to handle both left-handed and right-handed streams equally, since we've seen more and more ranked maps with left-handed streams implemented.
@@defunct0sjlkf984 I can't think of any good ones off the top of my head, but Night Raid With a Dragon has some left handed bursts thrown in. It's mainly higher-level stuff (like 9+*).
I use mirror all the time when playing o!m, it's became a habit for me where i would perform bad without mirror even though the chart doesn't have a left/right hand bias.
Same, I usually only do that the maps I've played already though especially on maps I've played a lot. Also, I played with you yesterday lol the coincidence wtf
for ITG tech mirror is a bit weirder and can actually cause some charts to be a bit harder, since doing "footswitches" (technique where two feet hit the same panel one after another) is easier on the down arrow than the up arrow for most players, and a lot of tech charts are biased towards down arrow footswitches because of this - so mirroring would cause footswitch heavy charts to be mostly on up and potentially be harder
A couple notes: 1) I’m surprised you mentioned mirror in PIU and not DDR, since I personally have literally never seen anyone use mirror for anything more than a joke, and it’s so stupidly common in DDR 2) while I agree with your points that it isn’t a major change in a chart, my argument for why I don’t use it is that I want to play the original chart how it was created, and not with any changes to it, even if it’s something simple like mirror
Beatsaber mirror mode is called "Left handed mode" since beatsaber mapping practice starts most streams with the right hand and has more right hand overall it makes since to add this for lefties.
In IIDX and BMS we're allowed to use random, and I think that for those games it makes sense random on 7k might seem trivial, but iidx and bms have something unique to them: the scratch, and the charting style Due to this, you're hitting patterns in a ton of different hand positions, like taka.s for scratch sections, and 1048 for the rest. Random allows you to get better at the game much quicker by exposing you to weird chords, kick drums that aren't on 1, and awkward scratch chords, sure it might make some few charts objectively easier, but everyone has decided that it really *shouldn't* make most charts harder, you just need to improve as a player and learn to hit the weird stuff
It's useful in DDR for me as it turns crossovers into crossunders which I'm far better at. Songs such as Paranoia Respect is something I'll always use mirror on.
What about Turn mods in DDR? There has always been debate over whether or not scores are "legit" when using turn mods, since doing so can give you easier patterns even if the number of notes is still the same. Two examples being Paranoia Revolution CSP and Dead End (GROOVE RADAR Special).
I initially mentioned them in the rough draft of my video (and already have in my Konami video), but I took it out because DDR players just don't get it no matter how many times I say that turn mods outside of mirror shouldn't be rankable. Funnily enough, I used DEGRS as the example too.
So Persona 5 Dancing (and probably the other Persona dancing games) has a scoring system where by activating various modifiers that make the song harder or easier, you increase or decrease the final point multiplier. For some reason, the Mirror modifier counts as one of those modifiers that makes the song harder, and thus increases the multiplier slightly. So in this case, there is no reason *not* to use Mirror, since it gives you more points for doing something that barely affects the difficulty.
For mirror mod in Clone Hero, and to an extent Guitar Hero and Rock Band, wouldn't that be similar to lefty flip? Not sure how accurate that is to other mirror modes in other rhythm games, but I think it should've been brought up.
It's worth noting imo that the vertical mirroring in osu's hr mod makes aim more uncomfortable for a lot of maps. Pishi has an interesting video about it.
Paranoia Survivor Max Heavy was a great one to use mirror on. Up until the extended ending it’s literally a sped up Paranoia Survivor Heavy on mirror (well, the middle freeze has a slow down but it’s functionally no different). Since most people learned Paranoia Survivor before Paranoia Survivor Max you already had a lot of the muscle memory to get through 90% of the song if you just used mirror, although in my opinion it makes the ending notes after what was mirrored from Paranoia Survivor a lot harder but that’s just me.
honestly, the first three “mods” in groove coaster (follow, change & visible) are literally there to help you improve your score and get either a perfect or at least a full chain, but i feel as if the other ones (mirror, just, hidden, stealth, no way, etc.) are just there to challenge yourself bc in the end, the scoring system is the same but the play through is obviously way more difficult. they have a mirror mod but honestly that one in my opinion is just useless, since there’s never going to be more than one note per beat so the only thing that actually changes is the way that you’re going ,, idk i just always felt like they were useless and i’m glad that in waiwai party they’re there for unlimited use bc even tho i think they’re useless, they’re still really fun to play with.
Clone Hero has a more viable Mirror Mode that does not change the mechanics. Lefty Mode. Just reverse your controls and it's now a mirror mode with no mechanics changed
In Etterna, we rank the mirror mod unlike other notedata changing mods (withholding the possibility of implementing a system to calculate the rating for a specific permutation of notedata that isnt just mirror, good lord that would complicate so many things) because, since the calculator measures physical difficulty, a mirrored chart is physically the same overall. The hands are swapped and the direction of patterns are swapped, but cumulatively the chart would be the same difficulty. A perception of different difficulty from mirroring something would be the bias of the player. Just one point that I think was implicit, not directly stated
I stated that mirror doesn't change the overall difficulty of the chart. Perhaps, I should have said "at all", but I figured that part was implied. I also had a part in the video where I ridiculed other turn mods, but I ended up keeping it out of the video just to keep the focal point towards encouraging people to use the mirror mod.
as a mirror stan, I agree that this is not unethical since in the rhythm game Malody, you still feel the same difficulty just like having nomod Arcaea also has that but is practically...Pay 2 Play since the partner that you need for it to be unlocked, is money and a hint of playing at story mode now, borrowing an account in Arcaea is also a good solution, but it kinda has a downside that may happen... are you aware of dancing onigiri? it's a japanese browser html5/flash-based rhythm game that is hosted on a variety of different japanese websites and has a lot of different charts for 5k, 7k, even 11k and 23k, but the 5key mode is most common and functions similarly to a 4key game with a bms-like scratch there is a mirror mod in dancing onigiri, but for all intents and purposes they are considered to be different patterns from the original chart, so any mirror mod scores aren't saved - because of that 5th key or "scratch" it slightly alters the hand movements you'd normally use on a chart; however, there are also in-game options for changing the position of the scratch key, so that may not be applicable if e.g. you bind the scratch key/5th key to the spacebar and set it so that it is the middle lane idk just thought it was worth mentioning
I’m actually the opposite and prefer crossovers to unders. I’ve also used mirror to help with charts where I was leading into certain patterns with the wrong foot consistently.
I started to play taiko rencently (with the gimmick of only playing with sudden death) and i got to say that mirror mode should be in this because the number of files i'm mindblocking on is ridiculus. Just a mod that changes D to K and K to D, please ppy
on osu i just flip my screen upside down for when the jumps are focused on bottom right. i dont see the problem with it. a left handed player would find such things easy while a right handed would not. not to mention scoring does not factor in what side its on. simply how spaced, angled, and fast the notes are. and yes. its amazing how easy it removed mindblock. ive yet to hear a good argument to this logic. HR changes the map a bit more drastically so theyre not the same thing.
wow, what a great video,i use mirror mod on low star maps in osu mania, because it feels like the timing window is easier to hit,i might try it on higher star maps since it might make me better, even in etterna and ffr
Interesting that you'd mention CH/GH as a game where Mirror is unpractical but neglect to mention Lefty Flip, which would be very interesting to discuss and an example of a mirror-style mod as a tool of accessibility Overall nice video though, discusses the core functionalities of Mirror, why and for what it's useful, and why it's not "cheating" just because it's technically modifying the notes. You end up only scratching the surface of potentially very deep topics like mindblocking and note order alteration (via Random mods or the Left/Right mods in DDR) and I'd like to see future content on these
what if taiko had a mirror mod? would that be considered changing the game too much? i wonder if theres ever a situation in taiko where mirror would actually be useful
You could probably just reverse your controls and use a skin with opposite colors for a practical mirror mode. I don't think Taiko would be affected much if at all by mirror mode since all it does is swap which one is your dominant hand without altering how patterns are hit.
Lazer has a random mod in taiko. Imo this is actually really good for pattern practice even if it kind of removes the entire point of red/blue notes. tho there are some no-hitsound players so this can be nice i think.
I like using the mirror mode in taiko on the ps4 since there something called ranked mode where you can't change any of the song setting. So it allow me not having to worry about getting mindblock in ranked and improving my accuracy instead of having around the same accuracy when playing freeplay mode
Like how mirroring a guitar hero chart would make it harder, mirroring an osu map could also make it harder. Because of the way you move the pen, some areas are easier to hit than others. For a right handed person, moving diagonally from top-right to bottom-left is way easier than top-left to bottom-right, ad the former is a wrist movement and the latter is stretching and curling fingers.
You actually explain the reason why mirror mode should be a valid mode in your argument, the idea is that mirror mode can assist people who's dominant hand is the opposite (usually left handed people). When in those situations, a left handed person would be advantaged/disadvantaged over the majority of players and mirror mode would simply alleviate the unnecessary hand bias. It's very different for Guitar Hero in particular because the engine has anchoring mechanics, in short you can anchor lower notes while playing individual notes (chords excluded unless they are hammer-ons) and mirror mode drastically affect how the chart can be played based on what can and cannot be anchored. For the example at 4:45, in the normal chart you have a "blue wall" and "orange wall" in which you would be constantly switching up which fret you are anchoring, making it much more difficult to utilize both hands to hit the higher notes. On mirror mode, you simply anchor red/green and your entire focus is on hitting the top notes which is significantly easier.
@@AbyssionQC while it will even the playing field for left handed players, I imagine some farm maps will be noticably easier when mirrored or vice versa to the point where it wouldn't be used to avoid mind lock. I might be wrong tho
Mirror mod is a really cool feature and I love the idea of it to help us to train something. But what I disagree with the mirror mod, is that some people use mirror only in certain case ; here I talk about making only a few of your top play with mirror (I talk about osu!mania here). Like I said the concept of mirror is great but if it is use to make it easier for the person to do his top play ; well, I can't take that. For me in this case particularly it is cheating ; if your top plays aren't all with mirror ; they shouldn't be one there. Except the fact I talked about, mirror is just one of the best thing that can help to improve and I really love it.
I think some cases in DDR mirror or turn mods can be used to make songs easier and the scores are still accepted as valid. For instance, Reincarnation ESP in DDR has jacks on the up arrow. Mirror turns these into down arrows, which are inherently easier to perform jacks on. I've asked people using mirror on the song why they use it and they specifically tell me they do it because it's easier. Other songs that have a couple tricky crossovers but are otherwise not very difficult can be played on left or right to remove the challenging part of the song. Do you think the ethics of mirror you mention still apply in clear cut cases like these?
Yo, you need to check out Everhood, it is another popular game that mixes the mechanics of guitar hero notes and gameplay of undertale. Like bullet hell but as a rhythm game. Maybe do a review of it!

:thonk: what about a video similar to this, but talking about upscroll vs downscroll?
I had to flip my monitor and change to upscroll before osu!mania added mirror mod lol
I started to play taiko rencently (with the gimmick of only playing with sudden death) and i got to say that mirror mode should be in this because the number of files i'm mindblocking on is ridiculus.
Just a mod that changes D to K and K to D, please ppy
Interesting but if i cant even beat the orignal map then mirror just add more problem

yes video
on osu i just flip my screen upside down for when the jumps are focused on bottom right. i dont see the problem with it. a left handed player would find such things easy while a right handed would not. not to mention scoring does not factor in what side its on. simply how spaced, angled, and fast the notes are. and yes. its amazing how easy it removed mindblock. ive yet to hear a good argument to this logic. HR changes the map a bit more drastically so theyre not the same thing.
wow, what a great video,i use mirror mod on low star maps in osu mania, because it feels like the timing window is easier to hit,i might try it on higher star maps since it might make me better, even in etterna and ffr
just one question, how would i play guitar hero lll without the controller
Interesting that you'd mention CH/GH as a game where Mirror is unpractical but neglect to mention Lefty Flip, which would be very interesting to discuss and an example of a mirror-style mod as a tool of accessibility
Overall nice video though, discusses the core functionalities of Mirror, why and for what it's useful, and why it's not "cheating" just because it's technically modifying the notes.
5:08 my gameplay B)
Really wish they'd implement regular mirror in osu standard
how do i enable it
The mirror mode in pump it up is considerate a hard mode
And don't even say about RandomStep
Do you think the ethics of mirror you mention still apply in clear cut cases like these?
sigh, now i'm really wishing osu had this. hard rock is too much of a different beast for that to count
Can I get a video showing some love to Amplitude?
You've gotta check 'F.I.S.H.' on steam
Yo, you need to check out Everhood, it is another popular game that mixes the mechanics of guitar hero notes and gameplay of undertale. Like bullet hell but as a rhythm game. Maybe do a review of it!
