29:45 That's Yoren, a Night's Watch member. He's the same person that was travelling with Tyrion when Catelyn arrested him, and he rode to King's Landing to tell Ned about what happened. He also met Arya at that point and mistook her for a boy. When Ned says "Baelor" he's referring to the statue. He's drawing Yoren's attention to Arya without mentioning her directly, knowing that Yoren will recognize her and help her out.

I had the misfortune of reading the second book first. (I had the 'flu and was desperate for something to read, and it was lying around the living room -- by the time I realized it was the second book in a series, I wanted something to distract me from being ill so much that I just didn't care anymore, although I usually avoid reading series out of order.)
When I started the first book and realized that Ned was actually alive, I was weirdly shocked. I was like "Eddard Stark was actually _alive_ when this series started!?" I have no idea why this surprised me so much; I guess I just thought that all that stuff had happened before the actual story began. But I said it out loud, and then all of my friends laughed at me. It's...really not the ideal order in which to read the books. I'm still rather sad that I never got to experience the same shock that those who read the books (or watched the show) in the proper order did.

And it isn't a complete sacrifice of 2000 Starks in the books. In fact, the majority of the Stark army (under the command of Roose Bolton) faces Tywin at the Green Fork but Robb takes all his cavalry to attack Jaime and relieve the siege of Riverrun. Bolton's force fights a brief but bloody battle but then retreats largely intact to fight another day. However, much the vanguard (primarily comprised of Starks, Cerwyns, Karstarks, Hornwoods and Manderlys) suffers heavy casualties.
Robb actually ambushes Jaime, luring him and only 100 or so retainers into a trap. With Jaime's army now leaderless and divided in their siege camps, Robb defeats each section of the host piecemeal in a decisive victory. Genuinely, Robb is one of the best battlefield tacticians in the stories. They do show some of this in the show but these engagements are light on detail.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@mjwoodroff8446 Tactics at that sort of small scale are _really_ difficult to portray in visual media. It's easier to convey large-scale strategy decisions, like they did here with the question of whether to march on Tywin's army or Jaime's, than it is to successfully portray small group tactics, which tend to just come across as chaotic on film. Books are a better medium for that.
I agree that they did try to get it across, but I'm not sure how much of the books' portrayal of Robb's tactical brilliance they really could have managed in a TV show, even if they hadn't been limited by budget.

Everything was going great until Arianna opened up her mouth with They are going to kill him anyway three times!!!!!! And the smirk at the end didn't help either. It's better not to say anything and watch the show without spoiling things, even for us who have watched it hundreds of times. 💢💢💢😒😤

Thrones really checks our biases as 21st century people.
We assume the witch would do right by Danny because Danny was nice to her…
    Spoilers…
We assumed all the freed slaves would be stoked or would want the fighting pits to end.

Tiny book spoiler about Tyrion and Tysha. In the book Tywin made Tyrion go last during his and Tysha's... punishment... and pay with a golden dragon because a Lannister, even the lowest of them, was worth more. Fucked up.

Yoren is a recruiter for the Night' s Watch. If you rewind to like Episode 4 Bumpkins and Snarks I think, he has a drink with Thorne or someone and says he's headed to King's Landing to find some new recruits. He's not technically one of the Stark's men but he's a northerner subject to their rule I am pretty sure. Buckle in because this trains gonna start going faster and faster.

The scent of hot bread drifting from the shops along the Street of Flour was sweeter than any perfume Arya had ever smelled. She took a deep breath and stepped closer to the pigeon. It was a plump one, speckled brown, busily pecking at a crust that had fallen between two cobblestones, but when Arya's shadow touched it, it took to the air.
Her stick sword whistled out and caught it two feet off the ground, and it went down in a flurry of brown feathers. She was on it in the blink of an eye, grabbing a wing as the pigeon flapped and fluttered. It pecked at her hand. She grabbed its neck and twisted until she felt the bone snap.
Compared with catching cats, pigeons were easy.
A passing septon was looking at her askance. "Here's the best place to find pigeon," Arya told him as she brushed herself off and picked up her fallen stick sword. "They come for the crumbs." He hurried away.
In case you wonder how Arya survived on the streets.

In the days before antibiotics, any cut -- even a very minor one -- had the potential to become septic. Sepsis has been the cause of death of a number of famous military figures throughout history, no witchcraft or bad medicine or sabotage of dressings required.

    *i want Jaime to die*
heres a quote from Gandalf to rethink wishing death to anzone even fictional character
Frodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.'
Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many
There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, BESIDES that of evil.
you 2 ladies are smart, well versed, intalligent, beutiful,i hope zou do well!

They actually toned down Tyrion and Taisha's story from the books - its so much darker. The books are well worth a read, if you have the stomach for misery and extremely long descriptions of food.
