What a pity the over done camera work prevents us from clearly seeing and enjoying Mr. Cortes's fine work in this piece which values fancy camera work to simple, clear capture of his artistry. The camera cannot have primacy over the subject it is to capture. This isn't about fancy angles close ups and edits: it's about the dance. So many fine works of dance are ruined by over eager camera folk and directors who apparently do not trust the dance to hold our attention by itself.
Exactly what I came here to comment. I stopped watching after just over half-way. Very frustrating, and started making me anxious by trying to grasp what I could before the camera switched angles. :-(
OK, his performance is spectacular, but I think that somebody had too much fun and got carried away with the editing, so much so that his beautiful choreography is shown almost a half of it. Too many cuts in his performance... there, I said it. Beautiful performance though (loved the singer as well)
WOW TALK ABOUT PASSION THIS GUY HAS IT JUST WONDETFUL TO WATCH AND THIS IS WHY I LOVE THE SPANISH PEOPLE ITS ALL IN THIS DANCE STYLE GRACE ELEGANCE AND LOTS OF PASSION LOVE IT 🌹🌹
I thought that I was being overly fussy until I read these comments and realised that I was not alone in feeling that the director/editor went a bit mad with all the footage at their disposal! What a shame. This dance and Joaquin Cortes are exquisite and need no extra production techniques to up the intensity of the dance. From what was available it was clear that the choreography was in perfect sync with the band. And then it ended so abruptly! Spoilt by the director!
As others have mentioned before, the video editing here is a total disservice to the dance and to the subjet, to the point of being ridiculous. Just film straight up so we can see his whole body (a few angles is fine, I get this is TV), no slow mo, no chosing one area of his body to focus on, no rapid cuts, no need to oversexualise either, the thing is plenty sexy enough, no insulting the intelligence of the audience who clicked (and presumably wants) to see a dance, as opposed to needing overzealous post production to create some kind of an "exciting" (garish) spectacle that hinders our actual view and appreciation of the piece! A few cuts to the musicians is ok. Great singer!! Come on, do you really think you can make one of the most passionate dance forms in existence *more* exciting?? Proof that too much is as bad as not enough, and bad taste can be found everywhere!
That's the problem with film vs. being there - You get the stupid interference from camera work etc., keeping you from seeing what you really want to see, your choice and all you get are flashes (like a trailer) - the same applies to music: you want to see the musicians and all they focus on is the singer - Frustrating
I was coming down into the comments section to say just this. For eons, since Fred Astaire said it every camera person/director has heard repeatedly that the best way to film dancers is primarily from the front with very little editing. Magical editing and camera work are only needed if the dancer is no good. That is MOST CERTAINLY NOT the case here! It really spoils the performance.
R. V. K. - All I can think is that the cameraperson, or more likely the video editor, is not familiar with flamenco, and is trying to 'jazz it up' to keep things interesting. They do not appear to understand that flamenco is about the ebb and flow of, and the ability to control, tension. Breaking up the dance into quickly cut isolated segments totally destroys that audience experience. And yes, it is absolutely sexy. I say to the cameraperson or the editor...do you randomly break up your performance with no consideration to your 'audience' when YOU are...uh...dancing? That's why you have a comments board full of frustrated people yelling at you!
He performed this dance with death with his soul, the bull's strength and the triumph of the matador...reminds me of the deep spirit of dance... thank you for sharing your dignity and art
An absolutely amazing and beautiful performance..beautiful man dancing with great musicians. I love that whole wonderfully show. Great work. Amazing talent s.
Dear filming team, the long arms of Joaquin and his brilliant foot work should never be cut please. To respect his art I invite you to follow up to the end all his best taking pirouettes and turns. We would love to se him all! Compliments for al the musicians .I feel the powerful DUENDE...
The camera works is horrid, it's a pure torture. And such contempt for the audience. They won't let us decide where to look, at the dancer's feet or the musicians hands. Why not just stay still and let us see the entire stage??? As we would've in a theater. The cameraman superimposes himself (I assume it's a he) over everyone, the viewer and the musicians. I couldn't to watch for more than 1/2 of this absolutely magnificent theatre.
@@lunaridge4510 This is a very old video from a quarter century ago. Joaquin was in his 20's here. He is 52 years old now. You can't hold the technology from way back then to the standards or wishes of today. But if you want to see more of his power way back then, just put "Joaquin Cortes and Jennifer Lopez" in the search box.
@@catharineconnor2008 Thank you, Catharine. I do know how to search the youtube. The camera was invented much earlier than 25 yo. It has nothing to do with technology. In fact, the camerawork here is quite fancy, it would've been so much easier to just mount it in front of the stage and sit back. In stead of doing constant closeups form different angles.
I first saw Joaquin Cortes perform years ago in Spain. He was young, but clearly an artist with his own defined style and vision. This TH-cam video reveals that he has clearly become a master, like the Martha Graham of flamenco! Wow!

Thank goodness it's not just me who got ticked off at the appalling cinematography and editing of this masterpiece. Why has this been butchered? Whilst I can appreciate the musicians, I'm left sorely disappointed at not being able to see, being denied the wonderful sight of this dance by this man. His pirouette was completely unshown, his arm span could not be seen to their full glory.
And 95% of the comments don't even realize how they have been flawed by the awful camera work.... People can now understand why the average attention span of the new generation is less than 5 seconds.... 🥵
This music & performance are in my blood & i cant explain how it affects me within! The way the singers, wail is from the Arabs but that is all. It has various influences. Islam is extremely modest, they don't dance. This is highly flamboyant. I heard flamenco is an improvised art from. All the singers, dancers, musicians learn about a number of very specific rhythms, by clapping them first. Before they learn to play instruments. That's how they follow each other. They dance the bull fight. The struggle between life and death is a kind of poetry to them. Its also their particular sombre brand of catholism i feel.
Need more focus on this dancer. He is amazing , responding, to & leading the wonderful musicians and singers ,just wish I could see more light on the Central figure of this Flamenco dancer love the close ups of his feet, hips, hands want to see more.
wonderful piece of music, wonderful singer, wonderful dancer, unfortunately completely exaggerated editing. I could hardly look at it, I felt dizzy. Not because of the beautiful dancer, but because of the rapid cuts. Whoever did this: it is not a thriller, but should offer the chance to enjoy the art and the beauty and grace of dance.

Beautiful art that totally envelops the viewer I can only imagine the amount of serious rehearsing that went into the final performance of such perfect harmony. I also admire all the artists that took part in accompaniment in that they performed as one body, in execution and feeling.
I see the comments about the overbearing camera work and honestly it upset me more at firs, but it captures the energy of everyone on stage, as it isn't just the dancer performing alone. Maybe another video could display his talent alone, but this video did a very nice job of capturing the *entire* performance. Much love ❤
I totally agree. I was watching the whole group and how amazingly are they uniting in a single spirit. It just exploded with the dancer’s performance. Amazing.
Soo artisticly sensual- beautiful on the eyes & simply extraordinary ! I just watched a “Master at his craft”!! Pure Perfection 🤗 Thank You….. Nanny Stick Sister ❤️🤍💙
I really admire the fancy footwork of any dancer, the form, the strength, the skill, but hate hate hate, the fancy footwork the editing does, a quarter of a second, cut, another quarter second, cut again, and again, in time with the music. PEOPLE who edit, we want to see what is happening, not here to admire your editing techniques, we trust you to focus so we, who are not in the audience, can see what is happening at the crucial moment when the feet are flying and the taps are fast. We don't want to see how well the audience is taking it, so no cut aways to happy smiling faces, or the band, we want the dancer, all of him, all of the time.
Dance is a full-body skill. It is the coordination of movement through all body parts. Just like the singer's face enhances and enriches our perceptions and enjoyment of the voice so does the dancer's feet in rhythmic movement as this is. I loved the singing and when the camera gave us views of his face when his solo was the feature in this performance, so should he/she have respected the mover as much.
The most beautiful lines, the cleanest footwork., original composition..wonderfully emotive music...please come back Joaquin Cortes and delight us all again...perhaps dancing with someone who matches your strengths and musicality? xxx 12th Sep 2022. xxxxxxx

It is a show. SO far, That's all I feel. I do not have to see his ab to the real flamenco . I feel like I am watching modern dance. Many people focus on his physical and give him a lot of applause.
Knowing the history behind this dance is sweet. The dancing boils over in my blood. So much is said in a simple hand gesture.🤌🏻. Dancers have my undying respect. I can’t even do the 2- step. lol
The camera focused more on the combined contributions of all the artists. However, the focused performance was dance. That's what this performance was all about. Flamenco dance is a tremendous art form. Many of us don't get the opportunity to experience it except in such footage as shared via cyber media. I truly agree with the former comment. What a shame we couldn't see that magnificent talent in this performance. Please post for us the unedited version from the camera placed on the dancer only. Thanks.

Totally agree. As a camera operator and editor, they did a terrible job. It is jarring and unnecessary.
Completely frustrating to watch.

LE PLUS BEAU DES GITAN AVEC SES FOLIES, SES DOULEURS, SES PASSION, SA SAUVAGERIE, SES AMOURS, SES CHANTS ET SON DESESPOIRS, SES REVES D4UN PEUPLE QUI A QUITE LES INDES ET DEPUIS DES SIECLES EST LE MAL AIME DE L'EUROPE,
SUCH a complete and well-rounded artist, performer and dancer. CAMERA work was narcissistic TOTALLY eclpsing, clouding and DESTROYING this person's intense art and skill.

THE EDITING IS EXASPERATING!!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t even do the 2- step. lol
Thank you long time I didn’t enjoy beautiful 🙏🌹🍀🌹🍀🌹🙏

So beautiful ole.ole.
The fact that he's handsome and mysterious helps too.
So dramatic, so passionate, so intense, so sexy, so beautiful. I love it.

Jorge Donn
The camera focused more on the combined contributions of all the artists. However, the focused performance was dance. That's what this performance was all about. Flamenco dance is a tremendous art form. Many of us don't get the opportunity to experience it except in such footage as shared via cyber media. I truly agree with the former comment. What a shame we couldn't see that magnificent talent in this performance. Please post for us the unedited version from the camera placed on the dancer only. Thanks.
A lesson through the male Spanish energy that takes one to your soul and allows you to flutter just for a moment.
it’s possible. Remarkable.
to see joaquin in performe in new york tickets allways sold out
WOW...He moves like a daemon in trance...a specimen of passionate manhood ! Bravo ! The camera concept could be a subject critics.
