    Big M65 fan here. I sprayed mine with a couple thick coats of scotch guard water repellent, letting it dry between coats. It’s a great jacket and very warm with the button in liner. Downside is it’s on the heavy side compared to modern jackets but I don’t care, it’s got character. I’d avoid waxing it though as that would just do more weight.

      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, there is something about it that's iconic and bomb proof. I think a bit of wax would make much difference. Someone else mentioned scotchgard, I've never used it. Fabsil is my latest favourite waterproofing agent at the moment. It works well. I have another video showing a waterproof test with the m65 jacket. It's sprayed with fabsil, it was a good result. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video 👍

    It's possible the jacket you wore as a kid already had a waterproofing agent applied to it. The m-65 takes a number of waterproofing applications quite well.

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's possible but highly unlikely, it was in the very early 1980s and my original then was about 30 to 40 years old, smelled like an old army surplus store in the UK and in my life then there wasn't any waterproof agents about I don't think.

    If your still on the prowl for a jacket that can bear a bit more of the elements, (not all are created equal) in my opinion Cockpit USA makes the finest M65 field jacket on the market. Nice one. I've got a video on how to apply the fabsil, but what you need to know is, what you're waterproofing with the fabsil will smell, so you've got to air it outside, or in a garage or shed for a few days. I've also done another video with the m65 that was waterproofed with fabsil and tested in the rain. You could make a video on modifying the hood. I'm sure you will get a lot of views. The field jacket was never ment to be water proof just warm. If it rained we would wear the old style water proof jacket and later the Gortex jacket. Ponchos and poncho liners were too unruly in a field environment. Spray Scotch Guard or some other form of water proofing if you want to wear it in the rain,that might work. All honesty we only wore those back at base camp because even in cold weather you could over heat in those things when humping hard. Just get wet,deal with it and put on your extra set of utilities that the Platoon Sgt told you to bring when off patrol....but your'e dumb, left them back at the base and you'll be wet and miserable for the next week because you did not want to listen. Its the same with the British jackets, we called the old waterproofs crisp packets because they weren't breathable and made a dull rustling sound when moving. Our ponchos were never used except as a tarp tent strung out on something. I wanted to do this experiment because of my experience with the M43 jacket I had as a teenager, then I was only in the rain for about 15 minutes so I thought I'd go back to the old place and relive that time and do the experiment as well, I had to find out the truth to see if it held the rain off for a bit of fun. As you may of guessed I went there twice, once in the sun and once in the rain, oh boy that rain didn't back off.

    Thank you for a beautiful walk - really lovely place you grew up. Have you tried the Fjällräven Greenland Wax? th-cam.com/video/BYvVaAWHSaA/w-d-xo.html

    Well if you are too invested in what you look like wearing it don't wear it.

      I can't remember what I said about it, I made the video a few years ago. I don't wear it because I have other jackets and clothes for different occasions, however, if it was the only jacket I had I would wear it all the time. I've never been the one to try to look good in the outdoors, though I do dress clean and sort of smart in urban society. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video. 💯👍
