Maude was a famous American Broadway stage actress from 1888 until 1918 most noted for first performing the role there of Peter in "Peter Pan".
She was reportedly the inspiration behind the character of Elise McKenna in Richard Matheson's 1975 novel "Bid Time Return" and it's 1980 film adaptation of the beautiful and imaginative love story, "Somewhere in Time", in which the character was played by Jane Seymour. How ironic that this great straight romance was inspired by a, from every indication, lesbian where she is, as is routinely the case, magically 'transformed' into an 'acceptable' man-loving female to fit culture's demand for heterosexual only icons.
I would love a lesbian film maker such as Nicole Conn to do a version of 'SIT' based upon this woman's real life. Now, that would be TRUE ROMANCE!

Maude Adams was truly beautiful. I can easily see how the story for Somewhere In Time captured that beauty. She's hypnotic to look at.
This movie means so much to me. I saw the movie during a time when I was going through a long process of losing my mom. She was so special. She also was a brilliant musician that was left unable to move anything but her eyes trapped inside of herself like a hidden treasure unexpressed to the world.
I also was in Las Vegas during this time where some people were being awful to me and I was walking around lost at night and came through a side street rounding a dark corner that came out right at the Bellagio fountains that started playing this theme song that started right at this moment as the defiantly lit fountains shot triumphantly at the sky. Somehow it made me feel all the specialness and talent within my mom and her strength shining powerfully through. When she passed and my sister tragically soon after, I stood in my sisters house playing this song on my phone as I looked at my sisters walls where she had chosen the paint, the books she'd set out, and out of the window to the view she'd so carefully chosen when building her house. I just had all sorts of thoughts about them as this music played out. It brings me back to those moments in time when I hear it.

I read what you wrote and cried as I can feel your pain. I am so sorry for your loss. I know losing a Mother is the most horrific loss of all for all daughters.
When that very special Mother Daughter bond is severed through death, we lose part of ourselves and the loss and grief is astounding and very painful.
I too lost everyone I loved and now find myself all alone.
Yes lostindreams3 people can be very cold, uncaring and extremely cruel by being silent, and at those times I believe that is when you really discover who your friends really are.
I also discovered none of my many so called friends cared, or called, and none of them stayed in touch at all.
They remained silent as though the loss of My Mother meant nothing, and I no longer mattered to them.
Their continued silence only grew louder with time.....until I finally accepted something my Mother always said which was "In this life time dear daughter never expect anything from anyone, and take good care of yourself.....because you may find when you are most vulnerable that at that time your friends will intentionally forget you, and will not stay in touch with you".
Those in deep grief need all the love and caring and friendships at that very special time, more so than at any other time......because we are so fragile, and when we lose those who matter the most to us, part of our hearts shatter and our souls remain wounded, and the tsunami of tears still rage from our eyes as we experience emotions so dark and painful at time I know I wished death would claim me so I could see my Mother and my family in Heaven again. So great was my pain then, and now I still grieve.
One consolation is I believe in Jesus Christ and his promise of reunions with our lost loved ones, and everlasting life in his Heavenly Kingdom.
I brought my Mom to live with me in my home. She became paralyzed in a hospital bed with a multitude of disabilities, but she could still talk and sing to me. She became blind one year before she died, but towards the end her eyes would follow my voice.
In her youth she was an accomplished singer and musician. Somehow seeing her locked away in a world where she could no longer walk and could only sing and talk to me, but not move anything else, or see me made me so very sad.
I am sad no more since I know our loved ones who departed no longer suffer the ills of earthly life......but I also know when their suffering ended...... our earthly suffering and missing them would begin.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could go back in time for just a little while...... just to be with them again....to hug them, kiss them, touch them, hear their voice, tell them again how much we love them, and again see the love in their eyes......and this film Somewhere in Time always makes me yearn for all those I loved...... who went a bit ahead.
Someday I pray you, and I, and everyone will reunite with their loved ones in God's everlasting Heavenly life.
A place where no pain, and no suffering exist, and where eternal love and being with God and his Son, and all the Holy Beings & Angels brings us true everlasting life, and everlasting joy, once again with all those we lost, who went ahead.
May God bless and keep you lost in dreams3, and same for anyone who lost a loved one.
I also believe our departed loved ones can still watch over us, and somehow that gives me the strength to go on with my life, and I hope others also feel the same way.

I know you wrote this 4 years ago but I just wanted to tell you that you have a special talent for expressing beauty you have encountered and feelings that you had at the time in a way that you can give another person a mental picture of this. And not only that you also have the talent that you could stand in your sister's house and let her soul speak to you with that of hers which surrounded you. I just had to tell you that. My mom is 80 years old and can't leave her home and I can see that she doesn't remember as she used to and I am terrified of loosing her because we have always been closer than most mother and daughter's and I don't think I can even live if she dies and she feels the same with me. So I very much understood how you were feeling and I hope you have learned to cope with your loss. A very big hug from me to you and the wishes that all the best in life will come your way!!
Just read this today don't know why I came.across it but God works in strange ways..so sorry for your loss many years ago it never gets better just when you start and try to live again someone else dies...nothing but heart break in this life
One of my very few all time favorite movies. I watched it in a theater when it was new. I didn't see even one pair of dry eyes when the lights went on and it received a standing ovation. I bought the movie on a DVD and so far, haven't worn it out.
I saw it in the theater when it came out. I walked out... couldn't believe what I just saw, turned around and saw it again. I saw it 6 times in the one week it was playing. It changed everything. I changed my style from punk to retro. I learned the piano. I got rid of my furniture and redecorated in junktiques. I memorized poetry. I read, I read, I read. I fell in love.
It was an insane period of time for me... so unbelievably great.

John Barry? Isn't this an adaptation of Rachmaninov's Rapsody on a Theme by Paganini? Another adaptation of the same music is in Groundhog Day. What is it with Rachmy and time travel?
Copernico Felinis The main theme is Barry’s. The Rachmaninov piece was a variation by Barry and has always been credited that way. Barry also wrote the equally enchanting theme for Anne of Green Gables.
No...This is opus 89 on a theme from Paganini by Rachmaninoff the conductor was John Barry.

The music from Somewhere In Time, is the most heart tugging, evocative, music I've ever heard. Ever. I get lumps in my chest, tears in my eyes, butterflies in my tummy. I wish there was film of Maude Adams that I could see.
Thank you for sharing this. Back when my Grandmother was a young girl, her father took her to see a play. Afterwards, they went backstage to meet their cousin, which turned out to be Maude Adams. She has always been a sense of pride to the family, though I'm slightly bitter I got zero of the acting gene.

Somewhere in Time is still my all time favorite Movie. But the point is Maude Adams. When I was about 12 or thirteen I went to the Coranado Hotel in San Diego. There were many great old photos and then I saw a picture of Maude Adams. I fell instantly in Love with her. To this day, she is the most beautiful Woman I ever saw. Just something about her and I'm 66 now but have never forgotten.

wow....breath taking.....I stumbled onto the movie while in college...UC Davis....has been my favourite for YEARS....NOW....I see this! I am not gay, but when I see her pictures, I feel like Richard Collier when he slowly turned to see her picture and was initially captivated.

It’s truly incredible the impact the movie Somewhere In Time has on people. Sooo many of us love the film. I’m born and raised Michigan resident and love sports yet that movie resonates with me, too. The portrait of Jane Seymour’s character Elise McKenna is mesmerizing and I can see how Maude Adams had that same effect to be the inspiration for the film. There is something mysterious about this story and how wonderful it would be to go back in time and witness this young woman’s journey.

Nicely done tribute! Yes, she was indeed the inspiration behind Elise McKenna. Author Richard Matheson saw her portrait in Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada, and imagined what it would be like to go back in time to meet her. The result was "Bid Time Return", which later became "Somewhere In Time". In her later years, she was indeed close to Louise, but there is no evidence of a relationship other than friendship, but, of course, due to the time, there wouldn't be (people were much more private then). Richard Matheson speculated that perhaps she was sad and alone because of a failed relationship and wove that theme into his story, with Richard leaving her to return to his time. But whatever the case, I just hope that she loved, and was loved in return. No matter what her orientation, the greatest of these is love.

I have always thought that the Victorian era dresses were the most beautiful and sublimely feminine. Though I was informed that they were most tortuous to wear. Still the grace and detail of that embroidery incorporated into the attire is very romantic. And the way they wore their hair up and under an equally lovely hat is very fetching indeed. How is it possible to be nostalgic for a time you never lived in? None of the
horrid creature comforts of today. When people comported themselves with greater dignity and grace. Wouldn't it be fascinating to go back in time and just observe the people going about their business on a nice spring day in a park and watch the lovely ladies glide by in their brocade and bonnets with a parasol delicately poised over their shoulders? Maude Adams would likely have nothing to do with me owing to her preferences. Still, to gaze upon her poetic countenance would probably render one dumbstruck and red-faced stuttering for a proper salutation. She is/was dream. A sweet poignant heartache that can alas, never be vanquished . Sigh.......

In the movie "The Happy Years" Dean Stockwells character and his friends all individually say "I like Maud Adams". It's such a cute scene and looking at her pictures I can see why the boys all liked her.

I saw the film many years ago upon its big screen release and it is one of my all-time favorite romantic films, acted with great sensitivity and insight by both Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. I don't normally cry at movies, even sad ones, but this one really made my eyes water. I never knew it was based on Maude Adams, whom I had never even heard of. The instant I began watching this video I was struck by her mesmerizing beauty. Oh, to go back in time and watch her live performances. It rather mystifies me she never tried making films. I suspect she would have done quite well.

My partner introduced me to this film when we first started dating. he had the soundtrack playing and it melted my heart as I knew the story. it was a constant reminder of how lucky we were to find each other, and for me now, a cherished memory of that one love you have always dreamed of....and sadly with his passing lost. Purchased music on vinyl of some of the music that played in this movie, cost me a lot, didn't care. Then I decided that I just had to visit the island, the grand hotel and see where it all happened. It was beautiful, biked the island and then purchased a signed lithograph of the round lighthouse. Memories for my lifetime, a movie I've watched 100 times, "is it you?"

Every time I was this video (it is on one of my playlist) I am enchanted by this woman for so many reasons. I find myself hitting pause and starring at her pictures, especially the portraits of her face. I have often wondered what is was like , before the age of film. They knew nothing different than a stage with people watching their every move; no retakes, outtakes , and you better know your lines. The stage was looked at different after the age of film because of how great it was and the talent you had to have to pull it off. It is still the most respected form of acting. Can you imagine a Broadway stage in the late 1800's? It must have been magnificent. The most intriguing thing to me about Maude Adams was her relationship. Although being gay was unimaginable back then, you KNOW people had to be aware of the circumstances. All those years together, and they made us think it was a guy she loved.(LOL) Well, once again, Hollywood is not true life and the life she lead must have be a grand one.

Really enjoying learning about Maude Adams who I just discovered looking at a vintage photograph. Thank you for this nice understated photo montage. She was also an inventor I’m learning and in later life worked with GE in the field of electrical stage lighting and Eastman Co. re color photography. The comments here make me want to watch Somewhere in Time which I vaguely remember but don’t think I saw.

A truly stunning lady, connected to a truly stunning piece of music. It feels like a dream that a woman and this music exist it it so perfectly fitting for them both. I saw the film as teenager at the cinema and could barely speak because of the emotions it stirred. It is so touching and unbearably sad yet irresistible

For some reason I've always been in love with the 19th century -especially the later half. I know it was a difficult century with many social ills but it also gave birth to the Industrial Revolution, Sci-fi literature, Steam Punk and even WW1.
Unlike other films, this movie captured Time travel without the needed mechanization to achieve it...almost like a Simulacra that one can only step out of with a powerful force -- love.

this is the movie that made me fall in love with the jewelry of that year . I still make the jewelry now in keeping with that time but bring it to the present so we can enjoy then and now together. I've been to the Cenacle Retreat House twice and I know they have a Maude Adams' House, but I never went there. Many people may not know this lady, but the donation of that land to the Cenacle Sisters on Long Island had had very far-reaching impacts of good.
