This is great! I am 79 with 2 metal hips, 1 metal knee and shoulder problems from tennis and other sports. I have had an attitude since birth that I can handle any situation, so I do not get excited about many situations and immediately think about a solution. When I fell I knew I would have to get on my knees. My metal knee never hurts. My God Given knee finds all kinds of reasons to hurt, so I knew there was going to be a lot of pain. But I knew it would not last and I had to get up. And there was a chair within a brief distance. And of course, with metal hips you have an area in which you cannot exceed the stretch. I am 4'10" so how much stretching can I do?!!!!! I was up in an instant. Pain is gone in a few minutes. As long as I am breathing and heart pumping, I expect my body to work for me. I think my attitude is what has gotten me so far, as well as my surgeon, Dr. Cope, and the inhouse rehabilitation group I use. They have known me for 30 years and they know I need to live like I want. I will soon be 80 and 12 years ago after retiring, I moved from the U.S. to South America and I live halfway up a volcano in a 4 level townhouse. Good Exercise! Could not be happier with my only wish being I should have done both knees. Metal parts do not hurt if you exercise. My doctor and hospital make you start exercising before surgery and suggest you continue forever.
I don't get it. You showed different ways to roll around on the floor and change body positions, but you never actually demonstrated getting up. What's the point?
Exactly. That's what I came to this video to find out. My mom is stuck on her hands and knees so how the hell do you get from your knees up to your feet if you don't have much strength!?
I am 81 and had a fall, which surprised me, I found that my legs had lost their strength, without me realizing it. I am being treated by a physiotherapist. I found that my problem, was lack of leg strength and severe lack of balance. The balance problem was neuropathy caused by my diabetes. Many old people have diabetes and that coupled with lack of leg strength, leads to a situation, where it is difficult to walk any distance. Iwas given two lots of exercise, one for balance and the other for strength of my legs. After four months of following these exercises, I am greatly improved. I believe that I need another two months of treatment and then to follow a regime of walking and balance exercises, to maintain the improvements that I have made. These exercises are easy to do and it is impossible to improve, without them.
I am 76 and because of spinal stenosis, diabetic legs and snapped tendons in my shoulders I fall easily. I have had several falls. I had one fall where I lay on the ground for two hours until my wife came home. I just do not have the physical strength to get myself up. Your video may help older people with fewer problems which is great.
I agree completely. This is one of my beefs with most anything that is geriatric focused. Rarely do they actually actually have somebody who is in that age bracket doing the damn exercise or technique.
My dad lived alone, he fell and couldn’t get up after 3 days long excruciating days on the floor he passed away 😢. Never got to say goodbye. 🥺 Remember to always check on your elderly parents, grandparents etc..
OHHH, SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT. YOUR POOR DAD. I HOPE HE IS FINE ON THE OTHER SIDE NOW. I THINK EVERYONE HAS TO KNOW HOW TO GET UP IF THEY TAKE A FALL. I CAN DO IT IF I HAVE A SOFT PILLOW NEAR BY OR IM ON A THICK MATTRESS OTHER WISE I DONT KNOW HOW ID GET UP. IT WOULD KILL MY KNEES TO TRY AND GET UP THAT WAY THE WAY THEY ARE NOW.
That's very sad. My sister who is 65 and myself age 70 have made a pact to text each early every morning to make sure we're alive and well. If we don't get a reply we will call local police to do a welfare check as we are not in the same city.
Please show this video of someone who has had a stroke or has arthritis especially of the knees or elbows and in considerable pain or deminished strength trying to get up off of the ground.
I am 80 years of age I am very disabled and fall easily. If I fall there is no way I can get up by myself. I have looked at a lot of this type of video, and they don't help. It may work for older people with some strength in their limbs. If you have widespread arthritis and stenosis of the spine, plus diabetic legs as I have the only way to get up is to have somebody near help you up. I have fallen and had to wait hours before I could get help. It's easy for a young person to pretend to be disabled and use your method. Try it when you are old and disabled.
What younger people never understand is that a lot of older people cannot use their knees to kneel on. We need a method of getting upright without using our knees. You should test them on proper older people before making a video.
EXACTLY, EXACTLY. GET OLD PPL LIKE US TO DO THE VIDEO. MAYBE I SHOULD DO A VIDEO OF HOW I GET UP FROM A REASONABLY THICK MATTRESS SUCH AS A 10 INCH THICK MATTRESS. I USE MY OWN TECHNIQUE AND IT DOESNT INVOLVE MY KNEES. IF I WAS TO TRY AND EXPLAIN IT I AM STILL A BIT DOUBLE JOINTED BUT I HAVE BAD KNEES. WHEN I WAS YOUNG I USED TO WORK OUT A LOT TO EXTREME AND I BELIEVE IT HAS DONE BAD THINGS TO MY KNEES OVER THE YEARS. I THINK THE MORE ACTIVE WE ARE WHEN WE WERE YOUNG THE WORSE WE ARE GOING TO SUFFER FROM IT IN OLD AGE. WHEN I AM SITTING ON A MATTRESS I GO BACK A LITTLE THEN I THROW MY WEIGHT INTO GOING FORWARD AND I HAVE MY HANDS ON THE FLOOR AND I PUSH MY WEIGHT UP QUICKLY. I THINK YOUD HAVE TO WATCH ME TO KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. PERHAPS IF MY FRIEND COMES TO VISIT ME ONE DAY AFTER XMAS SHE CAN FILM ME DOING IT AND THEN I WILL UPLOAD IT PERHAPS.
Thanks, that would work for a person who's joints and muscles are still functional. But is there a method for old people who can't use their knees anymore and their entire body lacks strength?
EXACTLY, I AM CLASSED AS ELDERLY NOW AS IVE JUST GONE PAST 70 AND MY KNEES ARE A BIG PROBLEM FOR ME. YOU CANT POSSIBLY PUSH YOURSELF UP BY PRESSING YOUR KNEES ON THE GROUND UNLESS THERE IS A SUPER SOFT SUPER THICK PILLOW THERE OTHER WISE THE PAIN WOULD BE EXCRUCIATING. I CAN GET IN AND OUT OF THE BATH OK AT PRESENT BECAUSE I HAVE A TALL BATH AND IM ABLE TO THROW MYSELF INTO A POSITION BY PUTTING MY HANDS ON THE RIMS OF THE BATH AND GETTING UP THAT WAY BUT WHEN IT COMES TO KNEES, NO WAY. I COULD GET UP FROM A NORMAL SIZED MATTRESS, NOT A THIN MATTRESS BY THROWING MYSELF FORWARDS WITH MY WEIGHT AND PUSHING MYSELF UP THAT WAY BUT YOU HAVE TO SIT BACK A BIT THEN THROW YOUR WEIGHT FORWARD AND QUICKLY PUSH YOURSELF UP THAT WAY. THINGS ARE VERY DIFFERENT WHEN WE ARE OLD, ESPECIALLY ONCE OUR KNEES GO ON US. I COULD NO LONGER RIDE A PUSH BIKE EITHER BECAUSE IT WOULD KILL MY KNEES TO DO SO AND ID SUFFER FOR WEEKS AFTER IT WITH PAIN.
🍀 what's sadder is (that you don't call your mother)! more than the actual falling on the floor! We have got to start honoring the elderly and our parents (more)! Shame on us!
@@ToddDouglasFox not really. My mom is no longer with us, but we would speak 2-3 a day! I never went "weeks" without calling her! I'm glad I was never too busy to call her!🌸
I have fallen 4 times in the last 2 weeks. It takes me about 30 minutes to get up only because I can scooch to my ottoman, put my elbows on it and then lift my hips and "walk" backward toward the ottoman. Then, I'm on my back on the ottoman and I can sit up from there. It's a whole ordeal. I get into that side-sitting position and get stuck. I can't lift my hips to get on my knees.
I have had both knees replaced so I can't get on my knees. I don't have the thigh strength to get myself up. I can't do either. I call my boys or the fire dept.
SORRY TO HEAR THAT, YES OLD AGE CAN BE THE PITS. AT LEAST YOU HAVE SOMEONE YOU CAN CALL TO HELP YOU UP SO THAT IS GOOD. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PHONE NEAR YOU.
I fell on the floor the other day and could not get up. I had a total kneed replacement in the past and the other knee is not much better. I was too far away from my phone to call a friend or 911. I may have cracked the new knee or at least bruised them up badly. I managed to get in a seated position. You are right about upper body strength. I need to work on that. I could not get on my knees. I had to drag myself on the floor to the nearest room (the bathroom) I had an urgent need 🙂. I ended up grabbing onto the bowl with great difficulties, I managed to lift myself off from the floor. I would have like to see alternative if you can't get on your knees. Thank you!

Here’s a great exercise… regularly practice getting down and up from the floor. Not only does it target the right muscles, but you relearn the skill that came so easily when we were kids.
Crawling on the knees is too painful. It's easier to crawl on the belly or roll to a chair. You have to come up with something better for old people. Especially for those waiting for or who have had knee surgery.
Please I have watched several videos, and no one addresses people with hip replacement and knee replacement I see you are working on a mat and that more than likely would not be the scenario if a person fell in the home or outside. How much twisting can a hip replacement take and how much weight can you put on a knee replacement. I have a replaced left hip and a right knee replacement!!!
Ironically you talk about people making fun of that commercial and you start this segment off by doing the exact same thing! Get out of anchor mode and try to be serious about this situation. And yes how about get somebody who's 75 to demonstrate!
Note if you wear shoes like Skechers Shoes with thick relatively inflexible soles and don’t have great muscle strength. I could not get up wearing those shoes which are slip on shoes. Looking for new footwear with sole that is thinner.
