I read the patent. The basic setup consists of a central transmitter that transmits an 8kHz signal though a wire that's buried in the ground around the parking lot. The wheel picks up the signal when it gets very close to the wire and locks up. There is an anti-shoplifting version of this system too, but it's much more complex. It uses several sensors and 2.4 or 5.8GHz transceivers to receive commands and send responses.
next we should make carts lazy people proof to prevent a lazy ass from leaving there cart in the middle of a barking space instead of 1 walking back and 2 putting it in the cart rack
My grocery store, where I work. SURE can use these. I can tell that everyday, there's more carts missing. Even seen people walking out the parking lot with them full of groceries.
The best thing is when they lock at the DOOR cause you went too fast at self checkout for theft security so they just lock your cart so you can't leave.
That's what happened to me today at my local Kroger's. I stepped a few feet outside of Kroger's store entrance. I was literally in the middle of the street between the store's front entrance and parking lot when it happened. The shopping cart wheels all of a sudden locked. Second time that has happened to me within one week. That's why I was looking up TH-cam videos concerning that matter. Couldn't find any videos regarding Krogers shopping carts wheel locking up while still within the store's premises. Glad I read your comment.
This happened to me. I didn't even make it out of the store. That's not the kicker the kicker is that I blocked the only way in and out for almost 10 mins. An employee was walking out of the store and I said excuse me sir my cart is stuck he shrugged his shoulder and said I work in the pharmacy. The customer behind me in line went to find me help. Finally someone came to my cart and said the carts were not acting right and she did something and the cart started rolling again. It was super embarrassing because not only did my cart lock up in the only entrance/exit but the alarm was going off as well and yet no one came over to investigate. Before everyone was aware everyone was like go if they don't care why should you and I was saying I can't my cart is literally locked in place. Two other customers tried to push it out the way we were moving the carpet. The customer that got me help said she remember it happening to her. I thanked her I had no idea about this feature and don't like it. Shoplifting will happen no matter what you do. We honest people are always paying the consequences. Higher prices, cart locks, and more.
They dont work right. Mine locked up walking out the exit door of kroger at high st and e n broadway ave in columbus ohio. Staff unlocked with a radar type gun, so i could get to my car in the kroger parking lot. This is going to be a disaster!

The racism comments here are weird. Anyways, this isn't a "computer chip" but rather just a magnetically activated device. They dig up and bury a perimeter around the building that activates the device which simply sticks a stop into one of the cart wheels.
that's what it feels like a magnet! you can pick the cart up and move it around bit but I wasn't able to bring it to the cart return. I was simply parked a little further than normal got to the back of my car and it just stopped definitely felt like a magnet
