I'm Mexican. I think the doll is beautiful. It incorporates some traditional mexican elements like the skull make up and the sombrero, but I have to agree the dress is totally inspired by spanish flamenco dresses and not by mexican garments. The name María García might be stereotypical, but we can't deny it's a very common name in spanish speaking countries.

The fact that they were able to put a marigold on the box but went for roses for the dress is so confusing. Also, naming her Maria Garcia is like naming River something along the lines of John Smith, and the purple hair is so out of place in my opinion.

Still I'll pass on it because of the price and I'm not in love with the doll.

  • @LulaRoad

OK, a Mexican called María here, and I have a looot to say too.
    - José Guadalupe posada, The artist behind La catrina created it as a reflection of the Mexicans that tried to dress up as Spanish people after they conquered us, so it makes sense that the dress looks like a flamenco dress. The catrinas aren’t usually dressed up in traditional mexican clothes, that combination is a little bit more recent.
    - About the purple hair: in “Día de muertos” we decorate the altars
with the colors black, orange and purple, the black means death, the orange means life, and the purple means the combination of both of them.
    - If you were born and raised in Mexico, the name Maria Garcia doesn’t seem stereotyped, it actually sounds familiar, and I really like to see a doll with my name.
    - The artwork is giving me “Virgen de Guadalupe” and the lights in the box kinda looks like a Capilla or Nicho, they’re places where we put our religious images.
I really understand how hard it is for the designers to really get the Mexican culture, and the difficulties of putting all the details in just one doll, but don’t worry, they did an excellent job. 🖤💀

I was surprise when I saw the halo and the golden heart, which reminds me of the repretations in art of the "Sagrado Corazón de Jesús" (Jesus's Sacred Heart) or the "Sagrado Corazón de María" (Mary's Sacred Heart).
Now I imagine an old grandma seeing the doll and put it next to statues of saints.
I don't know if was intentional or just for the aesthetics, but it gave the doll a catholic connection with is present in Dia de los Muertos. It's common see altar with images of the saints the disease used to pray to.
And yeah. Maria, any variation or combination with other names is very common. There is a saying "Todos los hombres son José y todas las mujeres son María" ("Every man is a Joseph and every is a Mary")

I am Mexican and this doll is an offense to my traditions because even though the doll itself is beautiful, it does not reflect the culture of the Día de muertos at all. I have seen people from outside Mexico who really believe that this is the culture of the celebration of the "Día de muertos" and it is not. They are getting the wrong idea due to lack of MGA research. Each country has its cultures, its traditions and they defend them, but this doll is by far a mockery of my country.

Here’s my opinion my parents are from Mexico and I’m Mexican American since I’m born here. I do celebrate Dia de Los Muertos with my parents and sibling. Yes she’s gorgeous, yes she has some nice details. But her dress is a dress from Spain, the flamenco dress. If you look up dresses for dia de los muertos/Mexican dresses, the dresses look WAYY different. I also want to point out her name Maria Garcia…it seems stereotyped. It’s like the name Jane Doe (or John Smith) a name that not unique.
Dia de Los Muertos is a colorful tradition about death and remembering family members and for me at least this doesn’t represent my cultural well at all. For 130 it’s way to much for being not correct.
This is my opinion about the controversial doll.
Edit: Yes I know her name is super common many people in my own family have Maria as their name and my mom knows people with last names of Garcia! I do not have a problem with the names just a little upset they MGA couldn’t think of something a bit more creative. I’ve seen other people in this comments and Instagram comments say the same thing about her name too! And again it’s my opinion!
Everyone have a good day or night

@@AzurasLunarEclipse it’s not. The mariachi hat doesn’t make sense. Looks like they just added it bc it’s Mexican. The crown also doesn’t make sense bc why do we have roses instead of cempasúchil which is an important part of day of the dead and yet it’s nowhere to be found on the doll. The only thing that says day of the dead is the face paint and its a very small portion of the whole holiday. The holiday thrives in colors and this doll is pretty sad with just red and purple. Hair could have been traditional wrapped in colorful ribbons and theres various traditional hairstyles to choose from and the dress is dead as well, it’s lacking vibrant colors. Not to mention it’s a Spanish dress. Overall I think this doll is extremely lazy bc it’s really not that hard.

    1) She is certainly a doll that was poorly made to represent a culture/holiday/Celebration. And the design team clearly only took inspiration from the barest of surface information.
    2) Objectively, her price is quite high for what you get. Including the light box, which is, admittedly a nice touch.
    3) The doll herself is quite lovely, and certainly had a lot of work out into the face paint. Which is done nicely. The bone hand molds are cool & I love the hair. (But if there are defects, we have bigger issues)
I'll get her when she's on sale, heavily discounted. I enjoy the doll, but recognize that she's a missed opportunity & an ominous sign for future collector dolls.

I mean, traditionally La Catrina is dressed in form fitting mermaid gowns, kinda like this one... I mean just because it's red doesn't make it a flamenco dress, in fact La Catrina's fashion is inspired by French fashion... The shape of the dress actually looks like a Sevillana dress, and while actual mexican culture is a mix of spanish colonization with indigenous culture, still is very distinctive from Spanish culture.
Throghout the years La Catrina has been adopted as an icon for the Día de Muertos festivity, adapting the traditional costumes and cultural motifs depending on the state, so adding a sombrero de charro on a designer's dress doesn't make it mexican.

As a mexican myself, and being Día de Muertos my favorite festivity, I know about my culture more than what an US company claims to know, considering other US companies, like Mattel, has done more research and including mexican designers or with mexican ascendence.

It's sad because she looks really cool, especially in box with the lights. But the whole inaccuracy just puts me completely off from her. Not to mention the hefty price tag on top of that. I would hate if they made a doll that was supposed to be my culture and they added all these elements from an adjacent culture to it. I love how it was too late to change her after they read the hate online, so they just slapped a marigold on the front to make it all better 😂

I think making the eye sockets of the skull so large to allow for eye makeup and eyebrows ends up looking like an inhuman skull. It’s as if she’s painted on a squirrel or bird skull, and loses all human facial anatomy, so she looks very odd.

Her dress is Spanish not Mexican. This color palette is too dark Día De Los Muertos is about celebrating loved ones who’ve passed, Not to seem sad or dark, Her hat is ok, her face paint is ok, but everything else is a HARD pass, the dress should’ve been bigger more brighter, Roses were the wrong choice of flowers it should’ve been marigolds, marigolds are to signify the ones who passed to cross over spiritually also 130?.. Lily was 80, she came with an extra outfit and shoes, and extra accessories while all Maria has is earrings, purses, and hat. What I’m getting at is I hate Maria.

For example, when you see skelita calaveras from monster high you immediately think of the day of the dead, she is gorgeous. Thank you for your excellent reviews

In my mind she was so hyped but super disappointed in the actual doll
    1. She could have had brown hair and been the first brown color doll seeing as she came with a sombrero and those cool boots they could have gone mariachi and added some orange to compliment
    2. They could have gone full fantasy there are soo many ways to do the face and soo much inspo from actual people and makeup artists compared to the makeup on so many rainbow high dolls that are out now and the ones coming up in the Halloween line we know they can do better
3.the dress so many gorgeous dresses that are native to Mexico and you go with a flamenco dress????? This dress is beautiful but not for the dia de los muertos doll
So many routes this girl could have taken but they mashed it together and we're like good enough

As a MEXICAN... I'm outraged that they wrote "MEJICANO," but at the same time, I'm sad... because this means they didn't research this beautiful tradition. It looks made by a SPANISH person and not a MEXICAN person. So sad.
The dress is a complete mess. The makeup is ok, and the color selected for the hair is HORRIBLE.
Also, the artwork on the box is beautiful, but the colors are a complete mistake. I think this is the worst doll design they made. 😔

I am Hispanic and Tex/Mex. Price is the killer. Specially because of inflation going on too. I think the look is cute. I have seen quince dresses that use charro hat and other details from a charro look into a quinceanera dresses. Roses were i am from are more popular choice to use. I would say it is a more American spin of the dia de los muertos that i could see on a runway. So i can see the conflict as it isn't about Mexican heritage, it is more of a fashion look. But because we don't have face to designer to know for sure who creater of the look is Mexican or Hispanic. There are elements that did have care put into the doll, and i personally have intrest in them, and because i am Tex/Mex i am used to seeing people doing their own takes towards the holiday because the resources where i am are diffrent. I think if they tried again, besides a price adjuster. The doll would need special designers and them to be stated

I really enjoy this channel. The criticism expressed in my post is not directed at this channel or the wonderful human behind it. These are just my personal thoughts. I think the doll is absolutely gorgeous and expensive yes. But I had to purchase her and can't wait to see her in person! Many Latin American countries celebrate "Day of the Dead" as it is not exclusive to Mexico. For example, it has been debated that the holiday may have gained its recent popularity due to a "rebranding" of an earlier Spanish tradition during the 20th century. I understand that this is one of many possible origin stories of the "Day of the Dead" as its history is vast, has many divergencies and spans decades if not hundreds of years. Many "modern" holidays have very ancient roots and have over time been Christianized, sanitized and simplified. Cultural practices have spread amongst the world's peoples for millennia and these practices continue to blend, change and evolve. Humans by nature are social and we like to share our religions, celebrations, cuisines, philosophies, beliefs, etc... with each other. Sharing and adopting in this context is normal and positive. Rainbow High's message is primarily about inclusion and celebrating fashion, regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, etc. The "controversy" about this doll seems to exist only for controversy's sake and is mostly baseless. I would encourage anyone who might think this doll is an example of "Cultural Appropriation" to study what "Cultural Appropriation" really means, the history behind it, and how misusing the term "Cultural Appropriation" only serves to discourage understanding, tolerance and acceptance.

I am Mexican and it really annoys me a little that they will not bother to investigate what is Día de Muertos. For those who say she's "Incorrect" she's really not, as someone who studies history and is Mexican 🇲🇽, "La Catrina" or "La Calavera Catrina" was made by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada in 1910. She was made as Satire to criticize the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz and the upper classes that supported him during the Mexican Revolution. She traditionally wore clothes that were Spanish inspired by the Upper Class and some references indigenous cultures, that rehabilitated her into a Mexican national symbol.

Do I see the problem? Yes. Do I think it is worth so much controversy? No. For example, if the dress were purple and the hair was black there wouldn't be so much of an issue about it. And the controversy is not so much about the "flamenco dress" or the obvious Spanish influence on the doll, because in Mexico there are catrinas with red dresses and headdresses made with roses and they are not a violation of our Mexican traditions. But the main problem was that whoever designed the doll wanted to stray so far from the Barbie Día de Muertos image that they ended up doing something that bordered on the wrong thing. I love the doll, but for that price it could be closer to a traditional catrina and all they needed was a little more research.

She is just all wrong. I’m Mexican and the first thing that I noticed was the dress. It literally looks like a Spanish flamenco dress, which is an entirely different culture! And the symbolic flower for Dia de los Muertos is a marigold, NOT roses. The holiday overall is very colorful and dresses feature tons of detailed (again COLORFUL) embroidered designs.
And on top of all of this, she is not at ALL worth $130! Lily Cheng was $80 and she came with TWO outfits. I bet they’re gonna try to justify it with the lights on the box, but that’s a gimmick literally no one asked for.
Not to mention the NAME, like really? That’s the most stereotypical name they could have possibly chosen. And the bio! I HATE that anytime there’s a “Hispanic” character they always mix in random Spanish words, that’s just not at all how anyone talks.

I am very familiar with Mexican culture as I study it in college currently, and I have to say, this is extremely offensive. It’s like making a 4th of July doll and dressing her in a native American headdress and american flag gown.. and naming her Mary Jo.

Maybe it looks better in person, but making her hair the same color as the background *and* the LEDs though... probably not the best decision cuz it just all blends in. Unless that's the point, then that's pretty clever.
There's a reason a lot of RH dolls are inflating in price real fast on top of getting less stuff. Since most of their stuff are made in China and with the current things going on over there... it's not a surprise anymore.

The ONLY ones qualify to have a serious opinion on this doll is the ones who ACTUALLY celebrate Dia De Los Muertos. Not just any Mexican who wants to chime in and give their opinion without knowing exactly what is being celebrated.
I my self and my family ACTUALLY celebrate Dia De Los Muertos. Is a special day to celebrate your loved ones who have passed away and leave out their favorite food and things for them for when they come visit us at night. We pray and put their pictures up in a beautiful alter made of flowers candles and their favorite foods and things.
I hate it when people want to chime in and say it's racist or they don't agree with whatever yet they aren't Mexican or Mexicans that don't even celebrate the holiday. And yes it is a holiday for those that dont know it's a celebration we celebrate our loved ones.

Something I find so bizarre is that all the promo images show the area around her eyes to be the same colour the rest of her skin, but the boxart and the actual doll have a darker area around the eyes (which obviously looks much better.) She looks so much worse in the promo images because of this. I still won't be getting her either way because the price is insane (and will be worse in the UK if we even get her) and I honestly hate her colour scheme and I'm not a fan of the dress either. She feels like a doll that was meant to be kept in her box, but she doesn't have an accurate and appealing enough design to merit being a display piece in my opinion. Plus I just don't really keep any of my collectables in box but that's just the kind of collector I am. 🤷‍♀️

The doll is pretty, but definitely needs more Marigold elements than roses. I mean her name is Maria Garcia with sounds like Mari-gold, but I'm puerto rican and my girl is Jewel Richie💚💚💚

Another issue I have with the face is that her make up looks like a luchador mask, it’s just awful. I don’t understand why the make up was made to look like a mask.🤔

She gives my Jenny Rivera dress. She always wore this type of dress and it looks lovely. But I see what people mean. The only thing I don’t like about the doll is her hair, and she wore a similar dress. Rip queen.

I do love this doll ...very beautiful....she may not be traditional....but this is a rainbow high doll ....so it's a rainbow high version ....lily cheng was not exactly traditional and yet people adored her🤷‍♀️ ......one thing I will say is her nose isn't correct...it looks unfinished....the whole nose would look better blacked out ....but other then that I like her ....but she will never be available in uk ....and even if she was she would cost uk collectors over £200 ....the price tag is crazy ....Did we really need a light up box????????NOPE....has this significantly upped the price ...YES ....
The doll is beautifully made ..very detailed....but no extra outfit....I prefer lily cheng personally...she was value for money and came with more ....
