    Hi my lovely teachers!!
    Can we say -The river has dried up. Or we should say the river is dried up.

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Good question!
      I think it depends on when it happened.
      If it recently changed, or it's seasonal (i.e. it frequently dries up before filling up with water every year): "The river has dried up. We've had a really dry summer this year."
      But if the water went away a while ago, and you think the water is never coming back: "The river is dried up. No one can go fishing here anymore :( "
      Hope that makes sense!

    Thank you ever so much for this helpful lesson.
    Does the phrasal verb (blow over)have another meaning than the one you talked about during this helpful episode?
    I mean regarding wind.
    Cuz I heard this
    /Barely had we pitched our tent when a gust of wind blew it over./

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Very good question, and yes!
      If the wind flips something over or turns it upside down, it can "blow it over". This isn't a phrasal verb exactly, because it's literally happening, but it's a good phrase to know!

  • @anandaupasiri
    @anandaupasiri 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I really enjoy the way both of you teach English. Instead of saying the storm died down, can we say the storm eased off and the rain is easing off? Instead of saying it's really chucking it down, can we say it's really bucketing down or the rain is really coming down in buckets or it's really coming down? I am sure native speakers don't like the idiomatic expression it's raining cats and dogs.

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good suggestions! You can definitely say: "The storm eased [off]." OR "The rain eased [up]."
      We have discussed doing a whole episode on all the British expressions to talk about rain because there are so many 😅
      - It's bucketing down
      - It's coming down in buckets
      - It's coming down in sheets!
      - It's hammering it down. 🔨
      - It's really coming down.
      and there are more!
      "It's raining cats and dogs" is more often used ironically these days because you are right, it has become a bit cliche. Native speakers don't really say it sincerely, but as a joke. I even heard it on the news and in a recent TV show - so it's still out there. It's one that's good to know just in case.
