    Some good recommendations here. I'm excited. (It was many of the honorable mentions that I hadn't heard of!) I think if I made an Image list I would add "Royal City" by Lemire. Love the way he makes you fall in love with characters that are initially unlikable. Study of past, regret, moving on. Family dynamics. Trauma. It's painful and beautiful. And apropos of nothing related to Image, have you read "Ballad for Sophie" yet? I think you'll love that one--perfect marriage of story/art...another painful but ultimately beautiful and sweet book.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, Royal City should definitely have been on thaat list of 'titles I'm looking to read', I've heard some very good things about it and I'm a fan of Lemores more low key and personal work.
      And I'm looking for Ballad right now!
      Cheers!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, maybe not 'popular' when compared to his Superman or Justice League stories, I guess, but I was thinking more about books like the Invsibles and the Filth, while I loved his Doom Patrol among many others. Oh I guess I didn't enjoy most of Multiversity either, but I don't think that was meant for readers like me anyway...

    Always love hearing your thoughts on some of your favourite reads. Like you, I have probably 50 or so Image titles in my collection, but due to space restrictions I’ve sold many more and have read closer to 75. When it comes to my favourites, Brandon Graham’s Prophet always comes to mind first. It’s so ambitious, truly alien, and just unlike anything else. I adore Graham’s work and Prophet is the one that just clicks with me the most. Have you read Arclight from him and Marian Churchland? It’s a beautiful one volume fantasy which would be an honourable mention for me.
    I’d heartily second your praise for Saga, Beowulf, Hedra, and Lazarus (I’ve re-read it with each new volume and it’s just fantastic). Man, this is a tough project. Obviously, something from Brubaker & Phillips would make the top 10. Perhaps The Fade Out, Fatale, Reckless, or Pulp (if we’re excluding Criminal as you did). Other amazing books would be Andrew MacLean’s Head Lopper, James Stokoe’s Orc Stain, Little Bird, Black Science, East of West, Deadly Class, Southern Bastards and so many more. There’s a lot of amazing single volume comics that I could easily put on my top 10 too - Nameless, MCMXLLV, Steve Skroce’s Maestros, Simon Roy’s Tiger Lung and Habitat, Mirenda, First Knife, From Under Mountains. So many fantastic series.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you enjoyed the video and even gladder to hear praise for so many books I have not yet read. I completely forgot about Tiger Lung, which I too enjoyed, but the rest go on my list to search out. As always, many thanks - conversations like these and the ones around are the main reason I enjoy running this channel so much!

      @@ftloc super happy that you covered it even though it's technically an El Capitan publication. In my humble opinion, Stray Bullets is the prime example of good storytelling in comics. Image is my personal favourite publisher. Being in my early 30s I like to think that the company evolved as my taste in the comics medium evolved. I remember buying single issues of Spawn, Youngblood (had an excellent video game too), Pitt, The Maxx, Deathblow and Wizard magazines which hyped these books and made me aware of the creators behind them. After a brief hiatus, Image and Vertigo brought me back to the medium and I've not looked back since.
    Loved the video. Have some stray thoughts, questions:
    People hate Saga?! (*Insert "Kaun hai ye log? Kaha se aate hai ye log" meme*)
    Which is the best way to collect the first 40 odd Stray Bullets issues?
    I make this mistake all the time and you fell victim as well hehe.. Velvet isn't by Sean Phillips, it's Steve Epting. I really enjoyed it, Brubaker-Epting make a great team. I'll recommend Brubaker-Michael Lark's Scene of the Crime as well, I think it was inked by Sean Phillips. Typical gritty, crime drama as you'd expect from the crew.
    I completely understand the V1 and drop syndrome, I suffer from it, Bitch Planet, Redlands and many more have been on that list for me. Like you I also didn't enjoy Monstress, just wasn't for me.
    Since I very rarely re-read, as there so much ground I have to cover, I'll list my favourites based on how I felt when I initially read them and feel about them today.
    In no particular order,
    Invincible
    Southern Bastards
    The Goddamned
    Supreme
    Astro City
    Starlight
    Jupiter's Legacy
    The Fade Out
    Saga
    Airboy

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An excellent list! I have been looking for books like Airboy and the Fade Out for literally years now. And i remember I have you to thank for recommending Jupiter's Legacy!
      I'd highly recommend getting the Uber Alles edition of Stray Bullets, there's really nothing that comes close to its storytelling.
      As for Saga, I think everything will have some valid critics, but the more beloved it is by a huge mad of people, the more likely the critics will feel enraged. So hate may be a strong word, but a casual yet pointed dislike could then come across as more vehement, because it is reacting to the worship as much as it is to the work itself.
      In a perhaps poor example, a movie I simply thought was disposable and stale, if it breaks box office records and wins all the best picture of the year awards, will suddenly become representative of all that is wrong with the world to me 😁

    Regarding saga, I think the heavy-handed lgbt/progressive agenda is off-putting for many and renders the book little more than propaganda. The art of Fiona staples is also some of the worst I have ever seen in the comics medium; I can’t even stand to look at it, inexplicable acclaim and awards notwithstanding.
