    So what now?
What is little Johnny wants this set up now with Hornbys recent price hikes I suggest you take a seat

Hobbies are expensive. I’m an angler and earlier this year I bought a new 16m pole for £3500. And that’s not even the top of the range. I’ve always thought that whatever you spend on your hobby is money well spent.

wow! back in 2008 my wife bought me the hornby flying scotsman £80 discounted at a cash and carry) set as a bit of fun, it gave me a bit of a bug to build a layout, i got myself the DCC mixed freight set (can't remember what that cost then), then all the extension packs and the station building (pack A) the track sets were between £22 and £35, with the level crossing pack though being the most expensive even then, maybe about £40 ish, all bought from local shops that sadly now no longer exist.

For Christmas in 1973 (There was a postal strike then too) I got the Hornby Flying Scotsman set. It cost £6.99 which, with inflation isn't far off £100 in today's money but that was just for an oval.

    Good point.
Many of us only ever buy second hand for this reason.
And as you say, that market is getting stupid now too.
    £600 is $1200Au.
That's rediculous and not a price many could afford in today's world.
It's becoming a hobby for the rich.

The scary part is that the more people can’t afford to buy new the more the used market goes up so we could be looking at some bleak pricing even more so than now 🥲

Track Packs were introduced, by Triang Railways (Rovex), in 1962 with the introduction of Super 4 track. These were carried over into the Triang Hornby (Rovex) System 6 track and Hornby Railways (still Rovex) Series7 (ROCO) track periods.
Before 1962, there were only two giant shop display layouts that could be purchased and suggested layout plans, with track parts list, in the annual catalogue. These layout suggestions remained the same for Series 2 (1952-1960) and Series 3 (1958-1965) track until 1961.
Series 0 (1950-1951) and Series 1 (1951-1952) track had no points or diamond crossings plus was mono-directional in assembly, so the only layout options were ovals, squares and rhomboids, due to the fact that the power feed was from a special straight track section.
It is possible to build a layout that interconnects Series 0, Series 1, Series 2, series 3, Super 4, System 6 and Series 7, using the relevant converter track pieces.

One of my local retailers is Oakes of Oldbury, West Midlands and they have a deal on Bachmann wagons, buy two and get the cheapest one out of the two for free. I bought two wagons, both £28 and £23 respectively and only paid £28 in total. Good deals are out there you just have to look in the right places leap at the opportunity. I agree with what is being said in this video, getting started in the hobby is impossible without forking out a pretty penny for a basic set and then adding track, building and more rolling stock.

The price for model railways like all things made in China are now ridiculous, like so many other things made abroad. Apart from fluctuations in exchange rates and an unstable world outsourcing supply started as a way for UK manufacturers to make more profit for sure. I didn't see lower manufacturing costs passed on to the consumer. Stuff I bought 15 years ago has tripled in price but my income hasn't. Rip off Britain at it's best. Don't forget the building packs that go with the matt. I've added them together to £239.99!
But let's not just stop there. Nah!! Let's recreate that extremely outdated final promotional image.
Let's pretend your HST set is the Eurostar, so we'll add a steam train pack, a shunter pack, a diesel loco and a steam loco to that; I've gone with the Tornado and three coach pack £241.99, the Diesel [shunter] Freight Train pack £82.49, Railroad Scotrail Class 47 £120.99 and the Stanier Black 5 £249.99, and of course a second controller ... which makes no sense whatsoever ... £19.49.
Bringing our grand total to a whopping £1,334.50 for what you see in the promotional image for the completed track matt - aka, a train set. That's not including all the isolating switches you'd need to actually get those trains to run properly on conventional 12v DC. You'd have to do a load of complicated wiring to stop the trains crashing in to each other!
I wondered how much all of that would cost my parents if little 7 year old me asked for that for Christmas in 1995; £678.54. It's almost doubled!
Problem is 7 year old's these days don't want a train set, they want a PS5, which costs half as much as the train set! So who exactly are Hornby expecting to buy these train sets?

Anyone with any sense should stay away from Hornby - overpriced plastic crap.
They don't care about "model railways" they just want people to squeeze as much expensive track into as tiny a space as possible (usually 6x4ft).
Their buildings are even worse - cheap gaudy clip-together plastic moulded garbage with primary school standard stickers for walls and features. The card kits from Metcalfe are a fraction of the price and infinitely more realistic.
