    I just got around to reading your email and yes I see your point , my interest in water craft extends to a day on the water and my needs are best served with a light easily transportable boat. Two different needs and if ever I was in a storm I think I’d prefer your boat to anything I could float.
    Thank you for your wonderful posts and your individualistic humour .

    well done mate. looks great, fun, pretty rapid and balanced.

      Thanks man, he's fun! With my poly tarp sail we were flying, ama was planing and bow throwing huge chunks of spray at us. Was wild. No GPS and no GoPro so it's just a memory, but he's fast! Then I switched to my smaller lateen and things became much more relaxing........ For a test run in a F5 he proved to be very capable. More to come........

      @@BalkanShipyards Hey! I bet someone has already asked this but, I've been looking into proa design for a while and was wondering does the "leeboard" on the ama actually help? What's its purpose? ? Doesn't it create a lot of boat turning drag?

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really counteracts leeway! boat will point much better and sail closer..... this is a flat bottom low draft canoe, before adding the leeboard it sailed sideways.... I believe leeboards are more risky then a daggerboard, because a vessel can trip over it's leeboard in a gust, on the other hand a daggerboard on the windward hull eliminates that risk totally. Therefor, I replaced the leeboard with a windward daggerboard.
      Yes, it effects boat balance, you need to learn except for how much sheet to pull in and where to sit, also you must get daggerboard depth right for true balance, it takes time to understand and it does complicate rudderless sailing. Anyway, it's worth it.
      Proas are easy to build but not so to design, mine are getting better the more I experiment with the different components, reassuring me that there are solutions, we must just ask the right questions in our search for the right solutions............

      @@BalkanShipyards Hey, thank you super much for the reply. I mixed up lee and daggerboards in my first post. I've only built kayaks and traditional wooden clinker rowboats so far, but have planned to build a drua or proa as my first sailing vessel. I find them endlessly fascinating.

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google Hans Klaar he has an amazing Drua. His sails like a cat, only forwatd... A true shunting Drua may be hard to control single handed. So think about a small boat first, about 5 meters long, it will be simpler and the mistakes u make will be cheaper..... you want a boat that will make u, not break u........... Good luck

    You can do most of the steering by the angle of the mast and how much you pull the sail. Also placing your weight forward or aftOnly downwind requires a paddle steering, best with a free paddle close to the main hullI dont know if my old videos arr still available, but I show this inbone of them 10 years ago or more

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that is true and I have sailed him like that a lot. When I sheet in I move forward, or I ask Jenia to move forwards. When ease the sheet, I move aft. at 2 minutes 54 u will see that my oar is actually raised and boat is holding course well. But still having the oar ready, helps.
      Another thing to take into account is rocker, which I have none of.... A fellow sailor in one of the forums shed light on the fact that "Why Not?" seems to change course easily, which is true. Small weight shifts dramatically change his headings. He related this to the flat bottom, which is very logical, since CLR will move much more as you shift weight for and aft just because as one end is pressed down other rises... A hull with more rocker will do the same but CLR will not move as much.
      As for mast canting... I will try to keep on sailing with fixed masts for now, It seems to work well and looks like less hassle... Although crab claws work better when canted. For now I'm happy with how things work.

    One more thing that you may consider that worked for me on my lateen sail. I sew in a big plastic zipper one third of the way to be able to reduce sail size at days with high winds. It worked very good. Also I had brailing lines to scandalize the sail. It worked very well

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      very interesting.... A zipper!
      For now I will try sailing with both my sails. Both are rigged on their spars and ready to be hoisted. My big sail is just under 8 square meters. The second is under 6 square meters with two reef lines....
      Will just have to give it a shot and see..... Thanx for the input.
      All d best.

    Do you think your over engineering your boats?
    Don’t get me wrong I enjoy your videos but they seem so robust rather than gracile are you designing for a storm event ? Just saw a craft about the same length and it had nothing like the sturdy lumbers you have.

    • @BalkanShipyards

      My boats are prototypes for a big Proa, Still I have sailed quite far with my Proas, I have been in big seas, F5, F6 anything flimsy in those conditions will break. Those that don't respect the power of the sea are those that we watch on Discovery how they got rescued.......
