They didn't think "the blacks are gonna destroy our country because they are black!" And the idea of shipping them to Africa was just one of many ideas on the proper thing to do. But they obviously did not do that because almost none of the slaves in the country had ever even been to Africa at the time of emancipation. And at the end of the day Lincoln DID sign the emancipation proclamation and there were no attempts to ship the blacks to Africa, so yeah, we do actually know how he really felt.
