    Very interested idea. How do you think chokes would affect the performance? I imagine you’d want to use a cylinder bore to make sure you don’t disrupt the captive wad and make sure it stays together for as long as possible. A tight choke would probably rip open the wad and cause it to release the shot much sooner.

    Interesting, as it loses velocity it must tumble and loose the shot. What did you film that slow motion barrel shot with? Looked hi resolution for the frame rate used.

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the wad tumbles through air resistance I think. This was all through 1/2 choke. The interesting thing was that though true cylinder and at 50 metres, the wad still punches a clean hole through the target so has a considerable amount of shot behind it still, and it hadn't tumbled, but there were about 28 pellets all around it in about a 12" group.
      The camera I used is just one of my GoPros on 50 fps with flux.

      Italians really know how to make good shotguns and ammo! :) I hope you guys will come out with good solutions after EU will ban the lead and only can use steel shot (and other materials for more cost of course).

    Sry about last post. these are interesting rounds. I would love to see it in slow motion to see what they are actually doing when the pellets spread.

      I tried it with one round, but at 120 frames per second no chance! 😄

  • @Mojocvh

    yeah but what's the striking energy of 2 shot at those distances?

  • @CVNOU
    @CVNOU 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wow, that was incredible. I've never seen a shotgun shell like that. The spread of the shot began to be useful around 120 meters. At what distance do you think the pattern is spread out too wide and no longer effective? I guess the velocity and distance of the shot would also play into the usefulness also. Great video, thanks for sharing.

    • @freedomofabird
      @freedomofabird  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +CVN71 OU812 With true cylinder the shot starts to open at 40metres and is good to about 80-90 metres. Half choke really does seem to hold it together.

      And what if you use a modified choke ?

      No it depends on the choke. You can get them to start opening up at 40 metres, you just need to find the right choke.
      Thanks for the comment

      @@freedomofabird 3 choke is a UK 1/2 right? Wouldn’t a tighter choke disrupt the captive wad and allow it to open sooner than the intended 100 meters. Granted, from the video is showing half choke shows to be no problem. Maybe a full choke would have that detrimental effect? My thinking was no choke would be best, since the wad is doing all the work

    very cool cartridge! I havent heard of these before. thank you very much for sharing!

  • @Cuccos19

    These wads will save the long range shot after steel shot will be the new standard and we cannot use tight chokes (more tight than the modified / half choke). I wish there would be 20, 40 and 80 "metri" shotshell as well (as far as I know there is a 60 metri already). If I'm right the number - in this case 100 - says the distance where the wad will open up and release the shots. So the 100 Metri is a very-very long range shotshell. With a decently sized shot (5mm maximum in Hungary for sports hunters, non-professional hunters) this 100 Metri would be a nice cartridge for golden jackal, maybe (or for coyote in the USA).
    EU forcing the ban on lead shot which will come around 2022 or 2023. So putting as least pressure as we can on the barrels with steel shots, we might better go for cylinder or improved cylinder (or so called one quarter) chokes. Than 20, 30, 40 "metri" would be nice to shoot for 40, 50 or 60 meters which are quite usual for game bird shooting (60 meters for the second shot on flying away mallards for example). Actually I think maybe these wads would make chokes unnecessary. That would be a safer option for steel shots and would be easier and cheaper to make shotgun barrels. Maybe, but I’m just speculating.

    • @mattholley3642
      @mattholley3642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with your points here Cuccos. These cartridges look like a very good alternative for steel shot to save the wear on a barrel/choke. My thinking is that cylinder bore would be the best for these type of cartridges to prevent the choke from disrupting the wad and spilling the shot out sooner than anticipated. The ‘100 Metri’ also seem to be a good long range alternative to slugs/centrefire rifles at the right ranges. In Ireland/UK for example, shotguns are much easier to obtain and slugs on a shotgun certificate are illegal. I’d be quite happy to take a fox at 90-odd meters with a cylinder bore shotgun and some kind of sighting system like a red dot with these shotshells.
      Is there any chance you’ve managed to test some of these yourself? You are right in saying they’re available in ‘60 Metri’ variety, but I too would like to see a wider selection of distance ratings.
      Also, has the EU ban on lead shot progressed at all?
      Curious to know,
      Cheers,
      Matt

      @@mattholley3642 Hi Matt,
      I'm not a gun owner at the moment, but I'm planning to do my license next year. So currently I have no personal experience with these - or any kind of - cartridges. Actually I've seen these Cheddite cartridges on Hungarian hunting shop's website - certainly no postal delivery, only personal buy at the gunshop, with the right license (e.g. you only have 16 bore shotgun you cannot buy 12, 20 or any other bore ammo, not even for a gun what your friend legally handed to you (must have a legal paper written about it). He must provide the ammunition as well).
      EU planned for a while to ban lead shot and lead rifle projectiles in all forms. The muzzleloader society will be in the biggest trouble as you cannot use any other material than lead for muzzleloading firearms. Shame on the politicians, it's not about environment protection but it's all about disarming the law following citizens (criminals doesn't care about following the law lead or not lead no matter).
      I'm watching several UK based TH-cam channels (TGS, TSC for example) but I didn't know about that with shotgun license you cannot keep and shoot slugs. It was a new information, thank you! :)

      For many sporting shooters I agree, but for vermin control, they are a useful addition to the armoury. They are a niche cartridge but as I have recently discovered, excellent for taking out a few crows with one shot, that were feeding on a carcass.
