Counter Strike's Knives Are Pay To Win | Here's Why

- In this video, we dive into a controversial topic within Counter-Strike - the impact of knife skins on gameplay. Recently, players have discovered that certain knives in CS2 cover less screen space than others, potentially giving players a competitive advantage. This raises questions about whether certain skins could be considered "pay-to-win."
We'll explore which knives are affected, how significant the difference in screen coverage is, and the implications for competitive gameplay. Additionally, we'll discuss the community's reactions to these findings and whether Valve, the game's developer, has responded to concerns about fairness.
Join us as we investigate this intriguing aspect of CS:GO and consider the broader implications for esports and game design. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share your thoughts in the comments below. Is this a valid concern or simply a minor detail blown out of proportion? Let's find out together!
☝🤓 erm actually you can change the amount of sceen space taken by you viewmodel in the console so this video is pointless
thank you for this comment. Videos like these happen when people over think too much.

dude, I fully agree. Recently, I sold my skins (broke college student), and after buying a cheap knife I liked, instantly started getting those awp 3Ks

Back in my day everyone wondered why Snax used the falchion knife. It turned out its deploy animation was faster than the other knifes. People started buying falchion knives then Valve patched it so all knives take the same amount of time to pull out

You CAN’T ignore the value of WHERE the space is being taken up on your screen too. Some knives like the falchion are taking up a lot of center screen real estate , while others like the karambit and daggers are more low and not centered.
Very true, I'm more of the opinion that peripheral space is more important. Think about when you have your knife out; you're running somewhere.
Last thing you want is a T camping in a corner waiting for your rotation, just out of view because he's being covered up by the weapon model.
This happened to me because I was rocking a bowie, which sparked my idea for the video!
I think we should also consider the "importance" of the pixels covered. Like, if a knife covers the most space, but all of this space is at the very bottom-right of the screen, it's still better than covering even a little bit of the centre of the screen

off topic but, thats a nice desktop you have, what linux distro do you use and which window manager? (if not de)
It's Ubuntu with default window management, I've done a bit of customizing, but it's pretty close to stock! I plan on moving on from Ubuntu in the future, but I wanted to transition from Windows smoothly
I kind of disagree. If you're a good player, your crosshair placement will be the biggest factor. Most of the time, you're centered on the enemy if you clear your corners right and do it with your weapon and not with your knive. I can't imagine a scenario where you put out your knife and your knife covers the enemy's position, potentially costing you the round. This was very interesting to know, and I appreciate your time and effort, but in my opinion, it's kind of pointless.
Thanks for the feedback, you're one of the few who respectfully shared that sentiment haha. Weather this experiment's conclusion is noteworthy or not, it was a fun project and I got a good excuse to mix programming with CS2 so I'm happy regardless.
yeah if you suddenly see an enemy and you have a knife in your hand, you'll most likely be dead anyways
@@onemansquadron that programming was epic. i'm kinda jealous that i can't code

Could also just change your viewmodel if you wanna see more :>
This thought came up, but I used default settings here.
I'm curious if changing the FOV would alter the ranking
Kid named viewmodel settings:
Also it's much more important to have a knife you like than to have one that covers 5 less pixels. Ages ago, I remember downloading some mod that made the Deagle into a revolver with a really long barrel, and I remember being able to hit more headshots with it because my subconscious treated it as a different weapon
1:04 ayoooo selection sort lets gooooo
Edit: +1 if others found it without reading the function name.
i'd say that karambit is better because it doesn't hide any middle screen which is where majority of the stuff you wanna see actually is if you have decent crosshair placement.
First TH-camr I've seen playing CS2 on Linux lol, it's amazing how much it has grown.
I gotta be honest. I have bought maybe 10-15 keys ever. I decided to do it again a few days ago and bought 1 key, opened a knife :-)

Yo it's actually crazy that the Kukri is #2, the knife feels like it takes up half your screen but I guess its just the very center of your screen haha. Great video man!
i mean, you can change your viewmodel, so...
smaller knives are actually a debuff someone made a video where the more your view is blocked by a knife the more frames you get in game, smaller knives = less fps
Now do: Fastest knife to render after switch.
I've seen a few people bring this up, I plan on it.

I have a stiletto knife, nice to know it's "pay to win"
W stiletto
You can change position of your hands to remove them if you want to, but i love this video
I am asking myself, what could this 'advantage' be that a cosmetic gives you? I mean, whether you see 1% more or less on the screen is irrelevant, because you can neither shoot with a knife in your hand, nor spot anything, whatever could be hidden by 1%.This has no impact on the game...
Try Apex Legends /Octane “Butterfly Knife " sprint animation

More like PAY to LOSE
what distro you running?
newest ubuntu. Been daily driving linux for a few months, and I'm thinking about switching to debian.
Giving you an advantage only when you have your knife out isn't really what i consider an advantage haha !
But nice video otherwise maybe you should do that same process but with all the weapons in the game and see which one gives the most fps IN COMBAT
this doesnt change anything because you can change your viewmodel to where you see just a little bit of the knife or you can see the knife up close either way this doesnt mean anything.
What about knives with special equipment sounds like the bowie, shadow daggers if they're quieter for enemies to hear compared to the default sheathe sound
brilliant.
I feel like it might be silent no? now that I think about it
@onemansquadron Yea that's what I was thinking too especially with the shadow daggers, they're nearly silent when you equip them. I'm not sure if it'd give an advantage like that
butterfly surely pay to lose...
I'm out in Central Oregon if you're ever around it would be fun to connect. Also do you think there is a probability for valve to make adjustments made to the hands, perspective, or size of knives because of the large differences between them or do you think it can be compensated for with view model adjustments? Also I think the counter strike competetive ranks need a redesign!
Seems like the difference in screen space doesn't bother most, so I doubt any change will come.
The premiere elo system is great, in my opinion. I'm not sure why comp hasn't adopted it.
If you ever want to reach out, message me on steam!
My esteemed digital compatriots, I am utterly enraptured by the sheer brilliance of this audiovisual masterpiece.
Take me out to dinner first
let's pretend to be serious:
even though it takes some space of your screen you don't actually look for enemies holding a knife at first place, 'cause obviously you use some gun
and, well, there's no knife big enough to make you somehow miss the enemy, although they a kinda centered at the bottom and hands are segregated so you don't have one big blind spot on the side where potentially could be standing an enemy
the only way to miss someone because of a knife is if they stand right beneath you with only head sticking out (like you stand up the silo on Nuke and the enemy is somewhere down but there are no that many such spots in cs in general)
well knife can be a moral boost but it comes to nothing with time
but it can be a moral decay for your enemies without knife (but let's be honest, are there still people who are jealous of pixels some other guy has?)
reading all that made me question myself: what am i wasting my life for?
now people will start pretending they always liked the navaja
"it's a tactical choice"
And dont forget about the FPS boost you get by rendering less pixels of the view model :)
Love that you included the code process. Bro got scientific with it🔥
I love that people love it!
Falchion knife is one of the things I noticed with smaller viewmodels when it came out but I am also curious about the program you use for other weapons. like finding the best viewmodels for reloading and shooting and how that affects gameplay
I wrote the program myself, and it could easily process anything, not just knives. Lmk if you're interested in a follow up video.
@@onemansquadron That sounds very cool, I'd be interested in that and other interesting content
Yes please do a video on this
I mean 4kliksphilipp showed that player models arent optimised. So you just need to disable the player model which gives you a buff in fps and in visibility
Fair! check out part two of this video for another big issue though!
that was a cool script and a fun project idea! I think knife positioning is a moot point now that you can adjust the view model, but it was still cool to see the process for calculating that.
thank you! and this is fair, but most people play on default so I was curious :)
There is something called FOV you can change it even the position of your hands
He didn't just say he prefers actually using AA.. 💀
AA?
@@onemansquadron Anti-Aliasing
@@Udhdvdhdjiwisjshzjfjfbdududjd who tf doesn't
Loads of people. I'd guess the majority of people who actually have good monitors.
Max graphics, no AA for clarity, no VSYNC for input delay and no motion blur for FPS games. Incredibly common practice.
Even on a 1080p monitor i will always take a sharper, more clear image with jagged pixels over a blurry artificial mess that also causes loss of detail at long distances.
Anti Aliasing makes your games look blurry and disgusting on any average gaming monitor as it is basically a filter covering/merging every second pixel or so on your screen.
AA these days is pretty much intended for garbage monitors with 720p or under. AA on modern hardware feels like blowing my cars front window full of fog before driving. (Ok that's a bit harsh maybe.)
A lil bit of a google search will show you pleeeenty of similar opinions. It definitely isn't just me.
Also having AA off helps with some people who get motion sickness from watching gameplay at high HZ which yes, is a thing apparently.
Up to preference though. And i respect yours. 👍@@onemansquadron
LMAO, falchion also had the quickest deploy time out of all knives years ago, not sure if it was even patched... Truly, a p2w weapon
Still bowie is my favourite knife
I mean...if you have your knife out when you run into an opponent then you're going to die regardless of how much many pixels it take up on the screen. Not sure what the point of this is.
skill issue
The karambit doesn’t block the middle of the screen so it’s the most op
got to remember tho... some knives are so fuckin ugly you might not want to even pull them out... increasing the amount of time your gun is up in ready position. Some knives may then be... pay to lose.
interesting take. If you only have a well worn paracord scorched, then maybe sell that for an AK bloodsport or something ahaha.
There's lots of cheap knives that look good though. Gut black lam, MW bowie Boreal forest just to name two!

It's been a better experience than windows so far!
Bowie still most underrated imho. They are great!
Nice Video, but how does more screen space (in the Middle) give you an advantage? When you peak with a knife you mostly do jiggle-peaks so only the left and the right side of your Screen matters which is adjustable by fov settings.
I agree this is not a common scenario, but with nasty pixel peaks in CS, the situation where an enemy peaks at an off-angle, while you run to point with your knife out does happen.
It happened to me with my bowie, where I just couldn't see them (unlucky) that's how I got the idea for the video!
i usually hold a gun instead of a knife in a fight but i guess i should hold a falchon from now on to see see more
this guy gets it
As a Karambit owner I want to unwatch this video, live in bliss and ignorance. The knowledge is painful 😞. Great video my guy, I love this type of random knowledge the cs community seems to find.
Hahaha, well keep your kara and just think of it as challenge mode.

you failed to explain how taking less pixels on the screen makes it pay to win or better
you see more than f2p
programming bros trying not to do the most useless shit ever known to humanity:
I had a falchion a couple years ago. Still my favorite knife. I always wanted a flachion fade. Cant justify paying real money for skins anymore though...
...but the shadow dagger are the lowest on screen despite them having more pixels
I think dagger's obscures vision the least and the falcon is a very slight advantage because they are actually the fastest attacking nice.. since csgo idk if they are still the fastest in cs2
bro forgot you can change the view angle
great genius mastermind you should run for president
you could do this with different viewmodels too as you can center and off center
Definitely picking up a falchion knife now
But the more space the knife takes up, the more geometry it culls so you will get more fps!!!
it doesnt really benefit you since, you dont expect an enemy while holding a knife
