This was a huge hit back in our day. Still one hell of a song. A stupendous song.
I used to love this song as a kid. It was on the jukebox at the local diner. Capone was big in Depression Era Chicago. Check out “The Untouchables.” DeNiro played Capone. Sean Connery won an Oscar. The gang pics are from now. Things haven’t changed much for Chicago. Children are dying there every week.
Innocent babies and small "children are dying there every week" and #blm is NO WHERE TO BE FOUND and SEEN marching against gang violence and DEMAND mayor lightfoot/D.A./police do something about it.

Enjoyed this song when it played on the radio back in the early 70's! Thank you for reacting to this! "The Night Chicago Died" is about a shoot-out between the Chicago Police and gangsters tied to Al Capone. It was inspired by the real-life Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, although that involved Capone's men killing seven of Bugs Moran's gang members and had nothing to do with the police. No confrontation large enough to leave around one hundred police deaths ever happened. Al Capone was arrested in 1932 for income tax evasion.
But they were dressed as Chicago police.
Makes me think that movies Some Like It Hot.

If they choose to take up shelter in your yard or shed ,the police can't do nothing but tell them to leave. If they don't leave ,the cops can't do nothing. It is up to you to get them to leave .

Ah, what a classic! It is definitely among that family of strange hits of the 1970s, but a profound song. I loved this song as a kid when it came out. Chicago is very much alive and is a pretty nice town nowadays, BTW.

Paper Lace is actually a British band. They had a couple of hits over here in the UK. But in the US they are considered to be one hit wonders have one song to get into the US top 40 (this one)

@@Deborahtunes Yes and it was a bigger hit out of the two in the UK, but someone else had a hit with it in the USA, not them. And as far as the USA is concerned the rest of the world doesn't exist. You are right, not a one hit wonder worldwide, but in the USA they are.
Status Quo(40 UK chart hits) is a one hit wonder to Americans, boldly stated as fact, along with David Essex and T-Rex (10 UK top 10s). Its a little irksome.

During the depression it was Capone that started the soup kitchens not the government acts as if they did, Capone was nice if you did not cross him, my great uncle was in Alcatraz with him along with other well knowns
AL Capone had a house (big and fancy) just a few miles away in Brookfield, Wisconsin. I still drive past every now and then and think about it, but I forgot all about this song. This video made it real.
This was and still is a great song, reminds me of my junior high school days. My grandfather knew John Dillinger, he used to hang out in Indianapolis and Plainfield wasn't far from Mooresville. There were alot of hoodlums during that era.

My family has lived in and around Chicago for generations. My gran & gramps were actually in their 20s & 30s around that time. One of Capone's 'associates' tried to recruit my gramps. He knew it was time to go. They packed up their parents and children and moved over the border into Indiana in less than a week's time.

And yes, I did become a subscriber. If you like "story" songs, check out "That's the Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" sung by Vikki Lawrence. Also, if you go back to WWII again, check out Vera Lynn. She was one of the most popular singers in the world. Popular enough to be mentioned years later in a Pink Floyd song. Her songs, "I'll Be Seeing You" and "The White Cliffs of Dover" are still hauntingly beautiful. Keep the good songs coming!

I grew up in Chicago and still go back there to visit friends etc..., and in some areas of Chicago it is still very much like this.
The sad part is, in my teen years, a lot of those gangs they showed in the video were getting a strong foothold in my neighborhood. Had more incidences then I care to remember or talk about.

Chicago is just like every place else. You just have to know where NOT to go. In general it’s a nice city with a lot to see and do. I know, it’s my hometown. If it didn’t get so darned cold, I’d still be there.

I was really little when this came out, but I remember it was still well known when I was in jr high and high school. Every time I hear the part about the door burst open wide and my daddy stepped inside, I get chills and tear up, picturing him embracing his wife, and their son (probably teen) experienced the whole thing. Although the song is loosely based on incidents and not all true, they know how to draw you in and feel the emotion. great reaction.

Just to give you a little historical background - it was prohibition which caused the huge increase in gangs in Chicago. By the mid-1920s there were around 1300 gangs that ran speakeasys, underground bars, and brothels in the city. When Al Capone came along he tried to take over and consolidate the gangs. There were more intergang killings than there were police killings because a lot of the Chicago police were taking bribes from the gangs. It took the efforts of the FBI and IRS to bring him down.
Loved this song as a kid (I was actually alive when this song was released!) my dad brought this 45 home and I played it everyday for years. Can't handle it today it is a bit off base historically but a nice jam!

Al Capone was originally involved in business payouts for protection, illegal cigarette sales running stolen cars/goods between Chicago-Detroit and Chicago-St Louis, which actually became the main reason for the creation of the Illinois State Police. Then came Prohibition Era and he got into illegal alcohol sales and opened "the speak easy lounges" and fought other gangs for control of the illegal liquor sales in Chicago. Some elements of the PD were of course on the take (watch The Untouchables starring Kevin Costner), but most weren't. But there were frequent gun battles between Capones' gang - rival gangs - police. Just so happens my husband is a retired police officer from a Chicago area suburb in the 70's and 80's. Oh my gosh, the worries I bore! I always made sure to give him the Love when he left for work each night.
The song Rikki Don't Lose That Number was sang by a group called Steely Dan.

I love this song! I was born and raised in Chicago, and moved to Texas in 1982. Fast forward to 1985- I was bartending and we had DJ’s nightly. I am a big Bears fan, and they won the Super Bowl! The DJ’s had gotten this song to play when the Bears lost ( which they didn’t) so they didn’t get to play it, but ended up playing it for the hell of it! Still brings a big smile to my face!
One thing interesting about that song, is; How did they come up with those riffs on 5:54 and 6:10 if they were a British Band, Because those riffs are done in the Polish Chicago style Polka

As a Chicagoan I and those I know kinda laugh at the whole "East side of Chicago" thing. The east side is Lake Michigan unless you count the far southeast side at the Indiana border. Saying "South Side" or "West Side" would have fit the meter of the song just as well, but whatever.
State Street " that great street" is the dividing line for East and West addresses. There is a lot on the East Side of Chicago. Just so happens most of it lies on the South Side. Which was very diverse back then. Many neighborhoods there are still very diverse. So the lyrics are accurate.
@@Braedensground No one calls it the East Side. The area east of State Street and south of Madison to the Lake is called the South Side side. Ask anyone who lives the neighborhood where Capone's house is located (7200 block of S. Prairie) and they'll say live on the South Side. For that matter, the corresponding smaller area north of Madison from State St. to the Lake is called the North Side. Yes technically, geographically east of State Street is the East Side, but the term is virtually never used.
I lived on the North side for 12 yrs and I had co workers who always said the lived on the East Side of Chicago. Pullman and Hegwisch. Yes they are South but still East from the residents who lived there.
@@Braedensground Pullman and Hegwisch are on the far South Side, sometimes called the Southeast side, perhaps called the East Side by a few. Capone's neighborhood was the South Side. This is splitting fine hairs with a dull axe. The term "East Side" is rarely used by Chicagoans.

Though Capone was a criminal mastermind, he was also a humanitarian! He donated to many churches and started soup kitchens for the unemployed and homeless.
Unfortunately, Chicago is still a high crime area. I remember growing up listening to this and feeling so sad. Why can't we all live together in peace?
They were still going in the late 80s early 90s they were on the Summer Season circuit. I saw them at Butlin's 92 I think. They still sounded great.
Where I live in Canada, if I drive for about an hour, hour and a half west, to this little backwater cottage town, there is a rundown little shack there that, at one time, was a place where Capone and his buddies hid out for a while to avoiid arrest in the US. Who was going to find him out in the middle of the Ontario wilderness? I've been to the place. It's not inhabitable anymore, but I grew up knowing it was there, and in the capital of Canada, where I live, there is a restaurant to this day called Capone's because... hey... he used to hang out in these parts when he was trying to lay low.
