    I have 2 bronze watches. The aquatic and the San Martin 6105 homage. I love them both. I like the way the patina changes the look of the watch, however overtime they start to leave green marks on your wrist (typically the crown and the strap buckle) and so when they get to this stage I soak them in lemon juice to rejuvenate them and then the cycle starts again. I love the aquatic, especially the domed sapphire glass and the distortion that you get. I took the back off to see out of curiosity and am really pleased to see 2 “O” ring seals inside the case, and have confidence that it probably gives the stated water resistance. Also amazing Lume.

    Great video as always Dave!!! I suspect the change in the bezel sound might be due to the inherent factor of bronze wanting to hang together over time. Other reviews have mentioned the need to keep the bezel moving so it doesn’t stick. Maybe that’s why the sound changes after a couple of turns. Personally I’m not a fan of bronze and the patina factor. I’d be constantly polishing it to keep it nice and shiny. I don’t like the way my body has developed its own “patina” over my 67 years on this earth, and I don’t want to be reminded of that everytime I check the time of day! LOL

    I always wanted to get a bronze watch, there is just something about them that attracts me a lot..The fact that they age by themselves makes it much more cooler. You can see a change in it pretty much everyday. Enjoyed the great review, Dave!

    Thanks for this review. I do hope bronze watches were offered with an optional 'stay bright' finish. I can never get my head around the patina formation and dulling of the case over a period of time. This is the reason I have not added a bronze watch to my collection as on date.

    Calvin sent me this watch to review a few days ago. The only difference is mine is the model with the bronze bezel. The watch completely looses the Tudor vibe with the bronze bezel while gaining lots of character. Personally I wouldn't want a ceramic bezel on this watch unless I actually needed the readability for diving. I thoroughly wiped the Horween leather strap with Weiman leather wipes and the leather looks and feels spectacular imo. Love the inner domed sapphire crystal. Outstanding accuracy as well. This watch is a 10!

    One thing I always wondered about bronze watches, since I didn't yet get to hold one in my hands, is whether or not they smell. I hate the smell of copper and especially the fact that it lingers on your hands. So, does it smell?

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They do smell like copper, but so far I've only noticed it if I get up really close, and even then it's not overpowering it. I just cleaned it up with some lemon juice and it looks brand new. Now to see how it patinas again this time. I do like that green ceramic bezel and may buy it to replace mine, but still on the fence.

    I do love a bronze watch.
    I've actually got a few, but nothing really that special.
    A little $30 Timex Field watch that's bronze plated. It looks great on a the leather nato it came on and being quartz, it's a great 'grab and go' piece. I also have 3 vintage bronze Vostoks...well, all the old Vostoks are bronze, these just didn't get the chrome plating! They are either Amphibia's or Kommandirskie's and all MOD anniversary or commemorative pieces with rather kitsch dials celebrating (or commemorating) I don't know what!..., but they are great occasional wear pieces for my Soviet Saturday / Soviet Sunday wearing. They are great on a leather nato with bronze buckles etc. and great on Marine Nationale' type straps with bronze clips and sliders. I got both from Cheapest Nato Straps.
    Re this piece? I like it. The Tudor snowflake hands are a bit much for me. I have homage watches with Rolex's Mercedes hands so I'm not sure why it bothers me so much?.. Also, the ceramic bezel insert seems a bit counter intuitive *if* one buys the watch due to the way it patinas? Having a bezel that will be as bright and shiny as it is straight out of the box for decades doesn't really suit a watch with lots of patina IMO, so maybe a choice to go for an aluminium insert would be a good idea? And that black mesh strap is hideous!, a 'Marine Nationale' type strap in the same colours as the nato you had the piece on in the post would make a great 2nd strap to that beautiful piece of leather!
    I'm being pretty picky hey? I don't dislike the piece, not at all. It's just not a watch I would buy if I was after a bronze watch. Mainly due to the hands. However I'm sure I'd admire it on someone's wrist if I saw it in the wild.
    Great review as always Dave. Hope you and yours are well and healthy.
    Cheers, Anthony.

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn't know that the older Vostoks were commonly bronze. I I guess that sort of makes sense, kind of cool that something that was probably considered inferior to stainless steel is now becoming trendy and desirable now. I thought i would hate the snow flake hands on this, as I never fancied them in pictures, but in person I actually like them more than Mercedes hands. Not sure why.

    • @anthonysmith2982
      @anthonysmith2982 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just the Watch - Yeah, I've often thought the same about bronze Vostoks. I only paid $70 - $90 for my Soviet era watches...but I have, ...well too many of them really. They're actually starting to get on in age so I only wear them on weekends, but rotating through them all is hard 'cause I'm particularly drawn to 3 or 4 in particular. I need to sell some. It's stupid.
      Re. the snowflake hands? I don't know. I adore the Tudor black bays so the hands obviously don't bother me that much and I don't even really like the Rolex Mercedes hands that much.
      As I tried to say, it's a piece I'm convinced I'd like if I saw it on someone else's wrist, but not something I'd buy.
      Maybe I'm kidding myself 'cause I know that I need to cull my collection before I even *think* of buying another watch!!
      That's the problem with liking inexpensive watches... They seem to add up!
      Still loving the channel Dave!
      Cheers and best.

    Great review, and the new camera shots you've been using are fantastic!
    I have to agree, there is something satisfying about having a bronze watch. Not only does it round out the watch enthusiast's collection, but it's an option for something totally different than other dive watches that you may have. The patina/aging that happens makes the watch distinctively yours and when you get tired of it, use some lemon juice and shine it up again. For those looking for another option for their first-timer bronze watch is the 62MAS homage from San Martin (Available from the Lugyou Store on Ali Express, $223.17 currently). Here your getting one of the most classic dive watch case designs inspired by the famous Seiko 62MAS and more recent Seiko reissues. Like the awesome-looking Aquatico, you're also getting a Seiko NH35 movement, but the San Martin has a big "top hat" sapphire crystal, 'burly'-bezel action, and insane lume. I already had the classic Submariner-style watch in my collection so getting something different really added to the variety in my collection. [Edit: I just caught, last month's video, seems we agree on this on. LOL]
    I've been enjoying how you are expanding your collection and not getting repetitive pieces, this unique case style (shape and material) really worked for me and your three points of why the bronze case is a great choice are spot-on. I'll add that for a bronze watch, something that has a hardy dive/tool watch vibe, try a one of the big rubber/silicone straps that have the flexible folds near the lugs. It ads to the tough look of the bronze. Great work as always!

    • @JusttheWatch

      Thanks Garth! I still haven't gotten my hands on a San Martin yet, but they've been on my radar for awhile, seem like a really incredible value!

    But I wouldn't consider bronze a luxury metal. It is in every objective way inferior to stainless steel, as it's cheaper and easier to manufacture and machine. I'd say it's a novelty - not implying anything negative.

  • @jeffreygleaves2931
    @jeffreygleaves2931 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heimdallr has several bronze versions. It would take a little maintenance rubbing the tarnish off and you wouldn't be able to get in the cracks, but that's what patina is all about. I would like to see one that has oxidized and hand buffed to check out what the bronze looks like. I would also like to see one with a bronze bezel.

  • @PETERJOHN101
    @PETERJOHN101 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This brown strap does not provide adequate contrast to the bronze metal as it is too similar in color. A very dark brown (almost black) strap would compliment the watch better. I would like to see a case developed combining 5% to 10% bronze with titanium in order to achieve a slight patina that is consistent over time while providing a watch that is lighter and more scratch resistant. I am also not a fan of green accented watches however this one is decent looking. Good reveal.

    Beautiful watch, but the date alignment in the window needs to be addressed, especially on a watch commanding well north of $250. My Steeldives (1953, 1964, 1970, 1975XP) do not exhibit this issue; at a fraction of the price. Same, of course, regarding the bezel action.
    I did pull the trigger on a Bronze diver...a Cronos Turtle diver with sunburst green dial and bronze bezel....for only $123. Basically, the Cronos alternative to a Bronze SD1970 "Cpt Willard" from Steeldive.

    Could the bezel action be due to the bronze - some corrosion could be happening on the underside that breaks free with use. Thoughts?

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's something I'm wondering about in the long run, but the bezel did that right out of the box, so I don't think the patina is the culprit here. Again, functionally it's not any problem at all. The concern if have is that it's a sign that the bezel could fail in the future after some hard use.

      Jim is right. This is normal on most bronze watches. There is a little corrosion even when the watch is "new" developed since it was produced. Mine is really hard to turn if I didn't do in a while.

    Bronce is a softer metal compared to steel; I dont think that because of a vintage look or a more-faster-coming worn look the market is going to change. I could be wrong but because of a softer material , the look could be an indicative of a lower level and quality watch.

    Great review Dave. A real interesting choice. Would have loved so to, since some people may not know the specs of the NH35, how many seconds +/- is it running, hacks? , how many jewels? , screw done crown?

    • @JusttheWatch

      I didn't do extensive accuracy testing on this one, but the few days I was tracking it it was extremely accurate, varying between -4 and +3 seconds per day such that it actually averaged out to 0 seconds a day. It does have a screw down crown as well.

    Hi Dave, How are you doing?
    This Aquatico Bronze Sea Star looks awesome in this interesting review !!!
    You are right the Aquatico Bronze Sea Star offers a wonderful value for the money and judging from my experience they do the same with the other watches too!!!
    I have the stainless steel "SEA STAR 300 BLACK GOLD CERAMIC BEZEL" which is a masterpiece really...probably the best of the lot (other SEA STAR for sale on the AQUATICO web site). Black gold color scheme works perfectly; the sapphire crystal, the ceramic bezel and the beautifully finished bracelet along with the carefully adjusted automatic movement NH35 (on my watch -1 sec/day or less) give me the feeling of owning a really well-built timepiece...not a perfect watch but certainly a masterpiece at that price ($299)...well done AQUATICO !!!
    Thank you Dave for your videos !!!
    P.S.: stay safe !!!

    • @zezem
      @zezem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Different amounts of tin. Some companies use a splash of aluminium in addition, which changes how it patinas. CuSn8 is the most popular, described as "marine grade" bronze.

    I don't think bronze and diver watches go together very well. Modern diver watches are too blingy and stainless steel is more suitable in that application. My supposition is that bronze and field watches are a more natural pairing.
