I just love this song too. I wish Secession had done more music. Unfortunately their time as a band only spans 4 years. I often wonder what could have been. Their earliest music sounds very much like early New Order or Joy Division. Then much like New Order, over the next few years their sound became more polished and poppier. I always thought of this song and Bizarre Love Triangle as musical cousins.
DJPR3P bang on man. I agree 100% with what you said. Secession remains one of my favorite more obscure 80s bands. along with Boxcar, Vicious Pink, Altered Images, etc, etc. stuff like that. you get the idea. thx for sharing
When I started to hear this in the clubs, I never heard this group before in the late 80s. I looked for it and for some reason it was really hard to find bc at the time it only came out on import and a low distribution of this record. I guess the US release never happened, so I couldn’t find this record. Also. Ended up working at a popular record store in 1990 for about 3 years and many came in looking for this song and we didn’t have. Finally someone bootlegged it with Cube “Love’s Taboo” on the other side and sold like hot cakes. A customer found one in a used record store for $100. and even with the bootleg now out, I wanted the original import 12”. So I traded him 2 rare hip hop records and got the record. He knew it was bootlegged and now selling at my store and said he felt bad, but I thought I got the better deal. I ended up finding another copy for a lot less and now still have 2 copies of this gen.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I can vividly remember recording the mix on Live 105 on Friday night in San Francisco and this song played on the radio. Fell in love with it and reminds me of a much simpler time in life.
I was also living in the Bay Area (Oakland) in the late 80s when I was in the Army stationed at the old Oakland Army Base and first heard this song and band. Bought the CD at the Tower Records store in Berkeley.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded! Thank you DJPR3P for sharing. Takes me back to those summer weekends club hopping in Houston during the late 80's and early 90's. Miss the clubs like #'s, NRG, Excess, 6400, Lizard Lounge, etc. If the chance were mine you know I'd go but all along you made that easy for me If I had the chance to gaze again upon the ocean tell me what would I see? An empty sky an empty sea a violent place for us to be Give it up now baby c'mon c'mon darling you'll never understand the pain you caused me You'd spin my head around kick me when I'm down I found my feet again now I can't lose Now I'm on the street full of people passing by and they're all laughing at me Then I'm in a room without a door and all the walls are closing in on me An empty sky a violent sea all these things you are to me Give it up now baby c'mon c'mon darling you'll never understand the pain you caused me You'd spin my head around kick me when I'm down I found my feet again now I can't lose I played the fool for you broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away so you're the fool today you'll never understand the joy it gave me An empty sky a violent sea And I don't need to be afraid the skies are blue the seas are blue now that I'm away from you Give it up now baby c'mon c'mon darling you'll never understand the pain you caused me You'd spin my head around kick me when I'm down I found my feet again now I can't lose I played the fool for you broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away so you're the fool today you'll never understand the joy it gave me Show me the way and says that here I can stay And I don't need to be afraid cause you can't unlock the gates And the skies are blue and the seas are blue now that I'm away from you Give it up now baby c'mon c'mon darling you'll never understand the pain you caused me You'd spin my head around kick me when I'm down I found my feet again now I can't lose I played the fool for you broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away so you're the fool today you'll never understand the joy it gave me
Anyone else enjoying this song in 2020 while reminiscing in the awesome music of the 80's/90's and wishing the opportunity to relive days past? If the chance were mine, you know I'd go But all along you made that easy for me If I had the chance to gaze again upon the ocean Tell me, what would I see? An empty sky An empty sea A violent place For us to be Give it up now baby C'mon, c'mon darlin' You'll never understand the pain you've caused me You spin my head around Kick me when I'm down I found my feet again, now I can't lose Now I'm on a street Full of people passing by And they're all laughing at me Then I'm in a room without a door And all the walls are closing in on me An empty sky A violent sea All these things You are to me Give it up now baby C'mon, c'mon darlin' You'll never understand the pain you've caused me You spin my head around Kick me when I'm down I found my feet again, now I can't lose I played the fool for you Broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away So you're the fool today You'll never understand the joy it gave me An empty sky A violent sea The magician And I don't need to be afraid The skies are blue The seas are blue Now that I'm away from you Give it up now baby C'mon, c'mon darlin' You'll never understand the pain you've caused me You spin my head around Kick me when I'm down I found my feet again, now I can't lose I played the fool for you Broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away So you're the fool today You'll never understand the joy it gave me The magician showed me the way And he says that here I can stay And I don't need to be afraid Cause you can't unlock the gates And the skies are blue And the seas are blue Now that I'm away from you Give it up now baby C'mon, c'mon darlin' You'll never understand the pain you've caused me You spin my head around Kick me when I'm down I found my feet again, now I can't lose I played the fool for you Broke the rules for you I've taken everything you threw in my direction I had to break away So you're the fool today You'll never understand the joy it gave me
I've listened to this about 18 times today Absolutely great mix ... I have no idea how you can make an remaster without the original recording material, but it sounds perfect. Thank you so much for doing this!
Best time of My life and I had no clue at the time. That's how time works tho right, you never know when your enjoying it the most till it's all over. Here's to the 80's and maybe early 90's.
First time i ever heard Secession was in 1992 and it was the 12" for Promise and i was hooked. What draws me to (and makes their songs great) them was the whole break-up/disappointment theme that encompassed their songs. bittersweet! arrogant catchy and so cool. i looked for the 12 inch's of their singles for awhile, and found 'em fairly cheap hiding in record bins at various stores here in Florida ;-).. gone but NEVER forgotten! and yes, good remaster
sfgooner70 Thank you for the heads up. Found it on Apple Music. Bought the original cassette at Tower Records on Columbus Street in San Francisco. A Dark Enchantment is such a great album top to bottom.
@@erictoniaschwab1009 I bought my CD at the Berkeley Tower Records back in 1989 when I was in the Army stationed at the old Oakland Army Base! I am glad I did because you can't find that CD anywhere now!
I don't understand why this wasn't a bigger hit here in the US. This song is pure prillance!
Dark Enchantment was, and remains to this day, one of my favorite albums of the 80s!
Great album!

I was *convinced* this was by New Order, it is that close - and yes, Bizarre Love Triangle is joined at the hip. Quality stuff!

Such a chill vibe 😎

If the chance were mine
you know I'd go
but all along you made that
easy for me
If I had the chance
to gaze again upon the ocean
tell me
what would I see?
An empty sky
an empty sea
a violent place
for us to be
Give it up now baby
c'mon c'mon darling
you'll never understand
the pain you caused me
You'd spin my head around
kick me when I'm down
I found my feet again
now I can't lose
Now I'm on the street
full of people passing by
and they're all
laughing at me
Then I'm in a room
without a door
and all the walls
are closing in on me
An empty sky
a violent sea
all these things
you are to me
Give it up now baby
c'mon c'mon darling
you'll never understand
the pain you caused me
You'd spin my head around
kick me when I'm down
I found my feet again
now I can't lose
I played the fool for you
broke the rules for you
I've taken everything
you threw in my direction
I had to break away
so you're the fool today
you'll never understand
the joy it gave me
An empty sky
a violent sea
And I don't need to be afraid
the skies are blue
the seas are blue
now that I'm
away from you
Give it up now baby
c'mon c'mon darling
you'll never understand
the pain you caused me
You'd spin my head around
kick me when I'm down
I found my feet again
now I can't lose
I played the fool for you
broke the rules for you
I've taken everything
you threw in my direction
I had to break away
so you're the fool today
you'll never understand
the joy it gave me
Show me the way
and says that
here I can stay
And I don't need
to be afraid
cause you can't
unlock the gates
And the skies are blue
and the seas are blue
now that I'm
away from you
Give it up now baby
c'mon c'mon darling
you'll never understand
the pain you caused me
You'd spin my head around
kick me when I'm down
I found my feet again

I know this comment is 4 yrs old but it hit home.for me. I agree with everything you said.
Whoever disliked this, we can't be friends.
Unfairly forgotten.

such a great song....timeless!!!
Steve Masters used to play this a lot back in the 80’s on the modern rock station The Quake in SF
This is why you are the best DJ ever! Then, in that small little apartment, now, and always! One of my favorites! Love ya T!!!
this song always reminds me of Steve Masters Live 105 mixes circa 1988
Thank you. This song is legendary, the anthem for my youth!
Still a banger.
So good
Outstanding cleanup job. On the large data pipe from work, this sounds better than the CD I have.
support the georgia bush familia hahhhaahaahahahah
Classic
So great .
Thanks for this excellent remaster. Great tune.
Excellent quality!! :-D You rock!!
Sounds great! Thank you. Love this.
AWESOME

Thank you, unfortunately youtube's compression makes it sound a little "lossey," The wav is not.
Congrats!
Thanks for this. How did you remaster it?
First time on live 105, Steve Master Sat nights mix 22:00-01:00. Free Radio has never been that good.

Yessss🎉🎉🎉💜💛
Why tf isn’t this on Spotify 😭😓
it is now. not the 12" mix but the album is on there.

The pecky peck mix, which this is, is incredible. I think I still have the 12 inch single
:)
