ASHERUISE A friendship camp? Well no wonder then. Friendship camps are some of the worst possible places to make friends because everything is forced and controlled and nobody ever really gets to build rapport. Instead, you're often paired up with someone random, and if you don't like him, too bad, gotta try to make friends anyway.
+James Garcia I worked for 4 years in a Japanese company ( Makita ). Very nice people. But hard to fathom. It's not because they talk to you that they like you. Nice line btw. Grtz
Love your video as always! Personally I found that twitter was a really good way of making Japanese friends. You can type in casual/speaking japanese and it's pretty easy to find people who share the same interest as you. Of course you have to be a bit more careful about meeting up with people, but I've made some of my best friends here in Japan by just chatting with them on twitter.
Understanding Tatemae and Honne is probably #1 priority. A person talking to you in Tatemae feels like your talking to a wall, We would think that it's a Japanese thing but I can see it being relevant to western countries as well. Uchi and Soto is helpful too.
I was in Japan for two weeks last April and became friends with my host in Kyoto. He's not from there, but I found that Kyoto has the nicest people and atmosphere out of all the cities I visited. I was surprised with the amount of people that are genuinely curious and open to talk, share and help others from different cultures.

I have to say I was a little hesitant trying out the HelloTalk app, I wasn't sure how much it would really help develop my Japanese being essentially a messenger app. But after using it for about a week I have to say I'm addicted. I've met a handful of very helpful native Japanese speakers and they're more than willing to help me with phrases and correct my sentences. It's also rewarding helping them with English in return, I have a few partners that are really motivated to learn a difficult new language. The built in translate and sentence correcting are super useful, and overall the app is really well designed. Thanks for the tip Chris!
lol. Anything's possible. My neighbour in England was a (retired) member of the Tenerife mafia. Let's just say he was quite the salesman. I became his friend whether I wanted to or not. Don't get me wrong I saw his violent side once or twice, and you do realise that even though he's officially done with that kind of stuff, if you mess with him in the wrong kind of way you'll pay for it somehow. But otherwise a kind, generous, mischievous kind of guy. XD ... Who... Definitely never takes no for an answer. (I can't say I'd ever even considered going into a strip club before I met him... But there I was, sitting in the VIP area with him... Why? I have no idea. Just not the kind of guy you argue with usually. You'll lose. I found a good test of friendship in Japan is when you as a foreigner get proficient in Japanese. To the point where your Japanese is better than you Japanese friends' English. At this point you can get insight into who's hanging around with you primarily because you are a foreigner, a good person to maintain your English language ability and kind of use you as a prop to show other Japanese people how international they are. Your true Japanese friends will still stick around, speak Japanese to you and hang around. The ones who are using you for the reasons listed above will disappear.

I know this is an old video, but here’s my possibly rare experience: I’ve lived up to 1.5 year periods in a few countries and Japan was hands down the place where I met the friendliest people. I’m an extremely introverted person who pretty much never takes the initiative to talk to anyone, and I only knew beginner level Japanese, but I was randomly befriended by locals I met in restaurants, markets, even once while right in the middle of a tour in Hiroshima. No alcohol involved in any scenarios. I was basically adopted by two old Japanese ladies as their Swedish grandchild and went on trips with them. It’s been five years since I left Japan and I’m sadly not in touch with any of these people anymore, but it still stuns me to think back on the friendliness and genuine curiosity about other cultures that I experienced there.
Can't believe I didn't come check out your channel before now! It's brilliant. The copyright infringement reference in this video is now even funnier in light of recent events! Keep up the amazing vids. You have a new subscriber :)
Very very difficult to make good, close friends here in japan. You can become friendly with Japanese people but don’t think you’ll become close the way you can with the friends you did in high school or university etc. Chris, I’m sure, I’d friendly with the people he describes but I highly doubt he can confide in them and have them become close. In fact I would call the Japanese word for friend “tomodachi/ともだち/友達) closer in nuance to somewhere between “acquaintance” and “friend. The Japanese word “心友”/shinyu “ which would be translated as “close friend” , would be closer to the English “friend”. You’ll find foreigners here of all kinds and it can be hard to get close because of differences in background and personality and also distance. I’ve become friends with many people here but we can’t get close for those reasons. Japan can be a very lonely place to be a foreigner
No diggity no doubt, two Abroadin Japan videos in a week is like a magic! Infuckingcredible. Oh, excuse my disrespectful dishonorable caucasian profanity. Must be because ♩I was a pencil.♩
Two videos within a week? A NEW RECORD! Although I'm beginning to suspect at this point that that whole video with Natsuki in London was just a hoax. I'm hoping you can still prove me wrong on that. :P
It's very easy to make friends in Japan, in my experience. I agree Japanese people can be afraid to use what English they know, for fear of messing up. Most know more than they say. But, be willing to communicate with them, even through Google Translate and a Japanese keyboard app (have had many long conversations through it, passing phone between ppl), hand motions and theatrics, and what little Japanese you know. Be kind, show interest in their lives, ask them questions. I find people genuinely are curious about foreigners and truly want to communicate with you but are usually too shy to approach you first. The Japanese are a very kind and hospitable people. I only spent 4 months with them this past trip, but I'm looking forward to moving there permanently. Greatest people in the world, imo. I miss them so much.
Bruh, making friends in Japan is not just about language barrier. People with fluent Japanese also have trouble making friends because Japanese society is xenophobic af.
Seriously man, thank you. Finally, a solid place to start my journey into the Japanese language and culture. I just watched your vid, Japanese Fluency in 6 Months. Your brilliance is based in common sense and kick ass sense of humour. I had a Japanese lesson one on one last week for 90 minutes. The teacher sold me two books and then told me to open them and read hiragana and katakana. WTF? This took place in a giant coffee shop with curious people listening to me hem and haw and generally look foolish. I have lived in Okinawa for a few months and I am ready to rock and roll, man. Thanks.
Thank you for your wonderful videos! I enjoyed them so much, I spent a month in Japan traveling across the country. I met so many great people on my travels, thank you again. Keep up the great videos!!
Hi! I got the app you mentioned. It's the best app I have ever seen! After just few messeges we managed to communicate in my native language, english and japanese with ease! I didn't believe it might be so ease to speak with (for example) Japanese person who speak English just like me Japanese - lv 1\20 :p Thanks again!
I'm using HelloTalk for German, though I admit, I've pulled away for the time being due to my low confidence and also the time zones. It's a seven-hour difference between CST in America and the timezone in Germany. But next time I chat, I'm going to try to ask a few things. One of my biggest hangups was the formal and informal speech in German. I'm going to ask everyone I chat with what they prefer since we don't have that distinction in English. I'm also going to ask them to correct me if I'm saying/writing something wrong. Learning a language is where you need to become a "grammar Nazi" (yes, I chuckled that I used that phrase and I'm learning German), so always spell everything out and ensure your sentence structure is correct. You can't help someone learn a language using internet speak. And last...I want to gain the confidence to ask more questions in general. I ask meaningless questions, like the favorites game, (what's your favorite this or that) but those aren't good conversations. I want to be able to not feel so tense when chatting with someone. I love typing at the very least; I should let that show more by being more outgoing with the people I speak with.
I'm probably not gonna be able to make it to Japan in many years, however, just listening to your voice is mesmerizing. So.. That's that.. Anyways, I'll keep 'em advices in my mind for when it's time. Great stuff, lad.
If you are visiting the A-bomb museum, could you tell me what hit you personally the hardest? For me it was the folded cranes. That was the thing that personalised it for me. Not the death toll, not the mangled/melted toys and other stuff, not the drawings of people on fire, it was the cranes.
hey man Michael ney from puerto rico, thanks for all your videos, i enjoy them veary much, i started using hellotalk thanks to you and ive been talking to many people over ther in japan, thanks again and have great week
Your videos are fun mate, even if I have no plans on living in Japan in the near future (very intrigued by the country though). Your Japanese sidekick is a blast as well.
Im using HelloTalk and I added one person and messaged that person and they replied really quickly and we had a interesting conversation about Games such as fallout 4 and Metal Gear solid and My new arranged bed time because of my previous attempt to stay up till 2 am.
Any advice on making japanese friends? I really don't want to get stuck in the "westerner bubble"; i am taking japanese language classes before I move out there as an English teacher!

You’ll find foreigners here of all kinds and it can be hard to get close because of differences in background and personality and also distance. I’ve become friends with many people here but we can’t get close for those reasons.
Japan can be a very lonely place to be a foreigner
That hello talk is actually an amazing app and it’s helped me make loads of friends in Japan and because of translations we can understand each other
No diggity no doubt, two Abroadin Japan videos in a week is like a magic! Infuckingcredible. Oh, excuse my disrespectful dishonorable caucasian profanity. Must be because ♩I was a pencil.♩
No diggity no doubt this is the best comment.
HelloTalk is really great! The community is huge!
Two videos within a week? A NEW RECORD!
Although I'm beginning to suspect at this point that that whole video with Natsuki in London was just a hoax. I'm hoping you can still prove me wrong on that. :P
Excellent video. Also love the dead pan humor.
I love the story about how you met Natsuki, very genuine.
Sorry about the price of Kellogg's
Seriously man, thank you. Finally, a solid place to start my journey into the Japanese language and culture. I just watched your vid, Japanese Fluency in 6 Months. Your brilliance is based in common sense and kick ass sense of humour. I had a Japanese lesson one on one last week for 90 minutes. The teacher sold me two books and then told me to open them and read hiragana and katakana. WTF? This took place in a giant coffee shop with curious people listening to me hem and haw and generally look foolish. I have lived in Okinawa for a few months and I am ready to rock and roll, man. Thanks.
how to make friends everywhere: drink. alcohol specifically. tea works too sometimes.
Thank you for your wonderful videos! I enjoyed them so much, I spent a month in Japan traveling across the country. I met so many great people on my travels, thank you again. Keep up the great videos!!
His fateful meeting with Natsuki is the most rpg thing ever happened in real life
Hi! I got the app you mentioned. It's the best app I have ever seen! After just few messeges we managed to communicate in my native language, english and japanese with ease! I didn't believe it might be so ease to speak with (for example) Japanese person who speak English just like me Japanese - lv 1\20 :p
Thanks again!
So basically you started interacting with Japanese people more after meeting the Japanese equivalent of Good-Guy Greg. XD
Natsuki is awesome and that's awesome how you two met and hit it off as friends
You made it man!. First TH-camr who convinced me of downloading an app
"why do you never smile?"
he is brittish, what did you expect
Ahh yes the bad teeth joke
Lmao the bad teeth. I can relate
It's good to have you back :) I missed your videos!

astroboy3507 Good idea - although the winner is Sapporo! haha
One day Chris !!! Yo from Sydney lol !!!!
Abroad in Japan ....wrong. Asahi is better and crisper and stronger.
Thanks for mentioning hello talk! I really want to learn Japanese and this is the first time I've been able to talk with people who speak the language
What a romantic meeting between you and Natsuki, not drunk (haha) and on a Friday night.
1:27 Nice shirt Natsuki!
Little did he know he'd be enjoying a Natsuki song.

I love how you met your best friend and caught it on video!
I hope Chris will make a whole video the night how he met Natsuki.
Cool story bro
you're way funnier than I thought you would be when I first clicked on the video, I subscribed halfway through :)
Any advice on making japanese friends? I really don't want to get stuck in the "westerner bubble"; i am taking japanese language classes before I move out there as an English teacher!
Looking forward to making friends to help make the move to Japan that much easier, thank you for suggesting the app 🤝.
This is what I fuckin love about Japan: "Where you from?" "Come with me, we're friends now". Amazing!
