Episode 10: Stan Efferding debunks the common held belief that you become weaker as you get older.
Stan Efferding is best known for being one of the strongest bodybuilders that ever lived. While he does not compete today, he is still well regarded for his functional training knowledge and expertise in weightlifting. That's why Mike O'Hearn invited Efferding onto the podcast to dive deep into advanced training techniques - specifically on how to continue to excel as you age. In Generation Iron and Barbend's latest episode of The Mike O'Hearn Show, Stan Efferding details how it is 100% possible to lift your strongest at 50 years old compared to your max weight in your 20s.

I am 40 yrs old and going harder than I was in my 20’s. There was a long period of destruction in my 30’s and a lot of lost time I am making up for, but I have goals to reach and I won’t let age hinder my progression…

During my 30's I did a heavy duty program and became 3x stronger. Now in my 50's I do a more balanced Robby Robinson program heavy/light rotation. I will be doing the Tampa Universe Show in September Grand Masters 50+ division. We are blessed to have 25+ years of this gift. It's like having 3 healthy lives in one. This all begins with a choice that turns into a clean lifestyle.

I'm 60 now and have been through catastrophic illness. Bone marrow loss in both tibial bones. Advance degenerative disk disease. Having 3 back surgeries resulting in titanium rods from my s1 to t-11. And a cage on my C-4 and C-5. . Yet at 60 I stayed in the gym and lift around my debilitating injuries to look as good or better than most 30 year old people. Not to mention the reduced pain from lifting. I hope at 80 I will be still in there. My rep range is 8 reps to 15 to 20 depending on my stage of training. My max I use a 3 rep max. Never a 1 rep max to prevent injuries. At my age I have to take an HRT. BUT it works and allows me to maintain my lean muscle mass.

Awesome and informative show !!! First time catching this show. I have been training for over 40 years, I’m 55,will be 56 in early 2023….i competed naturally in my early 20 s and then again in my early 30s and then went on gear in 2001 at 34 years old and competed consistently from 2001 to 2010 at a National level .
All these years i have been working in the construction industry since i was 18 . My Mentality was to be the hardest worker in the gym as well as on the construction job site . If i wasn’t sore for 5 days after training legs i felt i didn’t train hard enough, same for other body parts . The worst part was looking back i probably was under eating by 1,500. Calories if not more .
Since turning 50, i have had a few surgeries due to injuries, I’m sure a combination of working and training real hard . I have modified my training some with the goal of longevity, while still improving.
I always s try to eat well but as I’ve gotten older my appetite has dropped quite a bit as well as my taste for certain foods . I’m looking forward to watching the nutritional based show .
    Keep up the great shows

I’m 58. I do resistance training 5 days a week including 2 leg days. At 16 I weighed 70 kg and today I’m 72 kg. I was a chronic runner until I got into resistance training 10 years ago. Injuries slowed my muscle gains due to a gung ho attitude. I’m more knowledgeable and wiser now and much more careful in training. I train now in the RIR of 0-2. I log all workouts. 10-20 sets per muscle group weekly. Nowadays I lift up to 15 reps per set and then increase the weight.

I’m a 46 year old woman and let me tell you everything is way easier now than it was when I was younger. I never could get the muscularity and leanest I get now. I started tracking my calories because I’m prepping for a show and I must’ve been eating around 3,000 a day before my diet because I’m eating “very little” and I am clocking around 2,000 a day (I always have visible abs even when not dieting) In the past when I was in my late teens and early 20s I would have to keep my calories around 1500 just to look average and I was working out like crazy. I always looked chunky. I don’t know if it’s a hormonal shift or what but I’m thrilled by it. Now if my face would just match my body I’d be all set 😂😭
Edit - Mona is a queen I can relate to the better in my 40s than in my 20s. I had my two kids in my 20s they are adults now that hit the gym regularly - can’t wait to see Titan grow up much love to your beautiful family Mike 😊😊😊

48 going on 49, it gets harder but I’m sticking at it. Chest is my weak point. Every other body part I’m happy with, chest for me is a real struggle to build. I guess we all have one body part that lags.

Nutrition is the foundation but yet in society, high percentages of adults choose an age where they let go of discipline and binge eat on sugar and fatty foods. SMH. Mike OHearn is revolutionary in his approach.

It’s amazing how Mike Ohearn is just as big as Stan considering Stan has used steroids and Mike is natural. I also find it fascinating Mike claims it’s all genetics and he has low t pushing the weights he’s pushing. I tried looking up his several brothers because If it’s genetics they should be as big as he is. Funny I can’t find anything about them.

Are you kidding me?! Not 1 word about PEDs!!!
Allow me to give you the real reason these guys look the way they do. PEDs. That is what allows them to sustain the muscle mass, the bone density, the connective tissue.
Without it, they would be declining at their current age.
Take it away and it all falls apart.
Yes they train still, but without the PEDs, they would not be in the shape they are in.

Plus constant use of PEDs or properly Dr prescribed TRT is beyond the price range for most older men in less economically prosperous parts of the world, unless they actually supply the drugs themselves (criminals).
