playing my first prerelease on friday!
good luck
Have fun!! Enjoy 😄
Im playing my first too on Sunday! This set is definitely worth it, I'm hoping I open rabbits or mice but any of them would be fun
Coming back after 3 and half years! Sat for me!
also playing my first prerelease this friday! i feel like this video helped me a lot with understanding what i need to look for when deckbuilding
I never go into a prerelease without watching this preview! Thanks for putting it out!
Thanks for the video! I've come to rely on these before each pre-release.
You're welcome! I hope it helps you out 😄
Going to my first ever pre-release on Saturday! I'm really excited.
Only been playing Magic for about 7 months now, and only been able to play with my friend only haha.
i’m in the same boat ! only played with my girlfriend and on arena, going to my first in person event with this release. absolutely shitting it but should be fun !
I’ve only played with my family 😄
They are so dang fun. Just hope you pull well. My Modern horizon 3 pulls were rough
I felt that so hard! Although this will be my third prerelease I only have one friend that will play with me😂
My personnel favorite way to play mtg. Dont get me wrong i play standard, draft, and commander as much as possible but there is nothing like the sealed prerelease event. Maybe nostalgia from that being the only thing i could afford to do back in the mirage days? Just a great experience and glad to see new folks going!
I just wanted to say "thank you" for that fast color organization tip, it gave me plenty of time to tweak my deck in the 50 mins to an hour allocated to deckbuilding. Just came back from the pre-release, went 4-0 with a Golgari list with two rares.
Nice, congrats!!!!
Thank god you remembered the gold cards, I was getting really anxious about that 😅
Every time I watch one of these, I think, "That's a good idea. I should open all packs at once to be polite to the guy that collects the wrappers."
One day, I hope I'll remember to do that when I'm actually at the prerelease. It hasn't happened, yet, but here's hoping.
The urge to be a kid in a candy store and start flipping through all the cards first is strong 😂
This morning I bought my ticket to the prerelease and I was thinking 2 things: I hope I get mouse, and I'm exited for Gavin's video today. I can't believe how you got the most mouse-focused pull ever 😂 I'll take it as a good luck omen.
There needs to be an inexplicable sloth creature card in a future unrelated set.
The sword also triggers valiant every turn or more than once per turn if your flooding so i would definitely find a way to fit it in. Especially since the strongest thing we can do is trigger valiant for double strike. Being able to buff a double striker is huge.
it's way too expensive
@pHOxish it's too expensive if things go right. It's perfect if things go wrong and you flood or if your opponent is on heavy removal.
Our deck doesn't have any high impact cards. We are all in on agro synergy, which means there is a very high likelihood we run out of gas if we just can't win early enough.
There's a good argument that you are making for doubling down and just hoping we are fast enough. But the set has a reasonable amount of blockers so it's possible the sword could end up the most important card in the side (and thus should just be mained).
@@coffeedudeable I agree, with the manifold mouse in the deck any weapon is good, even expensive ones.
i watch this video every set and i get freaked out everytime you sort your cards like that lol
You appreciate it when you play at a tiny shop with little room.
@@dragonchr15 fair.
That Dawn's Truce is gonna be the next Everybody Lives until it drops off, and you got the awesome alternate art version. That helps bring up the value for the box even though you're not using it, very nice. It's basically Everybody Lives but not symmetrical if you gift the card.
Everybody Lives stop so many combos in EDH, so I don't really think you can compare it with Dawn's Truce.
@@soffocottifindus True, but Everybody Lives saves your opponents too, which can easily come back to bite you. It's more effective at saving you in exchange for requiring that you save everyone else. You are right though, Everybody Lives isn't that great a comparison. It's much closer to Heroic Intervention in that it's cheap and exclusively protects you and your stuff.
@@boppertron4929 Yeah, it is definitely closer to heroic intervention, with the upside that you have hexproof as well, which could be more relevant in 1v1 scenarios.
ooh boy, that glare though. still, thanks for the making the video. i think it's super useful for others to make a draft video like this!
Loved the video! Hopefully you can keep making these for all sets, or even a second one for bloomburrow. I’m excited for this sets prerelease !
This and the pre-prerelease are my go to prerelease prep
If you still want the excitement of seeing the rare and what you get in each individual pack, but also want to get all your trash early, here’s what I usually do:
Open a Pack, place it face down, do the same for the next pack and put it next to your first pack, repeat for each pack.
Then you have all the packs separated while you still get all the trash out of the way early
Awesome! Tons of great information in here. I'll be going to my first ever prerelease event on Sunday. I just got into MTG a few months ago and I am STOKED.
Thx as always for the video, Gavin!
Sunday morning is my first prerelease because of Bloomburrow. Thanks for this video to let me know what to expect and how to prepare :)
"This one gives you food if creatures you control die, not that strong".
Last brave words in a set that cares about food and or tokens.
I really enjoy these tbh. I started magic as an edh player so sealed was really intimidating. This has been helping a lot to get into it and making the prereleases great
Going to my first pre-release on Saturday. Haven't really played that much sealed so this was a huge help how to manage deck building!
The green white rabbit deck in this pool was looking pretty good.
But I understand the excitement for mice. I'm hoping to pull enough to run a mouse deck as well 🤣
I played a pokemon prerelease but this is my first magic prerelease and first time playing magic in person. Super hyped 🫡
i like your choice of red white, but I would have liked to see how red black turned out, there were a lot of lizards and payoffs for that archetype as well.
It would be more work, but I feel that if you want informed decisions as to how a different deck would be built, you would need to have a list of the pool; either as a text list or some other form.
But it is good you remembered the golf cards.
Thanks for the informative video! I managed to go 3-0 at my prerelease for the first time thanks to your demonstration
Thank you so much for the video! This is exactly what I needed!
Well, that was a great pool for GW with a splash for R.
Thanks for the video.
I tend to find 16 lands is enough, but it does depend on what sorta ramp you go with. Good guide.
Thanks for your great advice. I managed to build my deck just in time for my first game. I managed to win all games with black/white bats synergies. 🎉
Sweet!!
I appreciate the videos, very helpful. The light cast on the cards causing flashing glare when you're moving them and attempting to read them is quite annoying. Maybe change the angle of your light next time to help with that.
Saw another couple of prerelease mock constructions and they seemed to have to cut cards as well. This set might just be well designed to this kind of event. Personally I'd just be so tempted to take the sword as a way to trigger valiant and punch through a board that is starting to lock up. But I understand why you feel it's too slow
Thank you!!!
I look forward to your prerelease videos the most since karlov manor.
I started building stronger decks and winning more .
I'm attending bloom prerelease on Sunday and thanks to the wonderful Gavin I am even more stoked 😊
Yeah this is just like real prerelease, start reading the cards very toroughly, see red, think I should play red, and then speedrun green cards, see a signpost with red and go with red white
The organization tips are so huge for an occasional limited player 🙌
Thanks, dude! As a noob who has only played a handful of games, this was very helpful. I did get the Squirreled Away precon 💚🖤💚🖤
The harvest hosts with the 5 drop that makes tokens is so good it even triggers valiant I'd have definitely played that package if it was my pool.
I got very disappointed when you forgot to add the hybrid/golden cards to your deck. The fact that you remembered at the end made me genuinely happy. The small things that matter in life, right? :D
going to my first prerelease draft tomorrow and i'm really nervous being so new to mtg. but this video definitely help alleviate some of those nerves^^ thank you!
I am so excited about this set
For sorting cards by color. What you can also do, is sort for TWO colors. So you start with any two colors, say green and red, every green card you put in the front of the cards you''re holding and every red card goes UNDER the cards you're holding. That way you reduce the amount of rifling through the deck by half. I think that's quicker than pile sorting where you often have these short mental lapses of where to put a card. It's just "green front, red back, everything else ignore".
love you Gavin. but everyone telling you your sorting method is slower is right. you do realize that you ended up basically shuffling so many times through the same cards. way easier to have 6-8 piles. (5 colors. multi, lands, artifacts) and just sort as you go. i always have my stacks setup in the same order (ie black white blue red green, top row multi, artifact, lands and stuff). its so hard wired into my brain that i can sort without looking at the piles at all. one look through. all sorted
Thanks for the courtesy tip! I'm Canadian so I'm excited to make some judges lives easier!
So excited for this set! Gonna be my first prerelease too!
When I first saw Wildfire Howl I missed the "instead" in the effect and thought "Finally! A decent Wildfire successor! Red got a good card to destabilize a stabilized board, we can have extension in aggro again!" Then I realized it was just a bad Pyroclasm clone.
Anyway, it looks to be a fun prerelease starting tonight!
the glare on the cards is making me nuts
Content creators need to learn about angle of incidence for reflection control and side lighting.
surprised you didn't play the sword; three mana for a valiant trigger when you flood out seems decent.
I think if your opponent is alive after you've flooded out with this deck, you're probably out of creatures.
I always watch these videos and I always want to watch these decks in action. Anyway we could see you play a game or two with one of these PR decks at some point?
Ok that was a really cool sorting method I've never seen before, might try it out.
PS: can we please get a Skeleton Legend that cares about Skeletons? Gut is super cool but Skeletons have been out behind zombies for too dang long. Thank you have a nice day 💀 ❤
Thx for the video, in real Prelease I would also build green white and compare it. But I can understand why you did not do it.
I think the rabbit build could’ve been cool cause you had a lot of the gold cards.
Sorting once by separating each color type is faster than sorting X times where X is your number of colors
Sorting into color piles as you go would surely be faster as your method involved multiple pass throughs of the cards?
Since he's filming this the extra pass through could be necessary just to show it to us
do people typically sleeve their prerelease decks ?
I do, it is just easier to shuffle. And you can bring some nice sleeves or buy from your local game store.
These two videos have been super helpful. I’m going to my first sealed event this Saturday and it’s two headed giant. And specific advice for that format?
Sorry to be so off topic but would you know if we will ever get a red and a blue and a colorless card for the devoted druid cycle. Cinderhaze wretch, devoted druid, and barrenton medic have always been some of my pet cards. Where's the rest of the family and what might they do if they ever did exist? Thank you for your content and all you bring to the game itself. I appreciate you entertaining my comment even being so far off topic.
Surprised you didn't try splashing Black. Looked like it could have speed it up with the the opponent losing life trigers
We need a good Wolf Tribal Commander deck. Nothing with Werewolf or two sided cards 🥺
That glare 😅
Is roughshod duo being a mouse with manifold mouse in the deck not enough to warrant the inclusion? Not likely enough for them to line up?
I am fairly new to magic, but why didn't you include the artifact Fountainport Bell to get a landdraw and then draw a card the next turn?
I think I'll get the frog deck
I check every pack for rares because new cappenna had packs missing rares.
Do you have a way to get the rares that you were missing?
Do you ever plan a sideboard? This will be my second prerelease event as a new MTG player and was wondering if I’d need to adapt/adjust between matches.
Wait, what Scavanger’s Talent don’t do a lot?! In a forage payoff or life gain it’s a bomb imo, weaker when you play it later, like turn four-five but then you can level it fast
Gracias
Honestly would have gone bunnies with that stack of uncommons in WG
Mtg needs a Mortal Kombat series, similar to assassin's creed. 🙏 please!
Nice.
Would you build the deck the same way if you played it in 2HG?
I'm curious in general how viable aggro is in 2HG because there potentially many more blockers around.
In 2HG the "each opponent" cards shoot up a lot in value.
@@bondeulv Yes that makes perfect sense. I'm mostly curious aggro in 2HG.
Thanks, please sort the lighting out for the next one! Too much glare to see the cards.
Equipment can be cool I guess for a repetable Valiant trigger
Day 18 of asking Gavin to make a card with fateseal.
Oh man, that would be cool to have a new legendary creature that has something like "Whenever you cast a spell during an opponent's turn, you may Fateseal X, where X is that spell's mana vaule. "
@@andrewfornes5320 the hard thing about making a fatesteal card is you can’t make it too much like lantern combo.
@@stormcountmtg4183 True.
I say that whilst owning a Circu, Dimir Lobotomist edh deck, that has Lantern of Insight, Field of Dreams, Telepathy, Codex Shredder, Pyxis of Pandemonium... all in the 99. It is probably the closest thing I could create to be like Lantern Control in EDH, haha.
@@andrewfornes5320 that would be insane hahaha
Hopefully, it will be an Ooze.
I almost always have trouble picking bombs from pretty good cards.
Bring back 15 card packs. Add back a common. Prerelease isn't fun anymore with play boosters
Can we please get some new grixis vehicles support!!
What is the % of plainwalkers in this set showing up in a prerelease kit
I believe there is one planeswalker in the set (Ral), while the Imagine: Critters can only be found in Collector Boosters (and commander decks)?
So I'd say the probability is low to open one in a prerelease kit is fairly low.
Sword triggers valiant too which is pretty cool right?
Where is the play mat from? Dying for some Bloomburrow mats.
i didn’t use this guide and got absolutely obliterated
As a software engineer your sorting algorithm would not pass code review. It was giving me anxiety.
O(5n) > O(n) regardless of the fact that we don't technically count constants. I agree with you. Other than maybe the movements from your hand to the pile adding to the BigO calculations
BubbleSortMTG
what is your opinion on building 5 color good stuff no fixing and a dream ?
StarForged Sword with the brutal draft chaff downsides. Gift to auto equip and lose flying? If this card had granted flying and +3/+3 for 4, it would be a bomb. As it is it's junk. 7 mana without the gift, to cast and equip, for +3/+3 and LOSING flying? One of the worst draft garbage artifact equipment cards printed in 10 years!
I feel like in this set you’re better off sorting by creature type / synergy cards rather than colour
How much lands do people usually play in this format?
Bring back fateful hour
So I tested out your method of sorting cards. It took me a full 1 min and 20 seconds longer. And my thumb was quite sore by the end of it. Don't know how you do it man.
You should race someone doing it the regular way and you sort that way!
So what are things that I do is I put them out the same way but then I put them in also like after I put them in the colors I go through the colors and I put all the ones in zeros and then twos and threes and fours for the lower man cost then I go through it the same way you’re doing it butI put all of the up top and then I know I’ve got six red which is crazy and then I look through and see if I can actually work with that or I can’t but that’s what I do
Lol dreadmaw moose
you should really invest in a diffused light, we couldnt see most of thos cards
I played a couple of prereleases ago (Ixalan) and was struggling to draw lands, given you can technically have a deck greater than 40 cards is it ever worth adding in a couple of extras?
Generally you want a 40 card deck made up of:
14-16 creatures
16-18 lands
6-9 “other” cards (instant, sorc, artifact, ect.)
If you want to optimize further for mana curve:
1-2 one mana cards
7-8 two mana cards
5-6 three mana cards
3-4 four mana cards
2-3 five mana cards
0-1 six mana or greater cards
17 lands
These are just general guidelines to follow if you’re stuck but make sure to build something you enjoy and have fun!
The opening all packs at once makes no difference at the place I play at since we are responsible for throwing away our own trash
How to do prerelease: open packs. realize play boosters are terrible for sealed because they have even less cards and huge variance in rarity, go aggro and give up on any synergies.
Thanks for ruining prerelease WOTC
I didn't know you could include the promo card in your deck :/
It depends on if the card is in the main set. Voja, for example, was only a promo, so it wasn't legal. Cards like that say "Prerelease" after the card number on the bottom.
Can you ban fetch lands and tutors in edh as tutor cheats running almost every game I in every time someone needs an answer they fetch draw and as if by magic they have that one exact niche card they just have randomly in their deck
We hit a milestone! Day 20 of asking Gavin to make a card with fateseal.
You forgot to put the art series cards in your trash pile. Seriously, knock that shit off, and give us 15 PLAYABLE cards per pack.
Gavin, can you please stop opening them all at once 🤣 This is a blasphemy and to think you're not messing with Schrodinger's cat is a bet I would reconsider 😋 Love the channel still though XD
