Back in the day I had a choice to go to the MTA or Academy Bus in Hoboken. I chose Academy. I am glad I did, being a professional motor coach operator was very rewarding and fun. Driving the animals in New York City is dangerous and stressful. Taking people on trips who respect you is as good as it gets. I retired after 26 years.

Meanwhile in public transit, theres GOOD benefits and for the most part unions everywhere AND consistent everyday work
Edit: and if there's another lockdown or recession or some other disaster... public transit will always win and be in demand as well as considered essential, try that with a coach company 😎

You must be kidding or you weren't qualified to become an MTA Operator. I started with the MTA in 1981, working in Manhattan. In 1997, I began driving for Academy out of Hoboken as a part timer on weekends (Dual Employment authorized by the MTA). Frances Tedesco ripped the drivers off. Extremely low pay and no benefits. No pre-trip or post-trip pay. No overtime pay. Cancelled jobs meant no pay (After waiting for hours). Drivers were short changed so often that they began damaging the equipment. Airport runs meant packing thousands of pounds of luggage into the cargo bay. No holiday pay, no birthday pay (Your birthday is a paid holiday with the MTA). No union meant no one to grieve to. In fact, if Academy found out anyone was discussing "Union" they'd be let go. Extremely long work days for pennies meant that you always hoped for tips! Horrible! And to add to that, Academy governed their buses down to 68 MPH! You couldn't flow with traffic or pass safely on Interstates with 75 MPH speed limits. When away on long winter trips, you couldn't idle the bus for heat. Later, Academy had the gall to install GPS and cameras to keep tabs on the drivers. I quit Academy in the Spring of 2011 and worked massive amounts of over time with transit to pad my pension. Working for Academy Bus was nothing to boast about.

Training a driver with someone constantly saying stuff like, look right, left, front, hazard, look at this, at that, is VERY UNSAFE and STRESSFUL. It depends. If your brother took a road test ONLY in a Tractor-Trailer, then yes, this is correct. If your brother took a road test in BOTH a bus and a tractor-trailer, then this is incorrect, and whoever said this to him should be written up to the Governor's Office, DMV, US DOT, etc. to make sure they get in trouble for this.
