Muriel Laporte and Daniel Chenevez were a couple (much like their contemporaries the Rita Mitsouko). Generally, Muriel wrote the lyrics and Daniel arranged the music and directed the videos. In 1990 French popular music became a lot darker because of foreboding about coming wars and the beginning of the severe recession of the early 90s. This song was written at the same time as Mylène Farmer's "Désenchantée" and Jean Leloup's "1990". There had just been the Tiananmen massacre in 1989, an Israeli invasion and bombing of Beirut I think around 1988 or 89 (the song mentions Lebanon and Beijing). Although the Soviet Union hadn't collapsed yet, the Berlin wall had fallen and it`s mentioned in the song. The Gulf War was about to begin, and trouble was already brewing in the periphery of the former Soviet block. Apartheid was ending and many apprehended a race-war massacre (which ended up happening in Rwanda 4 years later, not in South Africa). Also their marriage was in trouble. Niagara broke up about a year after this album was released.

Ok Dereck you're really becoming a specialist of french bands of th 80-90 period! I saw in the previous comments that someone suggested Mano Negra. That is INDEED a great choice. They used to sing in french (of course) spanish (a lot) english and some lyrics are even in arab! You DEFINITELY need to check their live performance too! May I suggest another very popular french rock band of the same period: TELEPHONE. (check songs like "Hygiaphone" (their first success) or "Ca c'est vraiment toi" a very catchy tune). In a more heavy style check also TRUST and their song "Antisocial".
    Congrats for your channel!

    Paroles

      Rien n'a changé.

This song is about people seeing disaster as spectators (TV or IRL) : lots emotional first but remaining spectators. These where time where lots of NGO where being created and lots of disaster where shown on TV. What is the impact on people after they say "I have seen"👌 Little .. so little... This is the key of the song, this is part of human nature.

This song is about hardcore images you are submitted to on screens, mostly during newsflashes: "I saw war... I saw blood... like if I was on the battlefield...." It was released by coincidence during the Gulf war, and hence at the time it was censored on any French radio and TV stations.
PS: As suggested by other people, yes you should give a chance to Vanessa Paradis' debut album written by Serge Gainsbourg. My favorite songs are "L'amour en soi", a pure gem!, but also her very underated cover of Walk on the wild side, which closes the album. (After the recording, Gainsbourg said: Paradis is hell!)

I'm a big fan of Niagara, the best french duet ever! "J'ai vu" is a pop rock song which became a classic in France. "Religion" was their biggest success. Thanks to MTV -Niagara was their first French artists to be sponsored by in the 90's- they did a lot of live concerts sold out in Europe. You can watch their last videos "un million d'années" and "le minotaure" before they splitted off in 1993. After, they did a solo career not very successfull but very interesting. In the 2000's Muriel Moreno also did "Dynamo", a great techno house group with songs like "river of no return", "I wish I was a boy" and "bark like a dog" : awesome!

Derek, crosses was fashion in the 80’s (see madonna with like a prayer etc...) we are in the beginning of 90’s that’s normal. And she say ‘et j’ai prié’ ( i pray) that’s the reason why we can see Murielle behind or beside crosses. Kisses from France 🇫🇷 merci pour ces vidéos intéressantes (thank’s for your interesting videos). A French fan of Niagara ( I bought K7 in 90’s 😜)

The song is about seing conflicts all around the world on TV like bein'on the front line and becoming slowly numb about world suffering. She's presenting it like she was part of all those conflicts, and talks about it as a survivor all though she was just a spectator. It is a really dark song, extremely cynique too.

    @Dereck Reacts Hello,
You're right, it's well a harmonica which is played and not an electric guitar.
But it's true that they're two close sounds when the harmonica player's particularly gifted and uses a chromatic piston harmonica.
I remember a band played at "La taverne de Nesle", a café-concert in the "Quartier Latin" (Paris city center district) in the 90s. The band covered very famous French or English hits and the singer was also a harmonica player.
This guy played the harmonica like an electric guitar. It was really very impressive to hear the incredible sounds that such a small instrument with this piston coupled with a microphone can produce.
    Amitiés,

Hi Dereck! Thanks for all! NIAGARA my favorite french group.
You make me smile and laugh when you tried to sing in French with some words like "sang" (blood), "mort" (death) and "Yeah" and too when you didn't expect certain musical passages of the song with Trumpets! LOL ☺
"J'Ai Vu" (I Saw) is a the first single ( released before Summer 90) of "Religion" album released in 1991 and they became famous in Europe especially In Russia with "Religion Tour" attracting 15'000 people to a Moscow Stadium and also played at the Zenith of Paris.
With this song and this album, they approach a more rock style, inspired by formations like Led Zeppelin, and tackle more serious subjects on titles like "J'Ai Vu" which deals with conflicts in the world .( Audio Link : @ ).
I don't understand why this song enters the Top 50 in 46th place from June 30, 1990 and struggles to progress over the weeks before signing a progression of eleven places in the sixth week.
It fails to reach beyond 32nd place in August 1990, which is the single's highest ranking in the Top. He left the Top 50 for two weeks before returning for three weeks, then leaving it again in early October 1990.
It's their BEST ROCK SONG from this album and the most famous title of 90's, everybody knows it. Moreover I believe that the video was broadcast on MTV Europe channel at the time.
You make me smile when you tried to sing in French with some words like "sang" (blood), "mort" (death) and "Yeah" and too when you didn't expect certain musical passages of the song with Trumpets! LOL ☺
THE CROSS IS THE THEME AND SYMBOLISM OF THE ALBUM "RELIGION" IF YOU LOOK AT THE ALBUM COVER ON GOOGLE, MURIEL WEARING A LONG WHITE WIG AND DANIEL STUCK AGAINST A TREE IN THE BACKGROUND.
There is a NON SINGLE in the album called "Chemin De Croix" ( Stations Of The Cross or Path of Cross, i don't know to translate it exactly).
I advise you for the NEX TIME "L'Amour A La Plage" (Love On The Beach) in 1986, their second single after "Tchiki Boum" with cuban and mexican Vibes and composed by Muriel Moreno herself ( words: mambo, rococo and in the Chorus: Aooh TchaTchaTcha, Aooh-Aooh, Yeah éééé Ooooh Yeahééé and the video like a Holiday Movie), "Je Dois M'En Aller" in Fall 1986 with 60's-70's influcences (music and video) and the beautiful "Soleil D'Hiver" in 1988 (the only song of their 2nd album "Quel Enfer!" with SYNTHS! There are too BRASS INSTRUMENTS! You'll like it!!!).
To continue with "Religion" album the BEST is "Pendant Que Les champs Brûlent" (" While The Fields Are Burning") in the same year!!! : beautiful song and more aesthetic video and in the same vein with the video "La Vie Est Peut-Etre Belle" in 1991 (in a New Version) as the last single from this album!
Do you know they directed themselves their videos especially Daniel Chenevez.
    Thanks Dereck! ☺

thank you for giving so much attention to French-language music. Being a teen in the 80's/early 90's there wasn't a LOT of options for young Francophones to listen to...Les Ritas Mitsouko, Niagara, Mitsou, Mylene Farmer were few modern options at the time. You should check out th-cam.com/video/ZASLXe86lns/w-d-xo.html by Lili Fatale they were from Quebec city and moved to Montreal and I remember they had a few "hits" on heavy rotation.
