My brother and I would watch this every time it was on. We learned to program in BASIC thanks to the tutorials. We sent off for the little guide-book and had a tape full of games we'd written. We were quite undisciplined and wrote on the hoof and then spent ages de-bugging. I knew someone who wrote for the Speccy in machine code and I was very impressed. It was all very good fun and mentally stimulating.
03:10 for my UK friends of a certain age, the invention of "using an electronic rubber" (oo-er) still remains a fantasy ;-) though, given our certain age, it would now be a moot point. Cheers, big ears.
When I was teaching my robot how to wash the dishes, I had exactly the same problem. God bless you For-Next loop. Great clip. Wonder what Fred is up to these days,
@daro2096 It may have been on at that time as well, but originally - if memory serves me well - it was more a 6pm show. It was repeated at least once, as this episode was recorded on the re-run. Same with 'Database.' Remember that? :)
This is brilliant! I have learned so much more efficiently with this than I ever did with the orange book you got with the speccy 48k . Shame the other episodes are not around. Btw, Fred looks cool with the beard, a bit like Blackadder :)
Did anyone else pop open a BBC emulator to give this a go? I want the listings now! Does anyone know where they might be? Actually, I'm tempted to send a large stamped addressed envelope to the address and see what happens.
Glad you enjoyed it. :) Yes, these TV programmes really helped me too, and coupled with magazines like, INPUT, got me totally hooked on BASIC. Also agree about his beard! Very cool. I've just remembered that I've got a Carol Vorderman 8bit/16bit show somewhere. I'll probably upload that next.
@simpleminded1uk: I used to type them out on my Speccy and it usually all worked out okay (after a few tantrums) Would be good to find the rest of the series though and see how the game turns out.
robotmad I don't have any more episodes I'm afraid. May upload a better quality version of this one some time though. I had all but one on dad's old Phillips VCR, but swapped em all, machine and all, for a Phillips G7000 console. :/
We need TV shows like this today.

The lovely clunking of the keys at the end as Mr. Harris plays the game. It's beautiful!

Still waiting for my listings! Dam you Harris!
I have the book, and the tape for the Electron. I got them from a car boot sale many years ago.
"Next week, Fred writes the Quake Engine"
