Cruising the fabulous Baywalk at Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines.

  • On arriving in Puerta Princesa the filipino passengers got out in the centre of of town, leaving just us three foreigners with the driver who dropped us directly at our hotels which was a good service although we’d probably paid 10 times what the locals paid for their ride. I was headed near the Baywalk which I’d identified as probably the best area to stay in Puerto Princesa, staying at another Oyo Hotel called Dads Pension which had good online reviews and costing only 940 pesos/$17.
I sat in my room for the afternoon editing a video, There was a router in my bedroom which was handy. At one point I heard voices in the corridor with guests filli using the water dispenser. You’ll never guess who it was? We hadn’t discussed where in Puerta Princesca we’d be staying. The French guys with the one remaining filipina had arrived here yesterday from Port Barton. We’d been trailing each other since El Nido. Talk about small world. Jonne with his girlfriend Lady were in the room next to mine. Philip, without his filipina girlfriend was on the floor below.
So apart from the strange coincidence of the two French guys staying at the same hotels as me in El Nido, Port Barton and Puerta Princesa. In the other room next door to me at Dads Pension lived a guy from the UK. We’d met in the corridor in the evening when he was returning to his room holding a bottle of San Miguel. As we greeted each other I picked up his English accent. Where you from? I asked. England, he said. Yeah, where abouts? Essex, he said. No way. I was born in Ilford, Essex. I said. Witham, he replied. But hadn’t been back to the UK for over 30 years. His name was Bob. He was 74. Had been a Merchant Seamen. Spent 15 years living in Cyprus. And the past 15 years living in Palawan. Nine and a half years at this hotel in the same room, next door to me. I thought 4 and a half months living in the Oyo in Metro Manila was excessive but 9 and a half years living here sounds crazy. I guess he wanted to live somewhere that resembled his time spent working on ships. I thought Bob’s story would make for an interesting interview but he wasn’t keen on being filmed. A lot of expats are like that. You meet lots of colorful characters when your travelling but a number of expats are flying under the radar as if they’re escaping their past. Bob didn’t go anywhere anymore. He used to walk down to the Baywalk each night but doesn’t even do that anymore. The hotel takes good care of him, manage his finances and feed him twice a day. Every evening he drinks 4, never 3 , nor 5 always 4 small bottles of San Miguel. One as a sundowner and 3 more over the course of the evening in his bedroom. Will probably die in the hotel. Which is without doubt a much more attractive option than living out your remaining days in Duma - regretty.

What a small world that we live in.
You mentioned earlier that you were born in Ilford well i was born and grew up just down the road in Walthamstow but i lived in Waltham Abbey prior to coming to Australia 33 years ago in November 1991.

Sure. The world is small. I was disembarking from an airplane yesterday in Cebu. A guy in front of me with his family had strong London accent, so I asked where he was from. Said originally Ealing - where I lived and worked for 15 years. We'd probably been situated in the same pub one night!
You spent much time in Asia?

Because a foreigner is not "a man" in their view. Its more like a lepricon or some strange creature. Thus no jealousy against us/them.

Here in the states, or at least from what I’ve seen here in the Midwest, women with seventh day adventists usually wear long sleeves. And never pants. I didn’t know they were seventh day Adventists until the gentleman mentioned it.

Perla danglers are a really big noisense in PH. They drive all tourists crazy and away.
But what I cant figure out why philippinioes think tourists want to buy those beads. I tried to ask them: give me coconut I will buy, bring me cold beer to the beach I will give you money, bring me fried fish or something to eat i will buy.
The answer was: no coconut sir; perla perla perla sir buy perla. So annoying.

Also she asks what the hell are you doing there and instead of enjoying the comment you act like you are morally outraged then say you are joking...I don't know about you.
