  • The arrangement of this song started out as a joke in 1983, at Kalisa's Restaurant on Cannery Row, Monterey, California. The Bar Crowd from The Boiler Room etc. would enter the Restaurant after 2 AM (02:00 hours) when the legal sale of Alcohol is suspended until 6 AM (06:00 Hours). Kalisa would take away the Beer & Wine from her tables, and keep her Expresso machine on the boil.
These "Night Owls" would drink Coffee and Tea, and keep talking to each other, rather than going home. On listening to Traditional Folk Music played on Sean's various types of Bagpipes (Scots Pipes, Irish Pipes, Spanish Gaita, French Cornemuse etc.) with the excitement of Ron's wonderful SWASH (Drum) accompaniment, a certain member the Crowd demanded "ROCK AND ROLL" instead. With a sudden inspiration, Sean looked at Ron and said, Let's give them.... this famous song. The change of mood was immediate, the Crowd went "Nuts". Yelling, "Hey ! These Guys Are Great" ! "Hey ! Play That Again" !!! etc. As the prowess of any Musician is really judged on whether or not the Audience can identify the song being played. Finally, after playing this song at Ron's Gigs for another 4 years, they got to Paul Emory's studio in Grass Valley, Ca. and recorded this track in June, 1987. It was released in a small run of " "Lost It In The Surf" Cassette Tapes by Emery's Bennett House Records label.
Ron Wilson: Vocals, Drums ( 2 tracks)
(both his Scottish "SWASH" and his set of "Traps" or "Drum Kit")
    Ryk James: Guitar
    Paul Emery: Bass Guitar
Sean Folsom: Scottish Great Highland Bagpipes
    (2 tracks)
Dedicated to the Memory of these two Musicians:
    Ron Wilson (RIP 1944 - 1989)
This song was written by Richard Berry (RIP 1935-1997)

I'm glad You Found It ! I dare not publish the title of it,
as the BMI / ASCAP police would be on me in an instant
    to take it off Y-Tube.

Any ties to GHS' The Glendora Pipe Band? My daughter was DM while at South Hills.

Ron Wilson graduated from Glendora's Charter Oak High in June 1963 He played Drums in the Marching Band and the Pipe Band. In Dec 1962, he recorded "Surfer Joe" & "Wipe Out" with "The Surfaris" both tracks became top hits in May of 1963. Thank You for asking !

Hello Jim, Yes I still have my Highland Pipes. I started out on a RG Lawrie in August of 1970 and sold it in 1975. In 1971 I bought a new number 1 H.G.Hardie set that I went to Bishop Briggs Glasgow to order (it arrived in Calif. 9 months later). The cost was 61 quid or $130 USD at the time. This Hardie is what I'm playing here. In 1996 I got a 1970s Sinclair & Son for $275 USD with a missing Blowpipe. I got a new Blowpipe, but the mount doesn't match the yellow Catalin. It's one LOUD GHB !!!

Sean, is it true that Ron Wilson was related to the Wilson's of the Beach Boys?

Hi Gitta ! They had the same last name but No, Ron Wilson & Brian Wilson were not related. Both Bands, The Sufaris & The Beach Boys toured Australia together in the Fall of 1963. When they returned to Los Angeles, they found out that the Beatles were the Next Big Hit in Music. Ron told me that He Thought It Was All Over & Gone for Surf Music at that Point. They had "Wipe Out" & "Surfer Joe" being Big Hits in May of 1963, so Ron said that His Band's Apogee only lasted 6 months, May to November 1963.
